TheRob 937
I wonder how quickly the station knew about it. They didn't cover the actual crash, and made no mention of it in the 6:00 news. The weekday team anchored at 10:00 and dedicated the whole a-block to Barry. They had an obituary pkg and a string of soundbites from various writers, sportscasters, coaches and the mayor. Friday night's aircheck is still in the KFOR queue. He didn't even technically say goodbye for the night. The last thing he did was toss to a golf package, and the show ended on that story. This is how he started his sportscast Friday. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/18066-in-memoriam/page/3/#findComment-129920 Share on other sites
T.L. Hughes 883
I saw part of what ended up being BBJ's last broadcast. They must have run out of time for a proper close to that night's Friday Sports Overtime, and just simply threw the copyright on-screen instead. KFOR and WWLS did exemplary coverage of Barry's passing; I loved hearing the stories that his colleagues, friends and even strangers had to share about him. Growing up watching Bob, Sr. and Bob, Sr., it's jarring that there won't be a Barry covering sports at KFOR. They were pros at what they do, and I was surprised to find out that Bob, Jr. even sometimes ad-libbed entire sportscasts. On one hand, the fact that Bob, Jr. left this earth to join Bob, Sr. the day before Father's Day is in its own weird way, very fitting and a comfort that he was reunited with his dad in time for the holiday, but at the same time, you feel for his wife and four adult children, who won't spend another Father's Day with him again until they pass on. Side note: 26-year-old Gustavo Gutierrez, whom performed the illegal U-turn that resulted in Barry crashing his motorscooter into his car, was booked on complaints of manslaughter, making an illegal U-turn, causing an accident without a driver’s license and possession of a controlled dangerous substance (a white substance found on him at the scene by officers tested positive for cocaine). He's also on immigration hold until his legal status is determined, as he only provided a Mexican ID to officers, preventing him from being set free even if he posts $18,500 bond. Gutierrez was arraigned on the complaints yesterday (June 22) via video link from the Oklahoma County Jail, and drug tests are being done to determine whether he had any cocaine or other substances in his system when the crash happened. http://newsok.com/other-driver-in-accident-that-killed-bob-barry-jr.-makes-first-court-appearance/article/5429195 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/18066-in-memoriam/page/3/#findComment-130054 Share on other sites

Van Miller (1928-2015) http://wivb.com/2015/07/18/legendary-sportscaster-van-miller-dies-at-87/ Obviously, I'm far more familiar with his Buffalo Bills work from NFL Films footage from the early 1990s; and I concur. WIVB's Jacquie Walker had a touching comment about when she and a few others from the station made their last visit. News 4 anchor Jacquie Walker recalls, “He was not able to speak during the visit. You could tell that he really wanted to, but as we were leaving, we were at the door, he raised his hand. We all turned around and looked at him, and Van said one word: And that world was ‘Fandaemonium. That’s the last word I heard Van say, and I think it means he was really thinking of the fans.” Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/18066-in-memoriam/page/3/#findComment-131299 Share on other sites

TexasTVNews 1377
I want to take this time to pay tribute to a Milwaukee news legend. It was 20 years ago this week, Milwaukee Television and WITI-TV6 would never be the same. If you remember Vince Gibbens, he was the most trusted anchor to watch on Milwaukee TV, he was the best. Gibbens anchored at WISN in the mid or late 1970s, then joined WITI in the early 1980s, and then did a 3 1/2 year stint at Baltimore's WBAL-TV, Vince return home to Milwaukee for a second stint at WITI with his co-anchor Joyce Garbaciak pictured with Vince in the early-mid 90s. Sadly, on Nov. 15, 1995; Gibbens died of a heart attack at his home in Milwaukee. Gibbens was 46 years old. Vince Gibbens was a trusted news anchor, a family man with a beloved wife and five children. He took his family seriously, he took his job seriously, and he took his life seriously. I was just a kid growing up here in Big D and I've never heard of Vince Gibbens till I saw some clips of him in his early years in Milwaukee and Baltimore TV, and I remember one time his colleagues and friends calling him Captain Ad-Lib. Gibbens is a legend, a communicator, and a well respected broadcaster. And we at TVNT want to take this time to honor and pay tribute to Vince Gibbens for his years in Milwaukee and Baltimore Television and for his dedication to broadcasting. Thank You Vince, and Godspeed. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/18066-in-memoriam/page/3/#findComment-139838 Share on other sites
