Byron Allen isn't going to run the day to day operations of a local station group. If he acquires TEGNA, the corporate management team comes with it. This may come as a complete shock and surprise to you all but local stations are about more than news music, sets and graphics... TEGNA has a large corporate staff to help their 60+ stations run their day to day broadcast, digital and sales ad ops.4 points

Let me keep it real: Some of y'all upset WCBS's newscasts was handled by KCBS/KPIX for three days? "Woe is me I didn't see Maurice for a few days, I can't go face the world if Mary ain't on, why does Lonnie have them fancy graphics behind him?" Give me a break! Be lucky you got several newscasts, you could had none at all for a few days! Moving on, don't forget the entire CBS Broadcast operations in New York was affected meaning DC, Boston, LA & SF was handling everything for a few days including Inside Edition, Last Week Tonight, CBS News and if March Madness was still going on, they would've relocated elsewhere.3 points

Gimmicky. Al presented the weather from his kitchen today. Seems like they could easily find someone to fill in.2 points

I doubt NBC would return 2 hours of daytime programming back to its affiliates. My thinking would be... Why not bring back the soaps? I miss seeing the soaps, especially Another World. At least NBC still has Days of our Lives, which got renewed for its 56th season.2 points

Essentially he buys Tegna, shoves his existing stations and properties under it, and lets them do the work while collecting money. That's it. That's his motive. This isn't some grand scheme to shake up Tegna. Same goes for Apollo.2 points

They handled everything pretty well. All in all WCBS was able to do newscasts (even if they originated from California), and give their audience information. They average viewer most definately couldn't tell the difference (and couldn't care less) if they were watching news with anchors from CBS 2 or CBS 5. If there's a silver lining to this, it was cool to see how WCBS improvised given the situation and even more interesting to see O&O anchor talent from elsewhere in the country. It could have been worse and a break from the ususal routine now and then is always intresting to see.2 points

Anyone else find it a little ironic that this thread is called "Out and About," but we're not supposed to be out and about with this whole coronavirus situation? #RandomThoughtTuesday2 points

Looks like Keloland started using First News before they changed to their current logo:2 points

Every other news op in the country is busy with their own stuff going on. And just anchoring outside just throws people out into public areas in an unneeded manner, putting people at risk for absolutely no gain. We're in an uncertain time where the entire 'virtual set' model is showing so many cracks in the social distancing situation it may have been killed, we're seriously going to have to see so many on-air personalities in different shifts to keep everyone sane, and station groups may even have to en masse regional newscasts together. ESPNU literally showed a still screen for three hours because it's too dangerous for the Dan Le Batard Show to air as normal with everyone massed in a studio (everyone called in via Skype and such), and the CBS Morning News went without graphics. As long as information is being presented, that is priority #1 over not seeing your 'news family' in that close around the big desk for the next few weeks.2 points

I say this respectfully. I may have a different opinion than you do but let's get along and not resort to speaking like that...1 point

Nope. Soap operas cost way more than talk shows. They're extremely expensive and need to be a hit out of the gate - with the actors, writers, directors, producers and BTS staff needing to be paid to do this stuff every day in advance of their airings. Meanwhile, a talker host could say corny jokes, interview B-listers and shill women's products for half with interns for staff (hyperbole). Lines up with what I found in newspaper clippings. My guess is that the 9/11/89 changes are when the theme debuted. 1989-1990 is a very interesting TV season for KELO because it was very clearly in the middle of a months-long modernization program. In August 1989, KELO was still "The Big News" with the midcentury "kelo•land tv" lettering, which as far as I can tell debuted in 1964: The first clipping I could find with the new KELO logo was in February 1990, though the title of "The Big News" hung around. This version looks a bit off model, too, with a more "organic" brush stroke. By May, the news title was starting to transition out (and also the logo script looks right): By October—apparently having been instituted for the new TV season—it was "KELO-Land News" at all times. In the Rapid City Journal, the title "Big News" last appeared in listings for KPLO on September 8, 1990, with "KELO-Land News" at 10 beginning Monday, September 9.1 point

