  1. KWQC finally made the switch to GrayONE, and it's probably the best implementation of the package thus far.

  2. Those game show hosts also came from other fields. They were not sent down from on high to become game show hosts from day 1. Alex Trebek’s own book details how he wound up where he did.

  3. When I last watched just before Jim’s retirement I had the same network nightly news impression except 6 seemed even more professional.

  4. I've always viewed WABC's visual format as a take on print-tabloid aesthetics. While the newspaper age definitely on the wane, in a lot of aspects NYC is still a tabloid town, especially among working class people. The large text probably doesn't hurt with an older demographic either. While I haven't been a fan of WABC's previous looks, I kind of got what they were going for: legibility, bold flat colors, a general "punchiness" - a loud look for a loud town. This new look is a nice 30 year time warp to the present, but still within the realm of WABC's overall visual tradition, can't complain!

  5. TV Globo began renovations in its newsroom in São Paulo, where the national news programs Hora 1, Jornal Hoje and Jornal da Globo are broadcast. A temporary space was set up and is expected to be completed in 3 months. Making a comparison: Jornal Hoje: Jornal da Globo:

  6. I don’t think so. The role of career game show hosts made more sense when game shows were in greater demand by the networks to fill out the morning and afternoon hours. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having people who don’t strictly host game shows do just that; to me, comedians are especially great in that role. Keep in mind, it isn’t anything new. Dick Clark was primarily known as an DJ, not as a game show host. Alex Trebek was a CBC DJ before he hosted game shows. Pat Sajak was a local weatherman. The only modern example of a career game show host that I can think of is Jeff Probst.

  7. Sure. But it's like saying calling NBC Comcast because they own them.

  8. The CBS owned stations have picked up a new Jaleel White hosted game show, The Flip Side, for fall

  9. Someone else, perhaps you, also talked about WABC's NY Post look and feel. As for tabloid, I would love to see what Sunbeam would do with NYC station lol. As others have said, their look must be deliberate, because it's hard to believe the #1 station in the country would be that aesthetically clueless. Especially considering sister stations KABC and KGO look so much better in contrast. Jim Gardner not Vance I should say. This was perhaps WABC's last decent graphics package:

  11. Any market that has to deal with a significant amount of severe weather/tornadoes/hurricanes, I can see at most 6. Have 2 in-studio, and instead of using reporters/mmjs, use the other 4 out in the field for reports, so they can give first-hand meteorological reports of damages, etc and fill-ins... I don't know why stations all of a sudden had a need to have a different meteorologist for each damn newscast of the day... No wonder they are starting mets at $15k a year.. there's no work

  12. Sorry to revive an older thread, but was going through some old news clips on an old hard drive and ran across WJLA's weather team in 2012 - They had 13 weather people on staff: - Chief Meterologist: Doug Hill - Senior Meteorologist: Bob Ryan - Meteorologists: Adam Caskey, Alex Liggett, Brian van de Graaf, Devon Lucie, Eileen Whelan, Jacqui Jeras, Ryan Miller, Steve Rudin - Forecaster: Dave Zahren - Weathercasters: Chad Merrill, Mike Stinneford IIRC, Devon Lucie was pretty much NewsChannel 8, and I think the 2 weathercasters were tied to WTOP (longtime weather partner), as they didn't list "ABC7" in their titles... Regardless, that's a lot on staff... Jim

  14. When I think Byron Allen, I think of his Entertainment Studios show from years ago that would be on before the morning news. And those shows were meh at best.. So to consider him a top rate broadcaster would take some time...

  15. Birmingham is not too far from Huntsville, home of Baron Services, the other major supplier of broadcast weather systems next to IBM (WSI/WeatherCentral/The Weather Company). It was founded by meteorologist Bob Baron, who worked at WAAY and WAFF in the 80s and 90s. WBRC also uses Baron products including their VIPIR radar. WTVA has always punched above its weight for that market size. It's been a trailblazing station going all the way back to its founder, Frank Spain, who literally built the station by hand (the equipment) back in the early days of television. It's good to see Allen Media keeping the station above the pack.

  16. On a semi-random note (a thought brought on by Mayim Bialik's ousting at Jeopardy), it's kind of interesting that we're well past the era of "career" Game Show Hosts. Like, the days of having Bob Barker, Alex Trebek, Bill Cullen, Wink Martindale, Tom Kennedy, etc are behind us now and it's really a shame. It's like they now throw in someone from some other medium to be game show hosts now, like comedians, actors and sports personalities. Like we now have Michael Strahan (sports) on Pyramid. Steve Harvey (comedian) on Family Feud. "Blossom" was (partially) the host of Jeopardy. Do you think we'll ever see game shows go back to a model of having hosts that specialize in game shows?
