  1. Ah yes....the middle finger incident. I remember it well. I'd give anything to see the Dave Kaylor Hobo story! That and his dentures incident during a political convention in 2000. Back to Columbus picking up market rejects.....the short tenure of Pete Scovill at WSYX/WTTE can be summed up in one of his stories. Tossing to Scott Taylor, who works (is live) at Riverside Hospital about the crash landing of a Beechcraft Banana (Bonanza) at Don Knotts (Scott) airport. Ok...back to the TEGNAfication of their newest stations...including WBNS.

  2. Yeah, and I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell. They didn't know.? They knew because it was a couple of BNS employees that told me that it was a matter of time. The Dispatch, ONN and it was only a matter of time before they would sell. The old man died and his children didn't see any interest in owning a television operation. The problem has been the folks at BNS has rode the wave for a long time, and being a family owned station they had it all. Now, they have to compete in this new era being held by a company that owns more than (2) stations. Yes, The Wolfe family has had its hand in a lot of things, but they knew it was a matter of time. The hiring of Ms. Harris from down the street was a band-aid to keep the popularity of the station brand going. Gannett did own WLWT back in the 90s, so you want them back under TEGNA control. Hearst has made gains with WLWT moving #2 in early evening moving WCPO (3rd). I see Hearst as stable and steady. They have their hands in other areas besides media. If Cox (Terrier) don't work out. I definitely want Hearst getting Cox stations. It wasn't as quiet. Yolanda gave her a shout out and it was put out there. Now another one has left that was very quiet. Was Shelby Kroft who came from WISN. Well, guess what? They knew it was a matter of time. I had spoken to a couple of BNS employees who told me that they knew the writing was on the wall. What are they upset about? Are they upset that the children didn't want to keep the station? That 535 million looks good and the family will keep their real estate holdings. Gimme a break! Yes, it an end of an era I will say that, but the folks at TEN TV have been spoiled. Now they know what the folks at WSYX & WCMH have gone through over the years. They will be ok.

  3. They should have known that it was only a matter of time. A two-station company can't compete in the current environment. It would be different if they were an independent station, but as a network affiliate they have too much to lose.

  4. OK, one more off-topic post . Since being on at WCMH Darlene Hill has said she went to Ohio State in the late 1980s. Her hiring still comes as a head-scratcher seeing how she was still freelancing in Chicago weeks before being on in Columbus. The Doug, Mona, Jimmy & Jym era at WCMH was before my time, but from all indications Doug Adair was a real newsman's newsman, and was also a good guy all-around. I don't really critique anchors too much because I don't want them telling me how to do my job. I also personally know Colleen Marshall. A hell of a journalist, she is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Her husband also used to work at WCMH as a photographer and editor.

  5. 10TV’s cable penetration is insane... they reach as far west as Dayton, as far south as Scioto County, as far north as the Cleveland area (on cable) and as far east as Parkersburg/Charleston, WV.

  8. The Tegna press release says that they now cover 2/3 of all households in the state of Ohio. That sounds like an exaggeration to me, but someone else can run the numbers. Again, $535 million is a hefty price to pay for two TV stations, an LPTV and 1.1 radio stations (WBNS-AM is a non-factor). I don't see who else could have paid such a hefty price other than Tegna. They would be wise to leave existing management in place because that is top of the market and corporations have a history of screwing up their acquisitions. Tegna isn't so bad compared to the alternatives. I don't see how you can be in the business other than to be big since it is so technology-driven these days. Tech is expensive to implement. Two stations bearing that cost instead of being able to spread out the cost over 50 stations is unsustainable. And then you have the critical mass you need to negotiate with networks and to acquire programming. It's easy to see one of the big operators squeezing syndicators to pull Dr. Phil and the networks to pull affiliations away from a smaller company without a lot of leverage.

  10. Three years ago, I may have been ok with this. But what they have done with their stations since then, you may as well hand off the #1 position to WSYX....maybe WCMH. They've trashed so many of the former Belo their own stations when they were part of Gannett...its still to be seen if they screw up their newer acquisitions. So what's left for the Wolfe family....their foundation? The Banks, Newspapers and Shoes are long gone.

