  1. If they have the space, the driver here seemed to be the last chance to get a 30% federal tax credit - 2019 is the last year you can get the credit. Stations may set up their own farms if they can get tax breaks locally and perhaps have the ability to sell it back to the grid. The KNTV / KSTS building has been powered by renewable sources since they moved to their current facility. They don’t have a plant but you buy your energy from renewable suppliers that are hooked to the regular grid.
  2. WBOC is installing a solar farm with 2,088 panels in the back lot of their property. It is designed to power their entire facility with 908 kw. Construction should start later this month and end in June. http://www.wboc.com/story/40173344/wboc-breaks-ground-on-solar-farm
  3. This augmented reality weather is looking good. I wonder if they’re using Ross XPression or WSI for the AR tracking.
  4. I like, WJZ just got two more, but they placed them along roads/complex interchanges.
  5. I haven’t really paid attention to the NewSource produced packages but the ones from their affiliates are usually solid reporting. Also CNN may be turning right as they hired someone just from the White House as their political editor.
  6. Watching KPIX now and they moved the active text area to the bug. Just doing a lookaround it appears of the news producing stations WCBS, KCBS, WBBM, KYW, KPIX, WBZ, WFOR and KDKA all made the switch. While KTVT, WCCO, KCNC and WJZ (of course) where the bar and text area is still 4:3 safe.
  7. They stretched the lower thirds to where the bug is? WJZ has the live bug in the existing position aligned with where the text part of the Chyron starts. They could easily put the stock board or the radar in the area where topical graphics go on the left.
  8. One thing I noticed during a timelapse of their studio construction is that they have a jib in the air? I’m curious are there any tracking or sweeping movement shots used in their newscast? The only thing I ever really see is a shot of the monitor in the up in the grid. You can see it here around 4:35.
  9. There’s a whole playlist with much more here.
  10. I imagine there’s still a bit of news sharing. From what I’ve seen on social media several NBC O&O meteorologists or reporters are appearing to report on local weather.
  11. One major thing GMA needs to do is provide a template so stations have uniform tickers. That leaves stations up to their own devices causing a mish match of looks. They ABC BrandNet box they use has the capabilities to do CG (they do the time/temp) and DVE effects, so it should be able to handle a ticker.
  12. From that video and others I’ve seen it looks like they’re just in color customized Otterbox Defender cases. Those things are pretty tough to break and sitting on the screen directly won’t hurt it. (I had mine do cart wheels down the stairs with no issues and once fall and hit the corner edge of piece of furniture).
  13. Let’s remember having news drives viewers. Look at WWJ in Detroit, they don’t do news and it’s an after thought.
  14. At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if Ed Ansin put some weird thing in the Trust for WHDH/WLVI and WSVN prohibiting their station from ever affiliating with or being purchased by NBC or any form of it in the future. You know like The 700 Club airing on ABC Family years after numerous ownership changes.
  15. I wonder if they could find a location in NY and overlay the peacock and the digital chair line. I imagine they’re rolling out 4K cameras (when WNJU launched from 1WTC they installed a 4K camera for their use).
  16. No legitimate news sources have covered it. A meteorite hits land fairly often and unless it’s a large size, like in Russia that blasted out windows, it probably isn’t news worthy. Ontop or the crisis in Venezuela news crews are likely to avoid the country for their safety or stay in urban areas.
  17. Off the top of my head WDSU and WPTZ.
  18. Is Sacramento an adjacent market over the mountains?
  19. You just copy the link and leave it there.
  20. Likely they’re kept at the DC Bureau or a station that always contributes to a team of reporters. Mic flags are cheap (start at around $50/piece - down to $30 or $20s if you buy more than 10 or 20 respectively ) and stations should be able spare one or two.
  21. From here on out please discuss any set changes for Fox 5 / WNYW over in its designated thread in Sets & Studios.
  22. WJZ weekend news got a new co anchor - Max McGee to go with Ava-joye Burnett.
  23. A lot of stations got those graphics as they were undergoing SD to HD refits. Now while they didn’t go HD until a year later they were probably already switched to VizRT which it seemed a lot of their stations used. WBAL got the logo graphics when they went HD and Viz.
  24. Sky 5 has been flying according to their website. Some stations use a reporter hired by the helicopter company and some outsource morning traffic helicopter reports to a third party who may have their own bird. Was Mike Lorber on all day or just one daypart? The helicopter inn their promos N5QY is registered to Hellinc - Helicopters Inc of Linden, NJ. Edit: Looks like Lorber flew in the Sky 5 seen in promos.
  25. Not sure if that’s a compliment for MSNBC - we are talking about a person who has a gold toilet and his primary residence is golden and marble. Hardly the type for style advice.
