  1. I think it's supposed to be a rip-off of the Ch-8 in Fort Bragg, CA that used to do some news way back in the dark ages. Psssst... Nobody in Northern California says "Norcal". Yes, it's acceptable to say "Socal" when referring to all counties south of Santa Barbara....not to be confused with "Soquel" located in Santa Cruz County. Just like no sane native Californian would ever say "Cali". Hollywood screws everything up.

  3. Poor and givivg up? Really? ABC's World News Tonight, World News Now, America This Moning, Good Morning America Weekend, Nightline AND 20/20 have shared the same space (and sets) for years, and no one said crap about them being poor. And funny thing, (almost) all of them are (in some ratings) #1! Thing is, CBS could've built a new set for the Evening News, but chose not to because the CTM set has and does everything EN would need for its' presentation to emphasize it's preference of substance over style. Just sayin'.

  5. Now everyone is talking about who leaked the video... That's all fine and good...but anyone with even a passing knowledge of the NBC routers at 30rock know that that isolated camera feed could have been accessed and recorded from maybe 100 or more work stations in the building ...via the in-house routing switchers. Heck it can even be accessed and recorded off-site like at the NBC field shop....and via IP. Besides....what "high level" NBC management type even knows how to work the switchers...and even then...the union hacks would have a fit if they saw management on that equipment. So I say you have maybe 2000+ possible suspects at NBC.... Good luck finding the "leaker". STOP HAMMERING:smash:

  7. It was a combination of suddenly having to expand (they literally said of a full 10pm, which would have featured the 9pm duo of Karen Carns and Fred Powers, “We’re not staffed to do it” — though GM Pat North promised "We will do it as soon as we possibly can, probably midseason") and then finding that their stopgap late news was a ratings contender. It wasn't until the 1998 "CBS 5" relaunch that they had a full-length 10pm. That theme sounds like Kalehoff. I am anxiously awaiting seeing this — it's one of the last big gaps we now have for KPHO!

  8. Not just the first five minutes -- that was the length of the entire newscast at the time. Because four other stations were already airing news at 10 p.m., KPHO had decided to counterprogram in that timeslot instead of going head-to-head with full-length newscasts on KTVK, KSAZ, KPNX, and KNXV. Therefore, for its first few years as a CBS affiliate, the station aired a five-minute newscast at 10 p.m. and followed it with syndicated episodes of Seinfeld.

  9. Yeah, it’s on Charter within upstate New York and Connecticut. Here’s a clip of the NYC Easter Parade (from NY1) in 2000.

  14. I’m assuming that affiliates have to have something absolutely epic occur to be able to pre-empt Olympic coverage. During the Rio olympics there was a supposed shooting inside Crabtree Valley Mall. WTVD went all in for two or three hours with reporters live around the exterior of the mall while WRAL broke in once or twice for a minute or so and ran crawls. It was a huge story for the day. No way will NBC let them kick olympics for basketball. My bet is on Fox 50.

  16. It really wasn't like what FTV made it seem to be. I watched it, and what it appeared to be reaching for is the "Next" format, or a newsmagazine. Still had an A-block, weather and sports. It still has kinks, but it could work. I just wish folks wouldn't take the sensationalism/over the top analytics from the FTVLive tabloid so seriously.

  17. Going back on KSDK using Hearst-inspired graphics, I wonder if you can actually find demo reels from that company during the 1990s. They are my second favorite design company, the first being Tvbd/JC Burns. Also, a KPHO Brief from 1994, during their "Fresh News" era. If you look in the description, you'll see ewjxn's working on uploading the first five minutes of this newscast tomorrow, meaning another rare Phoenix gem will be uploaded!

  18. I agree. There's no obvious internal choice, and an external choice would result in the same culture clash issues that happened during the Katie Couric era. I say let people do it a few weeks at a time. Anthony Mason is always great, but why not let others do it too. I wondered if maybe they'd consider Norah O'Donnell and move up Margaret Brennan to CTM; she's been filling in a lot more.

  21. Certainly sounds like it based on one quote in FTV Live's article on it (emphasis original) http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/9/22/tegna-blowing-up-the-news-in-norfolk Somewhere I think Jim Kincaid and Terry Zahn are doing rapid spinning in their graves.

She fills the investigative reporter spot left vacant long ago when Sarah Wallace was forced to leave and before "7 On Your Side" encompassed both consumer news and investigative reporting.
