  1. The only way they can make the newscasts better is by having each station serve their respective markets, not this consolidated nonsense.

  2. Still better than WJW's "ei8ht is News" period from around the same time-- they didn't constantly repeat the moniker at every turn.

  3. It sounds like he is preparing for retirement by being sure to transfer his knowledge across the group. I don't think he will have any on air role going forward. With his experience, it is well deserved.

  6. Little did we know that WTSP would become a sister station to KPNX in 1995. Not to mention the switch from ABC to CBS to go with Gannett buying Channel 10. A connection to Jineane Ford right there. Both KPNX and WTSP are owned by Gannett (now Tegna)

  7. Since all the episodes are available on-demand lately it's probably more that than anything rather than CBS mob-tacting them; at the end of the day it's yet another 'if you haven't seen it, it's new to you' syndicated package that fills an easy hour and captures the audience which doesn't want to deal with Freevee. And it certainly isn't original content in 2024. What is CBS going to do, take away their Dr. Phil reruns? No, not the Dr. Phil reruns from 2018 we air at 4am anyways that OWN and Pluto also air and will clog Merit Street soon, please don't take those.

  8. A call sign change (which won't happen to begin with) won't change the fact they're stuck with a standalone AM they can't sell, with demos older than dirt.

  9. Mission's stations were pulled from Dish in early January 2023, so 54 weeks have passed between the start and resolution of the dispute. Mission's dispute with DirecTV began three months before the Dish dispute.

  10. Here we go ... KRCR ... Northern California's legacy snoozefest ... now has three solo anchors for their evening newscasts. Glenn Cassie has been added there. So, one anchor from 5-6 that retires every few years and then comes back, one from 6:30-7, and then one that does 7/10/11. Either they're prepping for a third retirement for the 5 anchor or they have money to spend. A better idea would be to pair up and have traditional two anchor newscasts because the 6:30 person is very green.

  11. WKBT has had them for over a year. They debuted them when they debuted Ross Overdrive in 2022. It was a test to see if their VP of news actually liked this vision or if he wanted to switch back to the old look. (I worked there during this transition.)

  12. I have so many questions: 1) Does he always do the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of every newscast? If so, Sinclair says you're hired. 2) Happy Festivas! LOL jk. -- Matt

  13. At the 23:57 mark of this NewsActive3 retrospective, a new candidate for one of the worst-- an early edition opening from WTWO Newschannel 2 where the entire opening is in song, and there is no announcer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8yyfpxhpNM

  14. Here are some bad news opens from small market TV in Canada... "Primetime Local News" from CITL-TV/CKSA-TV in Lloydminster, Canada (a city that sits on the border of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan). This station could use a new brand like "Border News Now" or something... Southwest TV News, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. This news operation came about after the closure of the only local TV station in town, CJFB-TV, in 2002. I believe they were cable/online only. CFTK-TV, Terrace, BC (2004). It's the quick fade of the music for me. One more... CJDC-TV Dawson Creek, BC

  15. Technically, Valdosta is part of the Tallahassee market, and before Marquee purchased the station, it was largely a repeater of WCTV in Tallahassee designed for the Albany market to pipe in CBS programming. With WSST up in Cordele, the stations are available on each other's .2s to provide more of a reach since the WSWG signal barely reaches Albany itself. Long ago, I believe WSB was piped in all the way from Atlanta to provide ABC service to the market, from the time when WVGA which preceded WSWG, went off the air.

  16. Here's an interesting one from the "dog days" of WVUE in New Orleans. I call it the Soap Opera-Courthouse Sketch open. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we7_8uL7xD8 Here's a better quality version of their weekend anchors, without the supers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3cUSrTkD6U That logo was kind of ominous too, as about 20 years later, the station would be under water thanks to Hurricane Katrina. But ever since then, they've risen up to become the #1 station in New Orleans.

