  2. Not to derail this thread but a lot of broadcast design has trended digital-first in the last few years. Heavy 3D and gradients look horrible on highly compressed video formats and contribute to visual clutter. Had smartphones not taken off I think design trends would have gone in a completely different direction.

  3. It’s all about efficiency these days. Flat renders faster and is scalable across multiple stations in a group. But I agree - I miss the distinctive branding you’d see across stations.

  4. WINK has recently updated their weather graphics. They are using a completely different font than the rest of the station graphics (DIN).. Also their 10-Day forecast might look a little familiar....

  6. Sinclair is starting up another diginet "The Nest" https://tvnewscheck.com/programming/article/sinclair-to-launch-the-nest-broadcast-network/ Basically, Sinclair is trying their hand at "TrueReal" which Scripps/Katz folded earler this year. The channel will replace "Stadium" on the broadcast stations that carry it. I also came to discover, that Sinclair divested most of their stake to Silver Chalice back in May, while still supplying some programming to the network I really think Sinclair's only hope is that someone gets re-elected in 2024. And that all of his supporters will funnel in the "dark money" to keep the lights on and the messages flowing. Other than that, this company is a zombie walking trying to cash in on trends that have little to do with TV.

  7. Thanks for the correction. Remembering how the Thunder move went about, the Sonics name and trademarks remained in Seattle for use by a future expansion franchise; the Clay Bennett-led ownership group also agreed to share the Sonics’ team history between the Thunder and a future Seattle franchise. So, the (original) Hornets not allowing for a similar arrangement with the city of Charlotte before the fact looks like they were less sure that Charlotte would snag a new expansion team (and agree to build a new stadium) down the line.

  8. There’s a lot of wistful, rose-colored-glasses nostalgia in this thread. And perhaps a bit of “get off my lawn” as well. Trying to apply the model of broadcasting from decades ago into today’s world isn’t going to work. The audience has changed. Technology has changed. Yet the broadcasters should operate like it’s 1982? How does that work? The ecosystem is much larger, and people do not—and will not—watch content the way they once did. That’s not a bad thing; it’s the nature of the world. If you try to cling to the old ways, you’re hastening your demise.

  10. THIS! Makes sense as the whole perception even in the 90's and 00's was that in the decades to come was graphics were going to become heavily 3D based, which was of course before the rise of smart phones and people getting their news through forms other then TV, look at the Onion's prediction for 2137!

  11. They also have a new open with a slightly modified logo. Both debuted a month ago. They are getting new graphics, but the whole thing hasn't debuted yet.

  14. She is probably Derick Waller's replacement, as his last day was 10/3. He said it was all his decision, as after 6 years of getting up at 2am, he needed a change. Hope to see him at another station soon, as he is an excellent reporter. Lindsay was great at NY1; good pickup by WABC. Always love her New Year's Eve segments with her dad Gary Tuchman on CNN.

  15. The 7-9am streaming newscast (and presumably the new 10am stream) has moved from the newsroom to the main set and Brad Edwards now has a co-anchor — Audrina Sinclair. It’s also taken on a much lighter tone compared to the hard news format it previously had.

  16. Ehhh... I like that broadcast remains mostly clean. I don't think shows should have to curse or have explicit sex scenes in order to be good. A good drama can stand on its own without those elements. We've all seen how low standards can go when they're relaxed (example the VMAs).
