This is a fine set for Spokane and market 73. Folks, I think we need to collectively come to the terms with the fact that the money is gone, everything is more expensive, and design trends are different than they were 20 years ago.16 points

This is textbook fascism in action. Use every lever of power to force the media into submission. Punish dissent. Stifle journalistic freedom.7 points

What I will give them is the "local" accent is instantly recognizable to anyone who has spent time in Spokane as the Monroe Street Bridge. For market 70-something in 2025 it's not bad, and in fact pretty good. It will resonate with a local audience. Some of these other "we took design cues from local architecture" sets use a slightly different color faux brick and expect people to get it.6 points

Oh wow. The design of this set took my breath away. Im sure it might have a local meaning but that set it awful. I dont get this trend over past decade of shoehorning in "local" materials or designs no matter how minuscule it might be. That curved bridge thing with a monitor shoved in front of it makes it looks like a local high school talent show production in the school gymnasium/auditorium. I expect to see some teenagers come out and tap dance or try singing in front of it.... Let alone presenting a serious newscast. The logo, brand and graphics are just plain bad. Yeesh. The NonStop local with the red swish looks like a early 2000s dot.com tech start up. It so outdated. And the alt logo with the KHQ and Peacock on top of it looks hideous and just slapdash. Q6 LOCAL NEWS sounded better.6 points

In case you needed an updated exaggerated and catty Post update on the Michael Strahan/Kelly Ripa 'feud' with GMA's upcoming move to Iger, here you go. Oooh, they have to share an elevator and they might see each other, this is the most oppressive workplace outside the Kremlin .6 points

The mod team has established that we have too many of these catch-all threads, and it's not just a logo or correspondent change that's leading to its creation. This specific storyline with the show isn't likely going away anytime soon. It may evolve and eventually turn into a catch-all, but this feels important enough, at this time, to keep this as a single topic discussion.6 points

Hello, everyone. I have an update regarding LocalNewsTalk and our partner Discord server The NewsCenter. On Monday, The NewsCenter announced that it will be merging with the Broadcast Plaza Discord server. Emma's announcement to The NewsCenter follows. There have been a few questions as to what is happening to LocalNewsTalk following this merger. The answer is: not much! LocalNewsTalk will continue to exist, and we are working with Broadcast Plaza to continue the partnership we started with The NewsCenter. We will be updating our Discord page and adopting some Broadcast Plaza co-branding in the coming days and weeks. While the best place for questions about this merger remains the #repack channel mentioned above, I will do my best to answer any questions that this side of things may have below.5 points

The Fleur de Lis is probably the most sacred of all above being referred to "Fox 8". It was a brilliant move by the Bensons when they bought the station, and carried on to this day. And after reading the comments, potentially losing the "Fox" branding is causing some viewers to lose their minds, because they tie it with a certain "news" channel.5 points

Every step and element of a set- from the first design meeting through the final light being plugged in is about money. Larger owners, like Nexstar for example, can get away with the same "set in a box" being mass produced which allows for some of the little design touches to become attainable in the budget. A much smaller company like Cowles, the owner of KHQ, has to pick and choose with the budget they likely have. They chose tech and an overall set that they likely hope will last as long as the old set did for them.5 points

The comment section on @TheRolyPoly's FB link has some people calling out the dropping of FOX for the call letters already... And most are not kind. Hopefully someone is reading the early speculative feedback! Agree that when you're on top of the mountain, you need to indeed innovate and stay ahead of the game, but don't blow up what you're known for (read- the branding, the logo) Isn't a Fleur-De-Lis in NOLA like hiving a lone star on just about anything in Texas? Lots of local and regional pride that goes along with it.4 points

Lonnie Quinn returned to WCBS and CBS this evening. He announced March 14th that he was taking several weeks off to recover from a concussion that was later determined to be a traumatic brain injury. He returned to the newsroom to applause, hugs, balloons and cake today:4 points

This. It's also not wildly technically complex. It's a bunch of big TVs, and that's perhaps one area where everything is not truly "more expensive"... Both consumer and commercial displays have come way down in price. A 75' Samsung 4K UHD HDR smart TV is slightly cheaper than it's commercial counterpart. The fabrication of the set probably cost much more than those displays did total. They also have like, a whopping total of 20 lighting fixtures, which is why it's lit so flat, and why it look underwhelming. Again, this is a trend, because good lights are still expensive (The new WABC set is lit with a lot of Skypanel S30s and S60s (linking the new version because the old version is on clearance sale), with the money WABC spent on just lighting their set, they could have probably bought the KHQ set 10 times over.) and KHQ doesn't have the money to do that. They seem to have dumped their conventional lighting fixtures (non-LED and non-Fluorescent) visible in that last broadcast from the old set, because those are also expensive to operate. Yeah, it doesn't look as good as it could if they had a massive big-market budget. But this isn't a big market, it's Spokane, and it's still a nice modern look.4 points

John Wheeler is only the second chief Meteorologist that WDAY-TV Fargo has ever had. Come May 16th, they'll have to look for a third once John decides to enter a new phase after 40 years there... retirement. https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1073102168184588&id=1000645444489554 points

When WXYZ switched to the 7 First Alert Weather branding in 2011 they started “7 First Alert Weather Days” not long after. They’ve been gone for years now. WDIV then rebranded their weather to “4 Warn Weather” and started doing “4 Warn Weather Days” which is executed in a ridiculous overhyped fashion. Apparently nobody got the memo there that it’s so last decade.4 points
-
That is one of the laziest brand names. I'm guessing AI created that. When have you seen a meteorologist slackin' on air? The only one that I see not 'Weather Ready', is Nexstar with a two-hour delay which can have consequences during a weather emergency.4 points