  18. Worst open? Dude, seriously? MG gave WRIC a fresh new look (FX set, graphics, logo, everything) in 2016 before the Nexstar takeover. Paul Turner became the station's new VO earlier this year. It needed that look.

  24. Somewhat off-topic, but speaking of KSHB...their newscast format back then was interesting to say the least. It was highly experimental. For many stories, instead of an anchor reading a script live, they would voice-track the script over graphics or VO and music. Almost like little 20-30 second packages. The photography and presentation was fascinating as well; music on almost every story, lots of camera tilts, slowed-down shots, zooms. And don't forget the newscast ending in "SEE YA!" It's definitely worth a watch. It almost reminds me of what Tegna is attempting today in terms of radical changes to traditional newscast formats. (The problem, IMO, is that Tegna is messing with established stations, while KSHB is an upstart, but that's for another thread.).

  25. Can we please discuss the horrendous strobe light effect in this and the Fox version? Like holy crap those newscasts needed to have come with a seizure warning.

  26. Looks like they were trying to carry over that edgy early 90s Fox feel to NBC, to disastrous effect Here is their open just one year earlier for comparison

  30. The gigantic 'NEWS' is what makes it so obnoxious. KOMU is owned by Mizzou, but they've done a generally good job of avoiding actually looking like a college station. This, though, lol. Those white things behind the logo look inspired from Media General wayyyyy back when

  35. Bumping this thread to display this: Morris pulled a WTEN* at WDEF in 2011 and rigged their Media General opens. *pulling a WTEN - keeping the same news imaging but changing the L3’s, Music, announcer, etc.

  36. As I stated on the Classic Video Thread, this may have been a temporary look after an apparently disastrous relaunch earlier that year (still don't know what they did exactly, since WRTV from the mid 90s is rare to begin with).

  37. I mentioned in the Nexstar thread that WIAT's been using the open since 2014 after the "WIAT 42" rebranding and the switch to 615 Music's Impact. I'm guessing WIAT has been using the blue graphics since last year although the lower thirds still remain the same. The only thing they used the WFLA graphics package is when they mention their mobile news or weather app during their newscasts. They're probably transitioning to the new ones very slowly.

  40. Someone got ALL the use out of that "2,500 fonts for $9.99" disc they picked up at Wal-Mart . And every darned effect they could find in their graphics machine. For me though, the ad for "96.9 KYSC FM" did it for me. Not even using the correct format KISS FM has, and not using the KISS FM brand name to make sure Clear Channel didn't discover it...yeah, that's real genius there. OMG, Crystal Bee split in half at the end of her weathercast! I hope she's OK...seriously, what A/V club failure thought doing that was a good idea?!

  41. Chroma Cues would work with the CBS standardized look. It's just the rest of the open that is beyond hokey and small-market. But that's not the worst part: "In your community... where you live... it's WJZ. Maryland's News Station." I have no idea how Pat Garrett can say that mush and keep a straight face. Why is K.C. Robertson ashamed to have Pat simply say, "From WJZ 13, Maryland's News Station, this is Eyewitness News" ??? Did K.C. Robertson acquire the computers WKBW ditched after the Scripps takeover? Because it sure looks like it.

  42. And yet WJZ is still first place. They must be doing something right in Maryland

  43. I like Chroma Cues. It could use some updates (as I've said countless times) the current cuts are from 1997. Their graphics aren't the worst as mentioned. The overuse of Helvetica extended however ruins it for me. Some of their graphics are even difficult to read because of it. But the O&O look would be a massive improvement. And Upchurch I believe is around still, I've heard some of his most recent radio imaging (2012/3) and he can definitely bring it up to modern times without loosing the overall feel of the theme.

  44. Man you have poor taste in news opens; while the CBS 2 may be a bit wonky; it's ambitious and a relic of it's time. NBC 10's is just fun, especially the theme which is one I want to see publicly posted if the time comes.

  45. The seizure-inducing flicker at the beginning is really the only downright terrible part of that. The open actually reminds me a lot of WBFF from around the same time...
