Van Amburg the former KGO anchor and latter grumpy old man has died. Rich Lieberman has the deadly details.... http://richliebermanreport.blogspot.com/2017/06/415-media-news-alert-bay-area-tv-news.html and yes..., He was a fine man...yet grumpy...and had many friends and family members that loved him. Normally I would say "he will be missed"...but in his retired days... he became a Grumpy Gus, and didn't want any contact with anyone or anything TV or circle 7 related.4 points

Question for anyone that's old enough to remember; how long was this set arrangement a thing on WLS? It's the late '80s set with a backdrop that looked like what they used in the '90s. I know these pics (and the clip I got them from) came from a clip from the fall of 1992, which would've been just a couple months before the nearly complete makeover of both set and theme (the red line, serif-font lower thirds had already debuted), but I never knew that the old set received a grandfathered, transitional update. Being so close to the new set, is this possibly a temp set?2 points

It's not in my guide anymore either and ever since TiVo turned to RoVi their guide was slow to update. I think it was on last week but it's Facebook hasn't been updated since June 27. It's a long shot but I tried the message feature on Facebook. However according to WikiPedia it states that Microsoft discontinued the free version of Microsoft Pulse and states it's only available now as a part of Skype for Business during a Skype Meeting Broadcast. So that likely meant the end of the show. I have not seen anything related to a premier date or name for Ari's show. He has been posting control room shots lately during times when the main studio 3A isn't in use (based on the time and as the cameras seen show an empty studio). Maybe they are rehearsing and going over different elements but to be honest I don't know why they can't go over the show in a conference room. Additionally based on the following Tweet it sounds like The Point is over: That and I haven't heard anything on when Thomas Roberts starts anchoring weekend nights or when in July they'll expand live coverage until 9PM eastern or rotas (a word learned from TVForum but never had a chance to use it.)2 points

Never saw the "construction site" on-air. They do seem to be using a lot more tight shots and that bird's eye hand-off from son to father @ the end of the 4pm is gone. I do agree - they need an update. This set is huge considering the market size, but as WFMZ has done in the past - small cosmetic tweaks can surely extend the life of their sets. This time some updated video walls, instead of those rear-projection screens and replacing that horrible faux-wood paneling would go a long way.2 points

Most FOX viewers are in nursing homes where they can't change the channel by themselves. In some cases when you let the old men have the remote...they watch inappropriate shows...like the Man Show and those jiggly game shows on Estrella TV.2 points

I'm personally watching far more MSNBC than I ever did before. Their news presentation is far superior to that of CNN these days. CNN has turned the entire network into exactly the kind of thing that Jon Stewart criticized "Crossfire" for back in 2004; a bunch of people shouting at past each other with no one having anything productive (or often anything intelligent) to say. In contrast, MSNBC these days tends to present the news fairly straight, and when they do have guests, they usually contribute something to the discussion.2 points

Jay Barbree is retiring from NBC news - just short of 60 years covering space for the network. He started with the network in July 1568. He has covered every manned US space mission from Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center. To be honest I thought he retired a long time ago based on the lack of space flight done in the US. In the past few years he's popped up a few times a year usually doing live hits from WESH. I honesty thought he was someone who was on retainer. Maybe this just means he's finally done with TV. However when SpaceX or Virgin Galactic take off in a few years time and he's still around I can't picture him not contributing to their coverage. As an aside note I wonder if the permanent broadcast booths all the networks had and some Orlando affiliates at the Launch Complex 39 Press Site are still standing, leased or owned by the networks or operational.1 point

No, but I did notice the new weather lighting. I thought Ed Hanna looked brighter than usual! Strange that they would have cones and caution tape where it might be visible on air! The studio could use a revamp.1 point

MSNBC is bringing back On Assignment with Richard Engel. Features the same logo as the Dateline version. It looks to be a special series with the first episode on Friday 7 July at 9PM. Ever so often MSNBC gives Richard Engel some airtime for his long form reports.1 point

History made. Peter Mansbridge has finished anchoring his last news telecast with the CBC. His official final broadcast will be tomorrow afternoon during the daytime Canada Day broadcast. "So, that's The National for this Friday night. For CBC News, I'm Peter Mansbridge. Thanks for watching. Thanks for watching all of these years. It's been a quite the ride for me, but always a privilege to be a part of bringing the national story home to you from wherever that story may be. I can only hope you found it worthwhile too. Goodbye, and good night, from Ottawa." Here's another interview of Mansbridge, from CBC's Heather Hiscox.1 point

I think Jake Tapper would be a good hire. I always thought that he should have gotten the "this week" job at ABC. However I do wonder if Taper's tenure at CNN has damaged him somewhat because of his tendency to troll/call out the Trump administration.1 point

She never got good ratings for two reasons: 1) Her time slot was also awkward -- She followed Chuck Todd and the last NBC News branded "straight news" program, and preceded Chris Matthews and all that is him. Her ability to be the merging point for those two just never materialized. 2) You also have to remember, some of the big breaking stories that have happened over the past six months either happened or was dropped by the print media between 4-6pm... and she just doesn't have the chops for breaking news. If you need an example, just remember Comey's firing day -- she had Dershowitz and some other person on, and they just weren't inspiring. I remember watching for maybe 10 minutes before dumping (reluctantly) to CNN. I don't think this could be said enough. Outside of her weakness as a broadcaster, she has never had a good production value or (outside of the politicians) no good guests on any of her shows. Evem at FOX News, where your really don't need a good production team since the viewers are pretty damn loyal, her show seemed lackluster at best. Even in the deep forest that is weekend primetime, I think she would have suffered. She's a lawyer by trade, and she'd probably have been better off as either a legal contributor to Rachel (since they're friends and all) or even as a Legal Analyst alongside Ari Melber, the networks chief legal correspondent (who ironically is taking her slot). It's neither all her fault nor all MSNBC. They both fucked up.1 point

I think a lot of people noticed something was a bit wrong with CNN during the initial craze over the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines plane. Having nonstop "BREAKING NEWS" that leads to constant speculation about what could have happened to the plane (including Don Lemon suggesting something supernatural could have happened or when he read the theory that it could have been sucked into a black hole), Don Lemon essentially playing with a toy airplane at the desk, and the big on-screen countdown to the moment the batteries on the plane's black box went out (they still use this giant on-screen box for other countdowns and promotions, and I hate it, it takes up too much of the screen and looks really bad, and it reminds me of Fox News when they had an on-screen terror alert level, only even THAT wasn't as annoyingly out of place). CNN seems to have decided to go the more sensational route, and that includes the Brady Bunch-esque talking heads screaming over each other over social and political issues, which I personally find unwatchable. If MSNBC goes the more professional route, I'm all for that.1 point
