TEGNA Broadcasting and Digital General Discussion
dman748 replied to ABC 7 Denver's topic in Corporate Chat
Another thing to keep in mind too is this: Basically if I'm reading it right and I've been trying to Google this up to do my homework on the part in which is bolded basically Standard General can take Tegna to court for failure to supply the documents if that's what I'm understanding it correctly.- 3687 replies

TEGNA Broadcasting and Digital General Discussion

And that's a huge difference between it and the CBS scandal. Yes the problems are similar but CBS didn't have the pressure from a Soo Kim-like investor to say/do something about that Tegna has. I think some of the shareholders who voted Tegna last year might be inclined to vote for Standard General this time around.- 3687 replies

TEGNA Broadcasting and Digital General Discussion

I figured that B&C would cover it, I also notice the Hill is covering it too. So yeah, I have a feeling that given the scope of it we might consider needing to split it into its own thread. The more I look into this, the more I see it as a very bad look on Tegna. We'll probably be talking about this for quite awhile.- 3687 replies

Here's a good collumn made by the SBJ about the future of the BSNs https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Journal/Issues/2021/04/05/Portfolio/Media.aspx?error=Login+Failed Sinclair is going to have a ton of negotiating to do beginning with the Clippers, Pelicans and Predators all have rights coming up plus the out of market agreements with the NBA and the NHL expires after this season. A lot of negotiating ahead and I'm sure the leagues and the teams are definitely going to hit home to Sinclair about getting them back on the streammers + Dish.

There's just so much that I need to analyze on that article it'll be a long one so please bear with me on this one: That is likely where I see the Bally Sports Extra channels ultimately being used for eventually. Keep the traditional broadcast on the main and then those that want to watch the game from a sports betting perspective can watch it on the Extra channel. I'm a huge fan of this idea, this is a very good way of attracting new younger fans. Both the sports betting aspect of it and this Hockey University concept is a good way of doing that. I believe this is the approach that I'm sure Sinclair is doing right now even with the SportsCenter-esque show that @Georgie56has been mentioning so much of. I think Sinclair really wants to try to finish what Fox tried to start in the late 90s and (ultimately) make it work when it does launch its OTT/DTC service Also I have a feeling Georgie is correct on 2 key fronts: I have a feeling Sinclair really wants to carve out its own niche in a way. I don't see so much of Sinclair trying to compete with ESPN as much as I see Sinclair carving out its own niche in an area of this SportsCenter-style show. One of the advantages Sinclair has is (in addition to the RSNs and Stadium) is the local stations. Sinclair can tap into the local stations for major sports stories as well and in a way that's a huge advantage over SportsCenter right there because you don't see SportsCenter doing anything like that at all not even with its ABC O&Os. They might use the O&Os for like during player/coach interview segments and certain other things but that's pretty much it. This is pretty much consistent with what Bally Sports North is doing by putting some T-Wolves games on WUCW, In fact I wouldn't be surprised to see certain shows actually replace syndicated programming down the road. Again. There's your big hint right there that one of the many shows Sinclair is in the process of developing is a SportsCenter-style show. I think to summarize up all of the points is, I hope Sinclair is learning from the mistakes Fox made. But I'm sure Sinclair also understands they can't be running the same type of programs Fox had been running in the later years which I believe is one of the many reasons why the streammers and Dish has been balking at the RSNs. The RSNs charge way too much for programming that (outside of live sports and the pre/post shows) are garbage..That might be what gets the RSNs back on at least the streammers eventually. Dish on the other hand might be a lost cause though. It'll be an interesting 12 months for Sinclair.

This is probably the Brewers crew as I don't think RSN announcers are still allowed to travel with the teams on the road as of yet.
-
I also found out that KTXA is carrying a few Stars and Mavs games in April and May. While KMYS is carrying some Spurs games too. As I said on Discord last night, I see OTA stations (not just Sinclair stations) being involved more so with the coverage of sporting events potentially making subfeed channels (e.g. Bally Sports Kansas City completely pointless). In fact I would not be shocked to see OTA and their upcoming DTC service ultimately replacing the traditional RSN platform which will likely force many of the contracts to have to be renegotiated.
-
You're on the right track. The way I'm interpreting it from the articles I've read (and I've read those articles more than once) its sort of a mix between the games being broadcasted in markets in which the teams are represented (OTA) and on cable/apps for those outside of the market. In other words those within the Minneapolis-St. Paul DMA will see whatever games go on the Extra channel shown on WUCW, while those outside of WUCW's coverage area will have games exclusively carried on either DirecTV, certain cable providers and/or exclusively on the Bally Sports app.

