Looks like a knock-off of a Devlin set, but you can tell the quality of the execution is just not the same.

clips from KSAT 12

Hold up.

They have a police officer do their traffic? Seriously? Why? Must have been very cheap or free to hire a police officer to do it (in uniform no less!).

You think so? The most Devlin vibe I get from it is the weather center with that back light wall. Otherwise it gives off more of an European feel to me.

They've got two cops who rotate traffic duties. They've done it for years. The cops treat it like any other second/side job and are paid by KSAT, not the city. I think it's cheesy, but they are a solid No. 1 so the viewers must like it.

More recently, WFAA in Dallas has started using a cop for traffic updates, as well. Their morning show is typically third so, in their case, my thought is they did it to get some attention. Not working so far.

They have been doing that for decades. Not really a bad deal considering they are paid by KSAT and it brings forth some good will for the PD.

KGTV uses officers from the CHP...at the CHP office (insert studio) in San Diego.

Not really sure what the arrangement on that is...but it

"looks free".

It's not uncommon to have police departments do the weather and traffic. It's actually better for law enforcement to give public service announcements as they have straight to the source connections. KTLA and FOX LA have done it to. Also the NBC/CBS (HNN) affiliate out in Hawai'i do it to.

KTTV/KABC/KVEA/KMEX used to do the CHP traffic reports back in the day as well. Since LA is a hypercompetitive market, they stopped that practice. Now all LA stations have their own talent report on traffic from their respective stations.

This has been going on forever, especially on radio. WGN radio was doing it as early as 1958.

Michael Wright designed KSAT's new set. He also did KPRC and WPLG's new sets as well.
