  1. They are losing money because they aren't spending the money to make money. They will go under at some point and be forced to sell stuff...
Then ABC having a 20% stake on Scripps (and/or maybe buying it altogether, except for non-ABC assets and KIVI/KSAW-LD) isn't so ridiculous now, is it?

Besides that, Scripps was already losing money even before cheapening the stations.

  2. Yesterday FTVLive reported on the pettiness of TEGNA management about their union employees. Union employees will not be reimbursed for parking fees at the new KING 5 studio nor are they able to access an employee discount program for major purchases. Today the story got picked up by Gawker bringing the issue to a larger audience.
KGW had this problem predating the split by about 6 months (and this was when KGW was owned by Sander Media and operated by Gannett, later TEGNA, via an SSA), complete with a possibility of KGW's airwaves being sold off to the FCC's incentive auction. It seems that according to those articles, it's more company-wide than we previously though, and we would expect Sinclair or maybe Nexstar to do that. Not TEGNA of all station groups
  3. At this point, here are the stations that haven't updated their websites yet in order of market size (excluding KMSB): 11Alive, KHOU, WTSP, NWCN (not sure if it'll get an update, but it probably will), KING 5, KENS, WWL, WLTX, WMAZ, and all of the LSB stations.

UPDATE: All of TEGNA's stations, except for the LSB stations (they should really have them updated by May, rather than July), have updated their websites.

  4. Don't say it works in Miami because for sure I don't watch it. There's no competition against the gorilla WSVN 7 during the 10:00pm timeslot. As many as 250-300K people (to my knowledge of the last ratings period done about Miami) regularly watch their 10:00pm newscast.
In that case, it doesn't work on those other markets I just mentioned either

  5. NewsFix wouldn't work in the District. It's too serious of a market for that.
It doesn't really work well here in DFW either because it too is too serious of a market (not as much as DC, but still). It might work better in Miami than it would in DC, DFW, or even Houston in that matter.

I think Tribune knows this. IIRC they were planning on doing news in the early 2000s but the 9/11-related economic slowdown killed that and planned launches at WATL and then-WEWB.

It is long, long, LONG overdue to launch though. I'm amazed that Tribune never entered a news share with anyone for that long, the market for a second 10:00 newscast in that market has been there for a long time.

Yet they had a news share for KRCW with KGW, but that's pretty much it. And why don't they go back to traditional newscasts similar to what WGN, PIX11, and KTLA have?
  6. I'd actually like to see Raycom or Gray buy one of the stations in that group. At this point I think the main discussion should be the amount of money that would have to be spent to get any of those stations up to modern standards. One visit to their group website and it gives you instant heartburn more less watching a television news broadcast.
I'd like Nexstar to buy the low powered stations along with WABG, and Raycom or Gray buying WXVT.

Also, WDCW could launch a second 10 PM newscast in DC that will come from WTVR:

    Or more accurately: http://www.satelliteguys.us/xen/threads/wdcw-50-psip-in-washington-dc-considering-a-10-pm-newscast.357550/

  7. WFOR and WGEN are probably the two stations in Miami that NOBODY watches in their respective languages.

Unless its football season or the Super Bowl for WFOR. Nobody watches WGEN regardless if it is football season or not.

  8. The number 1 reason most tv news people leave the business with more then 5-10 years experience is...

They were "sick of being treated like shit."

Especially those in Sinclair's or Nexstar's stations

  9. (Psst, you brought it up, this time.)

Everyone's been thinking that ABC is a seller, but I don't think any of its stations are for sale, or if any one (and only one) station is for sale, it'd be WTVD to Hearst, but besides that, if any, none of the stations are for sale.

  10. WABC, KABC, WLS, WPVI, KGO, KTRK, WTVD, KFSN.

Which one are you forgetting, or which one did they sell in the last 20 minutes?

If ABC is going to sell anything, it'd be WTVD to Hearst, considering how strong their relationship is, but only that station.