WUAB has had either horrendous or generic branding ever since “Hometeam 43” in 1999. Between “Hometeam”, “(my)43 the Block,” “CLE43”, and “UPN/my/CW 43”, I don’t think Raycom has put any effort into branding WUAB, or even WOIO for that matter. Honestly, it’s nice to see Gray trying.4 points

the studios were all built with flexibility in mind — meaning they could easily be shared (like Tamron & The View) and used for other things besides a show that airs just an hour each weekday excluding holidays and hiatus… as opposed to EWN, which is on 7+ hours a day every day.4 points

Very concerning. CBS News feels the need to bow down to a president with authoritarian tendencies to have their Paramount/Skydance merger go through.4 points

A forum topic discussing the longest running news magazine on network television. The New York Times reporting major news that will affect the future of 60 Minutes. Executive Producer Bill Owens will exit the program. He cites the fact that he doesn't feel like he has editorial control and freedom to be separated from the overall control of CBS News and its parent company, Paramount. This comes as they've been facing turmoil from the current administration. "Over the past months, it has become clear that I would not be allowed to run the show as I have always run it, to make independent decisions based on what was right for ‘60 Minutes,’ right for the audience. So, having defended this show — and what we stand for — from every angle, over time with everything I could, I am stepping aside so the show can move forward."3 points

Reminders for tonight for those of you who want to record final newscasts of these folks for prosperity and historical reference: • WPTV's Shannon Cake at 6pm ET after 29 years. • WDAY's John Wheeler's last newscast at 6pm CT after 40 years. • KNXV's Katie Raml's last newscast at 6pm MT after 24 years (actually longer, working in promotions before leaving, then returning in 2002). Also, next week... Wednesday, May 21st: • WRAL's Debra Morgan at 6pm ET after 32 years. • KENS' Deborah Knapp at 5pm CT after 38 years with the station and 50 in journalism. • WHIO's Cheryl McHenry at 6pm ET after 44 years (she already no longer does the 11pm). • WXIX's Steve Horstmeyer after 17 years there, but 48 in Cincy TV (delayed from March). Friday, May 23rd: • WBAY's Bill Jartz at 10pm CT (1983-1990 and since 1993). These are all I can find for right now but there's a lot of them coming up due to the end of "sweeps."3 points

Really surprised they are keeping the Cox name, but with Spectrum being front-facing for the last decade, it makes sense to abandon Charter (which always sounded similar to a drug rehab center that existed until 2000). Besides price though, Spectrum is rock solid for me and I rarely lose service, so I must be in a good part of their service area (originally Marcus). It's just sad to see Cox in so many aspects wind down, though.3 points

Wow. She is one of the few anchors I've watched while getting WPTV in Northern Broward County in 2005 (alongside WPEC, WFLX, and WXEL), thanks to a robust analog signal at my grandma's (at the time) trailer park. Shannon Cake is hanging it up after nearly 30 years at WPTV, and this Friday is her last day there. Some of the last of the old guard are slowly leaving this heritage station, and I'm sad to see her go. https://www.wptv.com/about-us/wptv-anchor-shannon-cake-a-look-back-at-her-29-year-career-at-the-news-station3 points

This, and if you look at the tour of the building they give in the newscast, the logos on the glass panels in the production/weather/newsroom areas alternate "WVUE8" and "Gray". The same segment, I noticed "WVUE8" and "FOX8" were used almost interchangeably. Are they in tandem? It is transitionary? Not enough evidence to speculate long-term from what I watched.3 points

Please don't tell me they're rebranding as WVUE 8..... Come on Gray.... "FOX 8" is what put them on top of the ratings, WVUE is branding of an also-ran ABC affiliate that was pounded by WWL and WDSU 30 years before Fox came calling. These Fox stations don't quite have the ability to stand on their own like their other affiliated stations. Anything else would be foreign to their viewers.3 points

Steve Doocy is getting a new role with reduced hours on F&F. He’ll be around 3 days a week to do segments from Florida while Brian, Ainsley and Laurence will remain as hosts. Steve has always been the much more grounded force on that show for 30 years now. https://x.com/FoxNews/status/19179282356412993723 points

If you're wondering the "why" for this project... Mainly why it took this long... The exact thing I expected they were waiting for happened. Early last year, plans were released for a major redevelopment of the area surrounding the current building. Of course, they were released before the move was announced, and the current building is notched out of the development, but that means their property suddenly became a lot more valuable. WFAA will likely be next, the city of Dallas just bought the old Dallas Morning News building (after the proposed redevelopment fell apart) to secure more land for a $3.7 billion redevelopment of the convention center, which is heavily focused on redeveloping the exact area that WFAA occupies.3 points

@24994J Why the name change to the thread? Isn't “60 Minutes” a better catch all for any news related to the program, just like the evening and morning programs having similar threads?3 points

I was wondering what on earth that "Remarkable Woman" special was on the CW Sunday night; it seemed so vague as to be a time-buy from some group you expect to carry a generic 'salute to gospel' or 'independent film showcase (of whatever they could get cheap)' that you see on Sundays on a station that doesn't have the NFL doubleheader and the home team is on the other station. It felt like some kind of bizarre Queen for a Day rehash. It also seems kind of insulting to anyone not in a Nexstar market, because the states without a station just came off as having very 'unexceptional women' (they drew 11 randomly from NewsNation but like...just spread them across each state. There's no reason outside Perry's ego that Alaska shouldn't have a 'remarkable woman'). Outside of sports and the good shows they bought, The CW is really no better than the 'i for infomercial' era of Ion at this point.3 points
