  1. On the off chance Nightline actually does expand, I'm bookmarking this. Just saying

  2. When Tom first announced his retirement, if you would have said that the last big sticking snow event he was going to cover would be in mid-January, and that he would be covering a possible severe weather outbreak on his penultimate day on the job, most people would have laughed... but it's certainly looking like that's how it's going to play out, based on the latest guidance from the SPC. However, it's looking like the rain might change over to some wet snow (and probably non-sticking snow considering how warm it'll be for the three days prior) during the day on the 28th, so he might actually get to cover somewhat seasonally-appropriate weather on his very final day.

  4. I really used to like Scripps... Now I think they are complete trash... They're still above Sinclair, but barely...

  5. There’s a limit to how much you can cede. Over time, I think on balance the networks gave a good amount relative to the way compensation has shifted. That time slot remains valuable enough that it’s not so much as a “cold dead hands” deal so much as not abandoning a still valuable daypart. It’s always going to be a balancing act - at least as long as the model holds up. Nothing saying it won’t undergo another seismic shift, but the Kimmel slot isn’t going to be that shot across the bow. and this all assumes he actually does make this his final contract. Let’s be honest, we’ve heard this from many a person over the years and seen it not happen.

  6. Boy, it's been a long time since we had someone start a good old fashioned list thread.

  7. Realistically, the network isn't giving up that real estate to NBC and CBS. The benefits, hypothetical at that, of stations like WPVI for example doing an hour of news are more than offset by the lost revenue of abandoning the genre. Of course, there is the money to be made from those who view later in clips or on-demand, et al. Non-owned stations making more cash does nothing for Disney directly. Keeping something competitive in that slot does. They may try and fail with an initial replacement. Such is life. But if, and it's a big if based on one comment at this point, he leaves after this contract, that slot is going to remain in ABC's control. Personally, I'd love to see Nightline reclaim the spot, but I know that isn't the smart business play here. It's just a personal preference from someone with no skin in the game.

  8. Very underwhelming, especially for Graham which has some good looking stations. They should have taken a page from sister station WJXT whose set looks way better. IMO, stations need to tone down the video walls, quit the furniture minimalism and get some physical set pieces.

  9. This set was used by WTSP from Sept. 1994-April 2001. Also used by KCBS, KSTW, KPTV. Mixed opinions: It offered a variety of backdrops and a projection screen behind the sports anchor. The duratrans "10" behind the anchors was eyecatching. I felt like the newsdesk took up too much space. Maybe it was the faux woodgrain? By 2000, it was looking outdated as the other stations had upgraded their news sets.

  10. CNN's morning changes start next week. Kasie Hunt noted the end of the "Early Start" brand after 12 years as show will take on the "CNN This Morning with Kasie Hunt" as it expands to a second hour. I wonder if she will continue anchoring from the flash cam position, or if they will invest in a crew to have her do the two hours from an actual studio in DC. (Since CNN seems to be making cuts in the morning, I guess I shouldn't hold my breath.) Also wondering if the open and theme will be kept. Poppy Harlow and Phil Mattingly thanked the staff, including the studio and control room crews, for their hard work making them look good. I believe all of these positions are being eliminated as this version of the New York-based broadcast has essentially been cut. Hoping to see Phil and Poppy stay prominent faces on the network and that CNN treats the other employees well. Kate Bolduan, John Berman and Sara Sidner announced their new 7-10 a.m. hours. John joked "You might say that we are reimagining the CNN News Central schedule, but we're sure you know that because you've seen all the promos," adding "This is called a soft launch because we don't want to set expectations too high, but we are allowed to say we'll be a revolution in morning television. CNN News Central, more news, less waiting, fewer chairs." Sara thanked Poppy, Phil and the NY and Atlanta teams. Edit: I just noticed some changes in the 4 a.m. hour as well. It used to be "CNN Newsroom with Max Foster and Bianca Nobilo," and they made a point of announcing this team for the U.S. viewers beginning November 1, 2022 (when the Don Lemon version of CNN This Morning launched). But this past Monday it was just "CNN Newsroom with Max Foster." And then since Tuesday morning, it's been an AC360 repeat. CNN's website shows CNN Newsroom listed for next week, so I'm not sure what's going on.

  11. Way back in the 80s and 90s, the networks were ceding their time left and right as the game shows that filled that time were going away one by one. Of course, that was a different era when the networks PAID stations to air their content....but local ad dollars were more enticing.... Flash forward to today, and you can't pry away network time from their "cold dead hands". And they replace shows with new ones just because they have the "time" to do so. All the while reverse compensation is alive and well and is keeping the whole shebang afloat (for now). The last ceding of time I can recall is "Later" going away on NBC, but even that is filled by a repeat of Nightly News for any affiliate that doesn't want to (or can't) replay their late news.
