Viper550 292 Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 Began tonight. Nothing really noteworthy from Sportsnet or NBCSN off the bat, except that NBCSN has renamed its main primetime game Wednesday Night Hockey rather than Wednesday Night Rivalry, and has allegedly promised more diversity in its games. CBC's Bob Cole is calling a limited schedule of games this year and will be retiring -- it's his 50th season. Unlike other big names like Vin Scully, fans have felt that Cole's kind of been past his sell-by date, quality-wise, and he was mysteriously left out of the playoffs last season.
Journalist 894 Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 Scott Moore, responsible for spearheading Sportsnet's launch into NHL Hockey, has left the company. CBC reports: Moore will leave Sportsnet at the end of the month, according to a statement released Tuesday by the sports broadcaster. He played a key role in helping Rogers secure a 12-year, $5.2-billion deal with the NHL in 2013. Rogers says a search is underway for Moore's successor. In the interim, Rick Brace, president of Rogers Media, will oversee Sportsnet in addition to his current role.
WCAUTVNBC10 415 Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 Is it me or did NBC recycle elements from their TNF look for their Wednesday Night Hockey look? It definitely has that feel.
Georgie56 3333 Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 Is it me or did NBC recycle elements from their TNF look for their Wednesday Night Hockey look? It definitely has that feel. When I saw that, I was expecting the new SNF/NFL graphics to expand to NHL.
Northerner 32 Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 John Bartlett returns to Sportsnet to call their package of regional Leafs games + presumably the additional Leafs games they are allowed to televise nationally (the ones not on HNIC, Hometown Hockey or Wednesday Night Hockey). He was the voice of the Canadiens in English on both Sportsnet and TSN (and TSN 690 locally before TV). TSN is using Bryan Mudryk for those regional Habs telecasts (via a clean feed from RDS).
Georgie56 3333 Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 FOX Sports modified the scorebug. Looks better.
Viper550 292 Posted October 5, 2018 Author Posted October 5, 2018 Yeah, looks better with the old layout. Unsurprisingly, WGN's new graphics look exactly like the baseball version.
24994J 5654 Posted October 5, 2018 Posted October 5, 2018 Unsurprisingly, WGN's new graphics look exactly like the baseball version. All light blue accents in the scoreboard have been appropriately changed to red, but all lower thirds, inserts, and full screen graphics match the baseball broadcasts. The logo in the top right also includes a '21' to honor hall of famer Stan Mikita, matching a patch the team will wear on their uniforms this year. The promo graphic below is also in Hawks colors, but those are specially-colored for all four teams.
Northerner 32 Posted October 7, 2018 Posted October 7, 2018 No major updates to Hockey Night in Canada. They did however use John Bartlett to call the Jets-Stars game. Not sure about the late game - likely Rick Ball (he is the Flames regional announcer). Bob Cole called the Habs and Hughson-Simpson, as usual, did the Leafs game on CBC.
Viper550 292 Posted November 27, 2018 Author Posted November 27, 2018 I guess I'll add NBA in here too since it's the same general time of year. NBA TV appears to have gotten new graphics for their games. They're actually pretty nice (they kinda follow the Turner "let's imitate CBS since we're their March Madness buddies" flat trend with some of their existing typography, but everything's slightly translucent).
Spring Rubber 717 Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 I'm ok with that. Their old graphics were pretty clunky.
24994J 5654 Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 It's nearly 2019. Stop vertically compressing video.
AaronQ 288 Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 It's official: Seattle is gonna be the next expansion team in the NHL. The 32nd NHL franchise will play in the 2021-22 season, and they'll be in the Pacific Division, while the Arizona Coyotes is gonna be in the Central Division.

Now all Seattle needs is a return to the SuperSonics to make the BIG Four complete (plus the Sounders FC).
Viper550 292 Posted December 6, 2018 Author Posted December 6, 2018 Both RSNs in Seattle have experience with the NHL, but Root is potentially tied up under the Mariners' ownership stake.

So guess who'll probably take it? NBCS N.W. Root has Mariners and some Seahawks programming. NBCS N.W. has Portland NBA and could get Seattle NHL (probably has the best chance too if Root does have that Mariners ownership stake).

24994J 5654 Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 It was mentioned earlier in the thread, but here's one of the new elements for NBCSN's Wednesday Night Hockey that draws parallels to their old TNF/current SNF looks.

Recycled AND italicized it. But seriously, I was a fan of the entire NBC/TNF look. That should've been spread across but I digress.
Georgie56 3333 Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 Today in “Not The Onion”: Billy Crystal (yes, that Billy Crystal) is doing color on a Clippers broadcast next month. https://awfulannouncing.com/local-networks/billy-crystal-to-call-a-january-clippers-game-alongside-ralph-lawler.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
Northerner 32 Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 Watching Clippers vs. Lakers on Sportsnet One via NBA TV - taking the Lakers/Spectrum Sportsnet feed (phew). NBA TV is taking the feed directly from the Spectrum - graphics, on-screen ads, everything. Not sure if this is something they're now doing this season for non-Players Only games or not.

Yeah, I've seen them using the NBC Sports Boston feed whenever the Celtics are playing.

AaronQ 288 Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Here's the graphics NBC use for their coverage of the 2019 NHL Winter Classic at Notre Dame Stadium yesterday.
