CLETVFan 367
If Raycom were to sell/trade WOIO/WUAB, who would want it? Only taker I could see is Nexstar but only if Nexstar is willing to give up WKRN and WKRG/WFNA to Raycom in exchange. What about Cox Media? Or could Sinclair expand into a market they have yet to enter? What about the Spectrum Auction too? CLETVFan 367
WOIO did go to the Steelers-Bengals game, but only after the Browns-Bills game ended, and it was toward the end of the game between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. NEOMatrix 1299
What about Cox Media? Or could Sinclair expand into a market they have yet to enter? What about the Spectrum Auction too? No, that's worse. They can't. I doubt WOIO is worth much as a VHF. Breaking News 829
looks like Raycom's getting ready to the cash register. always thought woio had potential, but raycheap always seems to find a way to screw themselves. (even though there have been some bright spots over the years.) it's been troubled ever since they merged with wuab and mistakenly dumped the management team that led wuab's original ten o'clock news into a market leader, even worse after raycom ate more than they can chew with malrite and started cuts. too bad scripps just can't get it's act together again with wews.i remember ted henry saying in his retirement speech that 5 will be one of only two news departments left in cleveland (with the other possibly fox8?) in a couple years time because of its structure. At this rate WEWS has lost what is left of their historic legacy with Scripp's cheapness. The moment that Action News was canned at WOIO/WUAB was the death knell of any competitive spirit at Reserve Square. Raycom was really hands-off when Applegate was there but soon as he retired, WOIO/WUAB was going to suffer being an oblivious Raycom station. If Raycom were to sell/trade WOIO/WUAB, who would want it? Only taker I could see is Nexstar but only if Nexstar is willing to give up WKRN and WKRG/WFNA to Raycom in exchange. It's probably in Raycom's best interests to either sell or trade WOIO/WUAB to someone else. Will they? Who knows. The consolidation news operations in a market like Cleveland is still a few years away. I don't think that either one of these news departments are in immediate trouble to justify such a move. Should the economy go into recession, though... it's anyone's guess. Despite WOIO's woes I don't see Raycom selling 19/43, because a.) it their largest market they owned next (WWSB/Channel 7 Sarasota, FL) b.) it has to be a cash cow despite their languish in 4th place. Credit has to be given to Applegate who came in and shook the market up. Yes, 19 Action News was brash and in your face. However, it did the job, and it challenged the other three stations in the market. Now, one would of wonder how it would of been if CBS would affiliate itself with WUAB 43 instead of 19 at the time; which had a 10pm news? Again, despite the ax swinging at 19 it still puts out a good product, but they're trying hard to moving away from the in your face, brashness that brought them eyeballs. Now they have a clear, crisp newscast. However, they lost credibility with the puppets doing the court case. If you did an autopsy report on the 4 news operation in Cleveland it should be something to an extend of this; WJW-FOX 8- provides the most local news in the market. The morning news dominate, the evening news 3.5hrs. it was once O&O by FOX, and one of CBS' highest affiliates during their tenure as CBS affiliate. Great operation, newscast just needs an updated look with (set/graphics). WKYC- Channel 3- Doesn't compete at Noon or 5pm. Over the last 18 years it product has gotten better with time. The once station that was a third place doormat has overcome a lot of challenges, and there still work in progress. Still pours out a good newscast, but their biggest issue is their parent company. WOIO- Cleveland 19- Ever since 1994 switch from FOX to CBS it has tried to compete with the big three stations in the market. It has made some inroads in the early 2000s, which helped their cause. Still in 4th place in most newscast, somewhat competitive. In 1995, it only had a 6/11pm news. Now 21 years later provides AM, Noon, 4,5,6,11PM (9,10PM news on sister station WUAB 43). It gone from splash & trash to a more conservative newscast. Despite ownership woes it logo is polished unlike the folks on Euclid Ave. WEWS-Channel 5- First in Ohio TV station to go on the air in 1947, and how the mighty has fallen. Once the dominate station in the market. Where it once pre-empt GMA for it own locally produce morning show; The Morning Exchange. No longer carries Wheel/Jeopardy, it newscast ratings have fallen. The station newscast not as strong, and for this to be the flagship station with the company name as your call letters. E.W.S-but how can Channels 3 & 19 news be more attractive than WEWS-TV5? Biggest woes is the parent company, and the company legacy has gone out the window. When your station brand identity looks like it was created by a 7 year old? One would wonder what would Dorothy Fuldheim have to say about this if she was alive? 5 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/16860-out-about/page/204/#findComment-164173 Share on other sites

Jterry 43
Speaking of Raycom cuts: FTVLive is reporting that WMC will not be renewing its contract for its chopper and its use will end after January 1. That will leave the Memphis market without a helicopter, and WMC without a chopper for the first time in nearly 20 years. WHBQ employs a drone, and the report indicates WMC will be working with Raycom to test drone coverage as well. 1 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/16860-out-about/page/204/#findComment-164180 Share on other sites
A3N 1002
So it looks like Raycom is going the Nexstar way with the cuts... And I'd love to see the faces of those who justify cutting the chopper when they try and fly that drone near a crime scene or fire and are ordered to pull back. These are the same morons that will say a drone can do the same job as a regular chopper for only 1/100th of the cost and with no limitations... 3 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/16860-out-about/page/204/#findComment-164182 Share on other sites

Guest Former Member 207
Couldn't WUAB be used as a secondary channel for the games that conflict with the Browns? I do have to wonder if the ratings for the Browns games are a lot lower than last year's or the year the before. The NFL would never allow it...it'll would start to cannibalize into the Sunday Ticket package. Rusty Muck 4374
So basically, WJW is the winner. And I 200% agree. They do everything right. Yup. In this order: WJW, WKYC and then WEWS and WOIO/WUAB waaaaaaaaay in the back... WKYC now leads at 11pm mostly because WJW doesn't have an 11pm newscast (and they haven't since 1994, when they cancelled a truncated 11-minute newscast at 11pm that debuted following the Fox affiliation switch). ThatSowislander 52
These two stations may be a good fixer upper for Meredith, but they have the same problem in Atlanta with WGCL as it has never had the chance to compete there. It could be a good fixer upper for Hearst or Graham also.. add: the signal is also a major cause of the lack of ratings/revenue. raycom should make effects to the switch DTV channels or if not, swap with wuab, but they're cheap and probably will never happen unless the stations were to have a new owner. promoguy98 253
Reminds me a lot of WOAY (ABC Beckley/Bluefield WV)'s logo before the DT switch. The logo looks fairly decent, with its retro 80's vibe to it. Even on a bad logo making day, it's still miles better than WEWS 5 or Cox's FOX25 Boston logo...... Sadly, it pains me to say all that considering it's a "Morris 'The Cat' Communications" station. 3 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/16860-out-about/page/204/#findComment-164324 Share on other sites
