I live in St. Louis and was able to watch the Allman Report tonight in its full version on KDNL. It's pretty much as the clips on their Facebook page suggest, it's a TV version of his radio show with interviews and commentary moreso than regular news (and you can guess the political slant of it all). They do read the headlines at the beginning of the newscast and they also have reporters from WSYX (which is where KDNL's master control is) read national headlines in the middle of the newscast as well. The thing that really struck me odd is that the weather segment was also based out of WSYX (which also produces the weather cut-ins for KDNL for GMA). Throughout the newscast, the meteorologist was talking as if he was based out of St. Louis. KDNL never was part of the "News Central" experiment so this is my first exposure to this, it's kind of wierd to have someone in Columbus telling me what the weather's like here in St. Louis as if he's actually based here. -

So basically they outsourced their production to a third party instead of spending the money upgrading the facilities they already own to produce a program with just enough content to satisfy ABC's local news requirements. Yep, sounds like Sinclair to me. -

Apparently it started last week. It also looks like KDNL has a new logo as well. You can see clips of the program on their Facebook page. For some reason the KDNL website doesn't even have anything about this program. But based on the clips I've seen on Facebook, it's a TV version of his radio show. Which I guess you have to give Sinclair credit for trying something different (in the cheapest and laziest manner possible) but outside of the folks who would listen to his radio show, I don't see how this is going to attract viewers. https://www.facebook.com/kdnl30 I live in St. Louis and I've seen no promotion for this program at all minus the one story I saw in the Post-Dispatch (newspaper) announcing this program. -

David Zurawik from the Baltimore Sun had another article about the fallout from WBFF's selectively editing video for their news packages. http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/tv/z-on-tv-blog/bs-ae-zontv-fox45-20150109-story.html#page=1 -
Adds a lot of validity to the rumors that they're about to dump their long-running "Action News" brand.

Any bets on him showing up at another station? My bet is on WUSA.

TEGNA Broadcasting and Digital General Discussion

Its not new either. Fox is even more strict and even threatened to pull their affiliation with a few stations over branding. Part of the frosty relationship with KTVU was over the lack of the Fox branding and Fox threatened to buy KIRO and move the affiliation from KCPQ partially over disputes with branding. Luckily WSVN is tops in ratings or Fox would be getting on them too.- 3687 replies

It is Steelers country but pretty much everyone on the Ohio side of the market is on the Ohio State bandwagon. -

The reporter and photographer behind the WBFF news story in which video from a protest over police brutality was edited and taken out of context have been let go by the station. http://www.mediabistro.com/tvspy/reporter-and-photog-behind-wbff-kill-a-cop-report-out-at-baltimore-station_b137037 -
It actually makes more sense. Because a lot of people already watch WMC for news and they're both owned by Raycom, it's easy for them to simulcast the news from WMC. Having the same newscast on 2 stations is just stupid and I think a lot of people in that market would be upset if they weren't able to watch the news from WMC anymore. By doing this, they can avoid that controversy and still be able to get addition local ad revenue for KAIT. This is a pretty smart move on Raycom's part.
-
KTVO already has a CBS subchannel so I'm not sure if Sinclair wants to attempt a NBC subchannel as well. The other other possiblilty would be American Spirit (Raycom) which owns KYOU the Fox affiliate in Kirksville/Ottumwa. I don't see that happening because they barely invest anything into KYOU. The market is an afterthought to Raycom after they sold KTVO to Barrington and I wonder if they even realize American Spirit still owns KYOU. Being one of the smallest markets in the nation doesn't exactly bring out the big bucks. So I expect that people in that market will either keep getting NBC through WGEM (Quincy), KSHB (KC), or on the Iowa side WHO (Des Moines).
-
Yep. And Raycom owns both KAIT and WMC so they'll still make their money. Glad to see they'll simulcast WMC because I think a lot of people in that market do turn to WMC for their news and I think people would've been upset if they replaced WMC without simulcasting the news from them. The Jonesboro market gets KAIT for ABC and the rest from either Memphis or Little Rock.

Here's the open with the new music: Seems out of place without the Sinclair graphics to go with it. But maybe that's just me. -

WBFF is in some hot water after being caught selectively editing footage from a protest in DC over police brutality. http://www.mediaite.com/tv/fox-affiliate-edits-protest-chant-to-sound-like-kill-a-cop/ (In fairness the station did retract the story and apologize after being caught but this is another example of why I never trust anything from this station group) -

And trading WTTA for WLUK means that Sinclair got the better end of that deal. Now they have the home affiliate for the Packers and in a swing state. -

WJLA's ticker is now using the same font from the Sinclair package and that goes with their weather graphics as well. Guess it'll be a slow transition but it looks like something is on its way. Not sure about the other Allbritton stations. -
And the Nexstar triopoly in the Quad Cities is official. Now it's only a matter of time before WHBF takes over the 9pm news on KLJB. KWQC produces the news for KLJB as of right now and apparently the contract with Media General lasts until the end of 2015. http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/80497/at-last-fcc-oks-nexstar-buy-of-grant-tvs

Geez, he just had that job for a little over a year. It always sucks when someone dies, but it really sucks when it happens so abrubtly like that. I've had family members that passed away suddenly too so I can imagine how his family as well as the people he worked with at Sinclair are feeling right now. My thoughts and prayers are with them. -

I wouldn't read too much into that. KDNL's web address has been abcstlouis.com for quite a few years now. Their Twitter and Facebook handles (yes, they actually have Twittter and Facebook accounts for KDNL) is ABC St. Louis as well. If this is part of a rebranding, it's an incredibly slow one. -

ABC probably did pressure Sinclair to do something with KDNL, but as we can see, they did it in the cheapest most half assed way possible. Sinclair just needs to sell KDNL if this is the best they.could come up with. Markets much smaller than St. Louis get better treatment than this. -

Seems like a political talk show than an actual newscast. The new anchor currently hosts a show on the right-wing talk station here and his political beliefs just so happens to match Sinclair's. The fact this was announced right after ABC renewed their contract with Sinclair's ABC affiliates is probably no coincidence. I thought WGNO's "News with a Twist" was the most half ass attempt at a newscast but seems like we have a new contender. According to the article, this new show isnt even going to be produced at KDNL. -

KDNL is launching a "non-traditional" newscast, featuring a local talk-show host in January. http://www.stltoday.com/entertainment/television/gail-pennington/kdnl-will-launch-non-traditional-newscast-in-january/article_063117bd-780b-5c58-9302-d01167353510.html -

They've used the Sinclair package for their weather segments for about a month now, still wondering why it's taking so long for it to expand to the rest of the newscast.
