And you know Scripps is salivating at the prospect of the political money coming in next year... _________ Maybe they will finally go with ABC 10 [News] in the fall. When the debut their new programming at 4pm
  2. The only person I would beg to come back is Meredith Vieria- Maybe Joy as well. I would have kept Nicolle full time and maybe added a more fiery conservative to the panel. At this point, asking for Barbara to come back would be a mistake. Does anyone remember just how much of a pissy b*tch she was in her last season on The View? No thanks.

There are a few producer positions open on their jobs page. Nothing to indicate that they will be adding a 4pm newscast. They could slide Dan Haggerty over to the desk from the stupid "Live Center". He's under-utilized in that role. So they could be paired: Itica & Dan at 4/6pm, Kim & Steve at 5/7/11pm.
  4. Whoopi wants to see Whoopi "on the beach". Problem is she wants to be paid to be "on the beach". With all the reports out there from last year, she's been trying to get out of that contract for a while, but knows that if she does she loses a nice $5mill... Barbara only has a very small stake in the show now. I don't think she is calling the shots, let alone negotiating talent contracts. This is a big reason why the show has been in a freefall. Had she retained control of the show, there would have been some stability at the very least.

Well since Let's Ask America got canned, and I.E. going away, KGTV will have a 1-hour hole to fill. So putting on a newscast at 4pm makes sense, unless they plan on airing that new talk show with Tyra Banks Was wondering myself. KUSI or XETV, perhaps?

KFMB aired a promo announcing the arrival of Inside Edition to the 7:30pm timeslot in the fall (moving over from KGTV). Leading to speculation as to what KGTV will replace it with (it currently airs at 4pm there). The Now San Diego, perhaps?
  7. Whoopi is owed a reported $5mill next year... Even though the ratings are down, The View still has name/brand recognition. Would they be able to make the same amount of money with a new show than they do with The View? I'm not saying they won't cancel the show, it just won't be done this year. Also, i'm not sure how and what role the affiliates have if/when the show gets cancelled. Do they get a say in what replaces it? do they get that hour for themselves?
  8. Because they have contractual obligations...
  9. Spot on. Reports are that Sherri will be back in the fall as part of the rotating 5th panelist. I do think it was a mistake to let Nicolle go. Even if she doesn't generate the same buzz as Hasselbeck, they could have added another conservative co-host that was a bit more incendiary. Nicolle's chemistry with Whoopi and the others was good, and it's a shame that she is being punished for being more restrained. According to Variety, Joy was in negotiations to come back part time but talks broke down. Everyone knows that Whoopi runs that show- it's why Raven was hired full time, and a reason why Michelle was too. FWIW, Anne Sweeney was the one behind Joy and Elisabeth being canned...

You could say that about half the anchors in San Diego. One can understand if Zouves is not as strong with the adlibing or handling breaking news situations, but she will eventually need to step it up. What excuse do the other market veterans have? If you hear Kushi, Hunt, Soderman, Maas, Denton, Foo, or Erica Fox during breaking news, or go off script then you know you're in for a several minutes of cringe-worthy moments.

The reason I brought it up was because they aired an ESPY promo with Steve Atkinson, and he said to watch his reports on ABC 10 news. Also, the 11am teaser during The View, had ABC 10 News on the L3.

She's actually done pretty well at the desk. She was not given too much of a chance to fill in, but i'm sure she will improve the more she anchors. Speaking of KGTV, have they branded themselves fully as ABC 10 News now?
  13. That bad? wow. At what point does the ND get held accountable? He's been there for a long time, and if anything the newscasts are getting staler.
  14. From what I remembered, whoever wrote the article implied it was (or even quoted her), but then she contacted them and basically just said that if situation presented itself where a scene could become problematic, then they were ready to go with the 'look lives'. So basically, it started off as touting KGTV for being innovative in doing the 'look lives' to stop the 'FHRITP' craze, to KGTV is prepared in case it were to happen. It was a clusterf*ck of an article, tbh. Somewhere along the line, either the author of the article dropped the ball, or the reporter over-dramatisized the situation and did an about-face after she was ripped for it. Either way, it was puff piece meant to make them look good and it blew up in their face. Who else could have contacted TVSpy to have them devote an article to it? I get the need for self-promotion, but jeez they really do over do it. At the end of the day, the viewers don't care if you were "first to report" or "viewers were first alerted to this story from our app". If you are a loyal viewer, you know where you can locate the station (OTA, online, social media, etc.). Yet, for every damn thing it's "promote our app, promote our social media pages, etc." and it happens at the most inappropriate times too (i.e. right after they run a story of a murder, etc.). Hell, it's just not KGTV, KNSD does the same thing as well.
  15. Did you see the story that TVSpy did a few weeks ago involving KGTV and their reporter Emily Valdes? Boy, if there was ever a time that publicity was bad.... that was it. TVSpy wrote up an article on how KGTV is avoiding those 'FHRITP' hijacks and Valdes was touting that they were doing those "Look Lives" if they determined that when out covering a story a scene could become problematic. It was basically a fluff piece trying to make the station and the reporter look good, and it ended up blowing up in their faces since everyone knew it was B.S. Plus, KGTV has been doing those 'Look Live' reports for years, going back to when they were owned by McGraw-Hill, yet for Valdes and they station, they felt that they could toot their own horn. Womp womp. They got ripped pretty good in the comments section, and when I tried looking for the article, *surprise, surprise* it's nowhere to be found. Go figure. I said it before, and I'll say it again... If KNSD can get it's sh*t together, they could really make a strong run at #2. I get the need to hire young, cheap, MMJ's but the one's KNSD hires are not ready. KGTV hires young, cheap, MMJ's yet they are better than 7's. I'm hoping that Comcast will allow more investment in the station once they move into their new building.