That's a given. Of course Allen won't be making day to day decisions for Tegna. But he will likely install more like-minded people as him to run Tegna day-to-day. Whether that includes members of the current Tegna team is not assured. If Allen wanted, he could decide that everyone gets replaced on Day 1. I suspect a hybrid of the two will happen. Some might carry over, but others might be shown the door. One thing is for certain: major changes will be substantially made with the Tegna stations, widely ranging from on air branding to journalistic standards, if or when ownership changes. And when I refer to "C Clarity", that term is inclusive of the social media-style presentation as well. The music is a mere symptom of a much greater problem there.1 point

So now the race to acquire Tegna is now coming down to 3 (4 if you count Standard General) hedge fund companies and a former stand-up comedian (Byron Allen). https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-17/apollo-allen-maintain-pursuit-of-tegna-after-gray-drops-out1 point

Exactly. Especially in morning television you don't have to be #1 to still make an insane amount of cash for the network. It's much cheaper to produce more Today instead of finding a syndicated program and it's a model that Good Morning America is trying to mold around to as well.1 point

The stripped down GMA of this week so far has been quite nice. No studio audience and less focus on pop culture crap.1 point

Not happening anytime soon. NBC is very creative in finding ways to make their 3rd and 4th hours of today and as @MorningNews indicated those 2 hours are pretty popular.1 point

Then at the very least put the forth hour on at the third hours time and get rid of the third hour. Have Hoda just do the third/forth hour and make Craig Melvin a co-anchor.1 point

Thoughts... Source: FTV Live. My personal opinion: I've lost faith with WCBS TV years ago so this is nothing new with them. Situations like this you gotta have ample studio space throughout the tri-state area. Depending only with the 524 West 57th Street is not the best logistical thing to do. However, at this point what's done is done and I hope in the future that WCBS gets their act together and have additional NYC // Long Island studios and not have to depend on work in LA and Boston.1 point

Hell WABC has 3 reporters with 30+ years at the station (Burkett, Dolan, Fleischer), 12 at 20+ (Ritter, Del Giorno, Goldberg, Evans, Bookman, Charlesworth, Torres, Solis, Sager, Yang, Glassberg and Pineda), 13 at 10+ (Einiger, Kenyon, Cho, Baderinwa, Johnson, Novarro (two pieces separated by a stint in CHI, Champion (two stints separated by GMA & TWC), Rosato, Sohn, Yates, Richardson, Smith, Miles). The rest are at 9 or less. WABC doesn't have this attitude or turnover.1 point

I finished the annual rewatch of Today's 9/11/01 coverage yesterday. That Katie and Matt were kept on air from 7 am - 12 pm is a testament to how respected they were as a duo who could juggle the fun parts of the program, but were also absolute pros at breaking news. Tom Brokaw joined them after about 1.5 hours and instead of letting him take over, Katie and Matt remained front and center. Especially when you consider that ABC and CBS cut away from their morning show teams within the first hour and their flagship anchors took over (Peter Jennings, Dan Rather). I've read before that Today was watched by 40 million Americans at the height of the attack coverage, not that that's anything to necessarily brag about. I'm not entirely sure if it's because the duo anchored during the coming of the technology age, but Katie and Matt might be the best team in Today's history. Additionally, YouTube is full of some really great world and national history network news coverage. I encourage everyone to check some of it out. I was in second grade during 9/11/01 and while I remember the day itself, I was too young to remember the context of the news other than the images. Haunting yet fascinating stuff.1 point

you people are all off your rockers... this is not what is on bryon allen's mind... period... end of story... this isn't lifetime movies presents tvnewstalk's collective wet dream... maybe TEGNA is appealing to these people because of the way they do things... mark my words... some day you will wish more owners were like TEGNA... when those other stations are going DARK!!!0 points

So maybe it would be a good idea for WCBS to move out of the CBS Broadcast Center permanently so there is some level of redundancy that CBS News and WCBS can take advantage of?-1 points