  12. The second transmitter is probably irrelevant, especially since WICD is pretty much a total satellite of WICS now with no original content other than ids and maybe some ads. The "Code Red" is just worthless fear-mongering, that worsens the relationship between the viewer and the meteorologists. It puts an undue burden on the meteorologists to hype up a weather event that may not live up to its potential harm, and can make the viewer less-trusting of them when it fizzles out or isn't the "eye candy" that it was hyped up to be. And in the era of pissed-off viewers venting on stations for cutting into their programming, it only makes it worse when they have to. I'm just waiting for Boris to chime in on this, bonus points if he brings up the "terrorism alerts" that were used during the 9/11 era.... Here's the bottom line (see what I did there?) JUST LET THE METEOROLOGISTS DO THEIR JOB!!! They know the weather (at least the good ones do), and work in the best interest of their viewers to provide usable forecasts and potentially life-saving information. While it's not technically required, most stations that can put out a forecast will be on-air covering a life-threatening weather event for the affected viewers, or at the very least, have the warning up on the screen through maps, graphics, or at the very least, and EAS alert.

  13. Not just the middle finger incident. At Kaylor retirement, she threw some lightweight shade at Kaylor. Again, these two were never friendly vs. his relationship with Andrea Cambern which were more happy & friendly. When she jumped over to 10TV she became a terror. Not just her but some other talent who've jumped from the competition that goes over there the attitude does change. I won't speak badly of Chris Bradley, because he died. However, he was a nice man, but I did hear the conversation himself about Mike Davis. I'm just leaving it at that. I do think the folks at BNS ego got big because of the #1 status and big paychecks. I was always a fan of Colleen Marshall her doing weekends and moving up to Angela spot on the weekdays. She went back to school and got her law degree while doing the news. She looks really great, and she continues to be some of the last talent there. Plus she has been there 30+ years too.

  14. If you can find it, dig up the Doug Adair tribute from Virgil Dominic. He said the most amazing thing about Doug Adair was that back in the day when they didn't have teleprompters, news people would memorize their scripts. Doug wouldn't do that, he ad-libbed everything. Although this was before my time, that's what they said Chet Long used to do. I've also found that public speakers who ad-lib tend to give more interesting presentations than people who read a speech. (Kasich is a good example of this and, dare I say Trump?) This was back in the 1970's (?) when I was still in high school. Mona Scott (in her WLWC days), Vicki Grant, Angela Pace, among others, all caught my attention and I don't typically have crushes on black chicks. Maybe it was those teenage hormones, but she was very good looking when she first started.

  15. Doug/Mona/Angela/Jimmy & Jym made NewsWatch4 the best ever. However, I had a crush on Michelle Gailiun on Channel 6. Dave Kaylor, he just beat to his own drum, and I've heard the same from ppl who didn't like him. When Angela, jump from Channel 4 to 10 her ego and that big paycheck got the best of her because she wanted more $$$ from Channel 4 and they weren't going to pay her. She became an egomaniac and her and Kaylor has disdained for each other. Cabot Rea, he was another egomaniac too. I like good presentation skills, but don't just read the news. You definitely need to have a personality and show some emotions when doing many different stories. Having anchor/reporter skills are good because there some reporters who are bad at anchoring.

  16. IIRC, Tyler Bacome worked in Columbus before Indianapolis....sort of a lateral move market-wise. Also, Bob Hetherington was WUAB's original 10pm anchor before coming to WSYX in the 90s. Scott Light is in a better place...or so we can hope coming from Atlanta. Sort of a reverse Ben Swann situation since he went from Cincinnati to that dreaded CBS station in Atlanta to well....you know the rest of the story. Another out-of-market move was Rodney Dunigan. He's way better off at WSYX than he was at WPTY/WATN. (and they're getting sold to Tegna as well!) WKYC was in the ratings toilet back then as an O&O and a farm team for network talent. Even Al Roker left there to move to New York and eventually NBC itself. Doug & Mona were far overshadowed by the anchors at WEWS and WJW back then. I believe Judd Hambrick had his first stint as an anchor there after leaving WJW and Doug/Mona moving to Columbus. Needless to say, their arrival and the rise of NBC at the time pushed them to the top of the ratings for a while.