So how much Total Traffic charging each station for the shared chopper? They should get their money back--subpar service, unreliable and expensive (i'm assuming). Welk Aviation should open up a shop here, since they do a pretty good job in LA. But the biggest issue (or one of the biggest issues) is that KFMB is getting lazy with covering news. Hardly any exclusive stories and if there is breaking news, they rely heavily on the chopper (if available). Overnights...forget about it, KGTV does donuts around them with the Breaking News Tracker. They're getting too comfy(lazy) with being No.1, but they all end up falling off when they fall asleep at the wheel...

I noticed that. Pretty embarrassing, to say the least. Although, I wouldn't have sent the crappy Chopper 8 either if I had to follow the more powerful/faster LA choppers. I find it interesting that they've yet to give Chopper 8 and updated paint job with the newer logo. We'll see in due time just how committed NBCU and Tribune are about getting their respective stations in this market, their own chopper [back].

So the lil Subaru is the one that "Commuter Carl" drives? Do you know when the helicopter sharing agreement ends with all the stations? I can't imagine KNSD and KSWB being too happy with being in a helicopter sharing agreement in which the chopper is down constantly and/or the images/video is unreliable most of the time. I'm no expert in helicopters, but i've always wondered why the LA stations could use their choppers even when it was raining--yet here in SD, if there is some rain, Chopper 8 gets grounded.

I think it's being tested by KGTV. Looking around on Frontline's site, and they are doing a demo tour of the Nissan NV-ENG truck. Plus, several Scripps stations have had new deliveries of Frontline vans. KNXV has the new Nissan NV-ENG truck. ? The decals say Frontline. Doesn't say Eyewitness News, although the truck is the same color as WABC's trucks.

A test unit, perhaps? I don't think KFMB has any Frontline Comm. trucks. It could be KNSD or KGTV. KNSD really needs a few new trucks.

Yup, KFMB is locally owned by Elizabeth Kimmel. I guess you could say that KUSI is locally owned as well since the owners of the station do live here (which is probably why they sold their Texas cluster). I don't think that KUSI is in the top 3 or 4 in revenue in this market, but they don't have to be, because everything the rake in stays with them. KUSI and their owners have always been very cheap. So if their talent are not paid what they should be, then it's not surprising. You can tell how they run the operation just by simply looking at their set- 20 years and still as crappy looking as ever, even more so with the modifications they've had to make replace burnt out lights, tv's, etc. KNSD has been trying to ditch the 7/39 moniker for yearssssssss. I think as far back as 2001 when they moved downtown. For one reason or the other, it never came to fruition until they made the switch to HD. Very few people (mostly the older folks) still refer to is as 39, otherwise most just refer to it as NBC. Plus, cable penetration is very high in this market, so people are more likely to find the station on channel 7 anyways.

Million dollar anchor? Not that I know of. Several of the $250- $500k anchors that I know of were: Michael Tuck, Denise Yamada, Stan Miller, Hal Clement, Carol Lebeau, Marty Levin, Loren Nancarrow. I'm sure i'm missing a few, but all those listed above have either retired, forced out, or passed away. No mergers are on the horizon, AFAIK. It's stems from the fact that there simply isn't a fit for a merger in this market. As mentioned above, McKinnon has refused to sell KUSI. There was even an article a few months back on TVNewscheck, with the owner/GM of the station and he basically said that he is constantly getting offers to buy the station but has no intentions to sell. There was even a rumor quite a few years back that KFMB's owners had approached the McKinnon's to buy KUSI and nothing came of it. XETV runs a pretty lean operation, so that's the reason why they didn't close the place down after they lost the FOX affiliation. By the way the station is run, you wouldn't know that they were owned by one of the biggest media conglomerates in the world.

Some of the bigger named anchors in the market during the 90s- early 00s were making pretty good money. Quite a few made at least $250k/year, there were a few $500k/year anchors as well. They're gone now, replaced by much cheaper talent. I'd be surprised if there was still an anchor here in San Diego that is making $250k. This market is pretty interesting in that it has quite a few number of veteran talent, mixed in with an equal amount of younger talent. If I had to guess, a less experienced reporter will probably be making between $35-45k/year.
  24. Then again, KFMB is locally owned so the owners invest more in the product since they're the only station they own. I doubt Kimberly really needs the money. Sure, it's within her right to demand what she believes she deserves and is fair, but then again if she doesn't like it, she always has the nice fallback option of leaving altogether. Now would be the time for KNSD to get their sh*t together and really invest in their product to make a run at the #2 spot when KGTV is at their most vulnerable. Unfortunately, you can tell that they're trying to cut expenses in preparation for their move to the new building. Hopefully, once that is done, they'll beef up the staff and invest in some equipment. They can start by getting rid of that broken mic flag that they keep showing on air... embarrassing to say the least. Back to KGTV... Sucks for Pat Brown. Very nice lady and well liked in the market. Too bad she has gotten the short end of the stick twice. First with the NBC 2.0 cuts at KNSD, then with what happened recently at 10. Hopefully she'll land on her feet again. Haven't seen the weekend wx girl, but i'm not holding out any hope.

Kudos to KOCO for stepping up to assist. The mutual aid is more common than one might think, especially during tragic times. Last year when KFMB lost Larry Himmel, KNSD stepped up and provided KFMB some assistance (basically what KOCO did for KFOR), so that more staff could attend the funeral. The KFMB anchors even gave an on-air thanks to their colleagues at NBC 7 for helping them out. You compete when it comes to covering the news, you come together and help one another in a time of need.
