  1. I'm just gonna put this in the most blunt way possible: I do not expect "the cap" to survive under any political regime for much longer. It is a dinosaur. You can make a convincing case to either "side" as to why it needs to go away. It's been 20 years since Congress last meddled with it, it's just going to take one of the not-Sinclair groups to make a stink about it to the right people. It's a dated method of calculating "reach" in a world where everyone is connected to everything. I've theorized before that this isn't going to start from a company wanting to buy more stations, but a company trying to sell stations and not finding a buyer. Sinclair begging to raise the cap so they can buy more hits a lot differently than, say, Disney saying they can't sell the O&O group because nobody who wants to buy it can because of the cap. The ownership cap on television stations is the least of Biden's worries. I really don't think the general public cares all that much.

  2. Best implementation of the package: WPVI-TV - Philadelphia. Biggest disappointment of the package: KABC-TV moving to the WABC-TV music package. Overall, it's a very nice and clean package. -- Matt

  3. I agree. This package was an upgrade for the visually stunted WABC but a downgrade for KABC & KGO that already had solid appearances. I did like that the ABC O&Os — despite duplicating ABC 7 Eyewitness News in multiple cities —let each station still maintain some uniqueness. As someone said, the average viewer doesn't care... but us niche crowd comes here to harpe about these things lol.

  4. Indeed, the average viewer probably wont even notice the let alone care about the theme music lol. We are the small niche crowd that cares and come to this very forum to critique and "bemoan" (I like this word now ). Honestly, im still shocked and kind grieving the loss of the KABC theme, loved that package so much, but it's a personal problem that i'll have to get over haha. But I agree wholeheartedly with Matt and MediaZone4K. Best implementation WPVI with them retaining their theme and keeping the montage open kudos to theme, their viewers actually care about the theme, WABC which has always been visually impaired with their appearance finally looking top notch and arguably the leader with the upgraded look. Now the next order of business. How will the new sets and studios complement the new look. The sets for all the O&Os are now out of date.

  5. I think any serious discussion of whether Mission has to sell WPIX needs to be put on the back burner of everyone's minds until after the election, and I'm guessing "get past the election" is their legal strategy as well. A shift in partisan control of the FCC or Congress passing a law that loosens or eliminates ownership caps could make this all moot. And even if things remain the same, the backup plan is certainly to extend the appeals process as long as possible in hopes the regulatory environment shifts.

  6. Not even Pax TV got to own all its affiliates. The dream of the CW being all O&Os doesn't sound feasible to me. Again, I point to UPN. After Viacom bought Paramount, they dumped all their NBC and CBS affiliates to make room for more UPN affiliates. If you want to own a network you had better go all-in on it.

  7. The entire McGraw-Hill group sold for $212 million in 2011. I don't understand how prices are determined.

  8. If he's solid in his position as lead co-anchor at their flagship station, I would assume they don't want to mess with his role. And Maurice hosted again tonight!

  9. Things are getting a little off track here... Hearst rarely buys stations, and just blew $220 million on a station in a market where $220 million is a... questionable amount to pay for a TV station. I'm not so sure they'd still be in a buying mood, and I'm also not sure why people see this as the golden opportunity for Hearst to enter the market... This company has had operations in New York City since long before anyone even thought of the concept of television. I feel like they have had numerous better opportunities in much better market conditions to make that happen. In all likelihood, a forced sale of WPIX would probably result in Nexstar dumping some underperforming stations (I'm sure they have a few) to get them back under the cap to own WPIX outright. They've invested far too much in WPIX to let it go elsewhere.

  10. The new opens looks great, but I am very surprised they had Charlie Van Dyke re-do his lines at the open and not just keep reusing his VO like in the previous package (and apparently in Breaking News opens) if they felt the need to continue using him. His voice sounds so badly degraded, which is a damn tragedy. He's a legend, and that voice is so incredibly iconic.

  11. Okay, everyone, I'm sorry for the semi-all-caps rant but if Scripps DOES get WPIX, WHO WOULD EVEN GET THE CW?? WPXN IS NOT AN GOOD CHOICE, I don't even think it has even has a programing schedule for the CW if they have that. Like, I'm actually sick of this udder stupidity of this whole situation about WPIX and stuff. It feels like, if Nexstar shuts down WPIX, then it might be good for y'all at this point because Nexstar isn't controlling it. Please, all I just want is to give me an example on how Nexstar messed UP WDAF-TV, then maybe I'll change my example. Otherwise, please don't respond to me over this comment. Just don't.

  13. Not only will he not get it, he'll stubbornly refuse to sell anything in order to buy it. This is the same clown who runs a company that proudly boasted on their own website they could buy ABC "with little friction". And no one has seemingly considered this is why the FCC has started to crack down on them.

  15. In the event that Kimmel goes I'd like to see ABC keep doing a late night talk show. As much as I like Nightline, it's nowhere near the intelectual program it was under Ted Koppel. Jimmy can be great. His issue is over reliance on Trump for material, especially his virtue signal ladened monolouges. His segments outside of that like Liewitness News, Baby Bachelor and Unnecesary Censorship are hilarious. Otherwise, I find myself turning into Fallon, someone who covers Trump briefly and moves on to other material, keeping his politics at minimum.

  16. Realistically, the network isn't giving up that real estate to NBC and CBS. The benefits, hypothetical at that, of stations like WPVI for example doing an hour of news are more than offset by the lost revenue of abandoning the genre. Of course, there is the money to be made from those who view later in clips or on-demand, et al. Non-owned stations making more cash does nothing for Disney directly. Keeping something competitive in that slot does. They may try and fail with an initial replacement. Such is life. But if, and it's a big if based on one comment at this point, he leaves after this contract, that slot is going to remain in ABC's control. Personally, I'd love to see Nightline reclaim the spot, but I know that isn't the smart business play here. It's just a personal preference from someone with no skin in the game.

  17. I would doubt it. Hasn’t the JKL hour been fairly successful for ABC? Seems like they’d want to find a suitable replacement than abandoning it.

  18. Tegna must have forgotten they have acquired some long-standing juggernauts, for some of those crown jewels were lost in the shuffle are now a shell of themselves (see WFAA, WWL) thanks to the tomfoolery over the years. I understand company mandates, but everything isn't meant for everyone.

  19. If you put it one way or another, you could see on one end that Tegna has good production values, but on another, you get an annoying news theme (C Clarity) that “all stations HAVE to use”. I’ve seen stations like KYTX (on their morning show called “Morning Y’all”) use other themes for stuff. Totally weird.

  20. Has their been criticism of Gray, I have only heard things about Nexstar, Sinclair, and Scripps (just off the top of my head)?
