ColDayNews 438 Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 I've noticed as recently as December, WBNS has begun streaming their entire newscasts, commercials included, with the exception of sports highlights. I've even caught the very first few seconds of Y&R before ending the noon stream, possibly due to an error at the station. Do any other stations do this?
tyrannical bastard 4033 Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 A lot of the Tegna stations do so including WKYC, WXIA, WWL, WBIR and WCNC.

If you watch the end of the streamed newscast on KUSI you can usually see them doing the show teases and other fun production task after the show. Sometimes they even cuss naughty words.

WestleyWolf 122 Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 WNYW still sometimes Gets away with it and show their station live rather than just commercials. but what they do is for example they will have news on or anything FOX shows but then cuts to their Logo with "We'll be right back" underneath it. i also know that all the CBS O&Os show commercials. the only ones i know that still do the dead air thing online is NBC O&Os.

Sometimes they even cuss naughty words. When I still lived in NC, I was watching WUSA's 7p news online one evening to see what the latest was on the snowstorm that was happening. After they went off air, they started recording the 11p teasers, including one on some big investigative report. Turns out all they did to get an answer on something was make one quick phone call LOL
TheRolyPoly 2592 Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 I've seen the beginning of Wendy Williams once from KUSI in their live stream after the end of GMSD at 9am. It was around the 2015 holiday season.
newsbot 271 Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 WFXT in Boston streams commercials during its newscasts; I'm not sure if any other Cox stations do the same. Tegna stations WCSH and WLBZ also stream commercials.
SFTV 532 Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 I feel your pain brother. Lol and Sharon and Rick were discussing what's a good wine to drink when they get home after the show. Another best moment was seeing Christine Devine getting a massage after the show from the floor director

bhratbrat 437 Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 I remember that WRAL does stream their commercials on their stream. WPLG does not stream commercials and apparently, they have a part of the new graphics as part of their web-stream but I dont think they are going to switch over

rkolsen 1686 Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Do you guys know if your watching the real on air commercials or ones inserted dynamically on the feed? I can usually tell when the AD is all crisp and the video is shoddy or vice versa.
tyrannical bastard 4033 Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 COX used to have a separate break feed that went with their streaming, but it appears that they are now simulcasting the broadcast feed, at least with WSB and WSOC. The others, especially Sinclair and Livestream clients, it's painfully obvious that they are inserting spots. I've even seen LOCAL and regional spots (i.e. Publix and Whataburger) when watching streams of stations like WJW online.
tyrannical bastard 4033 Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 My personal favorite was ABC 33/40's show within their breaks when James Spann and the anchors would talk about virtually anything. It's probably a victim of Sinclair's streaming and lives on as a James Spann Facebook live event.
WestleyWolf 122 Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 I know some stations probably still do this but for some reason WPRI/WNAC and WTVR for as long as i can remember and also maybe other stations out there but when they go to break they sometimes don't show commercials at all but instead show an outside cam of the city's skyline or a certain part of the area they use for showing traffic in the mornings. at the same time they would also somehow play the entire news theme of that station (sometimes looping) followed by reporters talking for a brief second then cuts them out.

This goes back to the "old school" way of streaming where the stream was limited to a control room feed. Usually it is left to the control room to blank it out or put up something when Master Control cuts away for their breaks. Nowadays, the newer streaming methods have their own break system whether it's a slate, other source, promo or commercial roll, or spots inserted on the digital level. Doing the latter is a new stream of revenue and exposure for commercial clients and it can even target local advertising to users in a particular area even if they are watching a distant stream.
