Pundits anchoring hard news?

Fox News has had Maj Pete Hegseth of Concerned Veterans for America anchor Fox & Friends First, Kat Timpf anchor America's News HQ... Pete Hegseth also anchored a Fox SR for Fox television stations in 2015.

NBC/MSNBC frequently had Keith Olbermann anchor NBC News Special Reports from MSNBC HQ if BriWi or Lester Holt weren't available. At the time, Olbermann hosted Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann on MSNBC. NBC has also had MSNBC's Chris Matthews anchor the occasional SR from the Hardball studio on the NBC network...

How often do the networks invite pundits to anchor their hard news?

The Fox & Friends hosts have anchored a few Special Reports for Fox affiliates if a major story is occurring in the morning. I don't think it's happened too often, but the most recent I remember them doing that was when the Congress baseball game shooting happened in Virginia.

Also happened w/ the Boston manhunt, Iran nuke deal, and the baseball game shooting in Virginia. Most recent examples I can think of.

most fox affiliates were in local news at the time, so those SRs didn't air in a lot of markets

What about when neutral journalists host opinion shows? Chris Wallace has hosted The O'Reilly Factor and Thomas Roberts hosted The Ed Show while the latter show's namesake was suspended from MSNBC.

That's really playing too close to "the line".

The line between news and opinion should be very clear to everyone. There should never be any question...in fact...they should go out of their way to explain where that line is.

Maddow anchoring NBC Nightly is just as unacceptable as Wallace subbing for O'Reilly...no...no...no.