  17. True that. I’m still sad Andrea Cambern “retired” - and it’s been 7 years.
    1 point
  18. I see Jerry moving into retirement. He 70 yrs old, and I see Dom & Angela Pace (who upstairs) all moving into retirement once things settle down. I would see Tracy & Mike being the more established ones still there. As well Yolanda, and I was told BNS paid some big bucks to bring her from down the street. Now I don't know, but under Sinclair, she was barely hitting $100,000. I assume they pony up at least $200,000. Andrea Cambern was making 250+ but when Angela Pace was doing the news she was making close to $500,000 and even got more when she moved upstairs. That why I think she will retire because of her paycheck.

  19. I kept wondering why Karina Nova, didn't want the job. She had been traffic anchor and definitely a rising star, and thought she would be good in that role. I hope she does sticks around. TEGNA likes young people.

  22. According to this sales reel (at 1:40), NBC 5 and/or Telemundo Chicago are going to be launching some sort of lifestyle program in the near future. I haven't heard anything else, so this might be the first hint at such a move.

  23. I knew TEGNA would get those two stations. Hearst is very picky and uppity so to speak. Meredith and Graham IMO should be making some backroom deals, for Graham to continue. Sinclair & Nexstar have their footing in the market. WBNS will stay the same for NOW, later in 2020 into 2021 it will not be the same Wolfe Banks News and Shoes. I think it great to shake up the market, and BNS yes it a legacy station, but the tide as turn. Time for a new era in market 34.

  24. $535 million for all of that isn't cheap, but it's definitely not what this collection of stations would have sold for 10 years ago. We're seeing a lot of these sales not because the companies necessarily have "deep pockets", but because the stations value has plummeted to the point where groups like Tegna don't have to reach nearly as deep into said pockets to buy them. Another factor is the market is beginning to level off, and investors for these mega groups are starting to feel comfortable with throwing large sums of money around again.

  25. Damn. I was hoping Hearst or Graham would get WBNS and WTHR. Silly me.

  26. I'd told you all that the Wolfe Family was going to sell. Getting Yolanda Harris from WSYX was just a band-aid. The Old man died and his children were itching to sell. The Dispatch, ONN all have been gutted. It was bound to happen. As for WBNS yes, it an end of an era, but now WSYX & WCMH can battle for top spot. WBNS may stay #1, but TEGNA a hot mess at times. WOW. Definitely, want to know what going on at Twin Rivers Dr. I always thought TEGNA would be apart of BNS fabric.

  28. WTHR has been a longtime ratings leader in Indianapolis, but they've been cutting back in recent years too. Good news for the competition...

  29. Indy is not the most stable of places these days either. With the WTHR sale, WRTV becomes the only station not seeing a owner change in the near future.

  31. I Called this three years ago when they first sold The Dispatch. I knew this was coming and THIS VERY COMPANY TOO! Here the thing if you are Sinclair or Nexstar this morning... Columbus has just become a WIDE OPEN MARKET where WCMH or WSYX could EASILY be #1 in the market!

  33. Mind blown. How could the FCC have thought that way back in the day, especially since denying people the access to life-saving information slaps in the face of a station operating in the public interest! Then again, this was the days before doppler radar, computer satellite imagery, and even qualified meteorologists at the local level in many places. I remember the days when all you would see on the screen would be the "W" graphic...then came the weather icon graphics with "WATCH" and "WARNING", and later, the county maps with the appropriate watches or warnings in different colors. And eventually, the "polygons" began to focus on affected areas within and encompassing counties. Plus, even in the era before VCRs, DVRs and on-demand television, if a show was pre-empted, you were truly SOL.

  34. This. CNN Newsource was probably already routed into the switcher and the producers just went with whatever feed would put pictures of the news on-air the fastest. The last thing on their mind was "Gosh I wonder if WABC is feeding this somewhere. Let's waste time getting that feed routed into the switcher instead of taking the one already available."

  43. I’m sick. However, it was bound to happen. The paper was sold in 2014. Daily circulation for the Dispatch had significantly dropped before that. Real estate is the Wolfes’ main cash cow, not broadcasting. Very sad day for Columbus media. However, my focus is more on the guys who have been working at 777 Twin Rivers Drive for 30+ years and are now in danger of losing their jobs, or being forced into retirement...
