  3. Four. Jill Konopka took a "dream job" (which seems to be outside TV) in Boston though she seems to tweet like she's still a journalist. Perhaps it's a stepping stone of sorts, Boston is one of those markets full of alumni from Albany stations. If this was anyone else on the morning team or any of the remaining veteran anchors, I'd be a bit concerned. There is a huge chasm between "market vets" and "twentysomething kids" on both fronts there.

  5. And sound, too-- a stereo version of the opening title track! In fact, I especially enjoyed seeing the evening edition (LA at 6) openings-- all the other anchors besides Kelly Lange and John Beard not only had their faces shown and names billed just like Kelly and John did, but also had separate smaller title cards beside them for their segments (like in the attached example with sports man Fred Roggin, who had a card to the right of his image [each one alternated] that had the Sports 4LA title and Fred's signature on a dark blue gridded background). To @SoFloTVClassics, thanks for finding these and putting them up-- I had seen evening edition openings aplenty from Channel 4 News/NBC4 News, but never ones from News 4 LA until now!

  8. I recall a side-effect of the implementation of retransmission consent. The stations began running joint ads telling consumers to urge their cable companies to keep their channels on cable. This was at least a decade before Perry Sook starting directly shaking down cable companies for money. For whatever reason, WEWS which was on channel 9, got moved to 11, and WJW moved from 11 to 9. WOIO and WUAB traded spots as well on 6 and 13. Poor shielding was why 3, 5 and 8 were on 2, 11 and 9. 3 was WDLI, 5 was WVIZ, and 8 was WBNX. On the flip side, WOAC was added on channel 12 and several years later, WQHS was added to channel 7 (replacing QVC) and WAOH got a full time slot on channel 15 (after part time carriage on the access channel). These latter moves were part of must-carry, except for WAOH, which was low power. Years later, these were all changed after Time Warner took over the Adelphia systems in Cleveland, and the lineups were more standardized. Spectrum has really made things worse with their packages and poorer service than Time Warner had.

  9. I still remember the days where we had to have a box because our city's build out had "A" and "B" lines which required an A/B switch and made recording from a VCR a guessing game (I went on a vacation hoping I recorded the ALF finale movie on ABC on the A side...only to come home to two hours of Saturday night CNBC on the B side). Despite that, we still had some split channels into the 90s until Charter bought our provider and implemented one-line service, then digital cable. And we didn't even get BET until 2012 locally. And in that time, we've lost channels because our city was classified as a Milwaukee market city, but Green Bay channels are also in our market, so as networks who don't care about decades-long relationships between viewer and stations, we lost the UPN/MyNet, CBS and Fox stations from Green Bay because of network greed. Thankfully streaming for most of them makes catching their news easy (except for Nexstar stations), but it's aggravating to pay so much a month for all this service and your provider doesn't want to deal with blackout hassles just to keep offering a Fox station from out-of-market, lest they lose Fox News next time because of bitterness on Rupert's end.

  10. Not much of a loss from the $10 million Fox was going to buy it for in 2014 when they needed a backstop just in case they couldn't get the terms they wanted from Tribune for KCPQ pre-Nexstar purchase. Fox of course is pretty happy now with not having to run "Fox 24 Seattle" and a WBTS-esque mess of a translator network with a main tower 80 miles from downtown.

  11. It’s not related to the WCCO track. It likely is from the newer stuff, even though it sounds like it’s from 2005...

  14. Someone at KDKA actually got fired for that stunt, if I'm not mistaken (KDKA is a CBS owned-and-operated station, after all). Now in KSHB's case, this more than likely was tongue-in-cheek; I think they did this with the hopes Tom Brady and his people find it funny, and are good sports about it (let's hope).....

  15. Why is TVNT worried about a guy who makes several million and knows exactly what he signed up for with his work schedule?

  16. I believe GMA was at the top of their game at the time Diane was retiring, and they had just lost Sam and were in the process of losing Josh, so it was important to keep some stability on GMA to maintain the momentum. Ultimately I think it was the right decision and I believe George handles breaking news better. I kind of wish George would sub on WNT when David is off sometimes.

  17. I believe it was his consolation prize for not being given the WNT anchor role after Diane Sawyer left. He was heavily rumored to want the position and reluctantly made the move to GMA in 2009 as part of his ascension to the anchor chair. George handles breaking coverage absolutely brilliantly - he’s always calm and commanding, David doesn’t have that ability in my opinion. Further, we’ve all witnessed a bit of a shift at ABC in the mid-late 2010s in which GMA became ABC’s priority. Obviously that’s changed back with the commanding performance of WNT in the last 2 years, so maybe David takes those responsibilities in the next round of contract negotiations. With his broadcast holding ~2M viewer lead of the competition, ABC will give him anything he asks.

  18. Brian Williams has been with NBC since the 90s he has a following and he isn't going anywhere. His 11pm show either wins it time slot or he neck -to neck with Don Lemon. BriWi isn't going anywhere.

  19. Even though he's been part-time since retiring from the NN chair, it's still the end of an era none the less. Maybe he will have a big social media presence like Dan Rather has.

  20. 55 years going from a local anchor in Los Angeles to the White House, Today, NBC Nightly News and even his post-NN roles as substitute host on Meet the Press when Tim Russert passed away to his current special correspondent (effectively an emeritus position); Tom's left some massive marks in the history of television news.