Hate to bump up a stagnant thread but.. some interesting tidbits from some of the Bally RSNs namely, Bally Sports North and Arizona. Sinclair is apparently going to be launching a 3rd channel known as Bally Sports Extra, which would serve as a multipurpose channel for at least initially, conflicts of at least 2 or more games. Depending upon the situation it'd be a mix of either or both OTA (within the market) as well as on services such as DirecTV (outside of the market) and on the Bally Sports apps for non-DTV customers that still gets the Bally RSNs. In the case of Bally Sports North, WUCW will be carrying the T-Wolves games on 4/3, 4/16, 4/26, 5/5 and 5/7 https://www.foxsports.com/north/story/bally-sports-north-tripleheader-channels-minnesota-wild-wolves-twins-032621 And in the case of Bally Sports Arizona, some D-Backs games are going on Bally Sports Arizona Extra, on both Cox and DirecTV https://www.foxsports.com/arizona/story/bally-sports-arizona-announces-arizona-diamondbacks-2021-regular-season-schedule-032421 This part though I believe its the most interesting part 2 things that jump to my mind right away when I see that piece of the article. It's either a sign that Sinclair is about to strike a deal with someone in the Phoenix area to carry the games or a negotiating plot to get the RSNs back on certain services. If I were a betting person I would say its the former.

Now union members are looking into legal action against Sinclair over the layoffs https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2021/3/12/the-union-looks-at-legal-action-in-regards-to-the-sinclair-layoffs

To add further insult to injury for Sinclair, Moody's just downgraded its Diamond Sports unit yet again https://www.bizjournals.com/baltimore/news/2021/03/09/moodys-downgrades-sinclairs-sports-networks-again.html And the most troubling part of all is this quote The fact that Dish will be dropping the NBC RSNs does not give me full confidence that the Sinclair RSNs will ever be back on Dish even if Sinclair and Dish came to terms on the local stations side of things.
-
This 1 million times over. It really proves that in 2021, trying to start a cable channel of any genre is just not a wise idea.
-
I smell something similar to this happening this time around. I don't think its impossible for somebody at a Sinclair station to suffer what WPGH suffered.
-
I will say yes and no. It will all depend on the level of cuts Sinclair makes at the stations, I will say the ones that suffers the biggest cuts will in all likelihood see newscasts being hubbed elsewhere, those that doesn't see the biggest cuts will probably see their news department remain in tact.
-
Actually what I meant to say is that there are at least several Fox affiliates owned by Sinclair that fits into the WZDX type of stations I consider KDNL/WXLV to be Sinclair's equivalent of WATN/WOI without a full scale news department.
-
We can consider many Sinclair stations to be in that category.
-
Keith Taylor (a big name in the Tulsa market) got the axe, WZTV's sports department wasn't the only ones that got hit hard, the Sports department at WTVC was all but pretty much wiped out, Heather Mills, Gerard Ramalho, Jerry Brown and Amber Dixon all of KSNV all of them victims of the layoffs. There's so many of them it will be difficult to A. Mention all of the ones laid off. B. It would become a list thread. I may need to create a new message thread with you about this discussion.
-
On that 1st one, I think Sinclair would deserve to be hosed by the same people who hosed them for buying the RSNs in the first place. On the 2nd one I see it as a mix of Granite and Clear Channel/iHeart however I see it as more like Granite than Clear Channel as I think Sinclair is way too big for one owner to take on all 160+ stations, I see it as more like the type of deals they just recently made with KBSI/WDKA.
-
I can definitely see that point as well, one has to wonder where Sinclair might've been at if it weren't for Deadspin exposing them for their "extremely dangerous" script. I'm definitely going the conservative route in saying only the RSNs getting sold by Diamond as part of that network's reorganization and even with that I might've underestimated how much worse this could get in not just the weeks ahead but in the months to come.
-
As I said before on Discord and I will say this here as well. Honestly I think the cable TV bubble and the pay TV industry as a whole is about to burst and burst HARD. Sinclair is going to have no choice but to let the RSNs go bankrupt and reorganize itself into a new business model (it's got absolutely zero choice but to do so), they "might" sell a few stations here and there other than that Sinclair is going to have no choice but to do the layoffs and just let the RSNs go under. It's going to happen anyway.
-
Hate to bump up a thread that hasn't been posted in nearly a month but.. The remaining NBC RSNs are being dropped by Sling starting April 1st https://thestreamable.com/news/sling-tv-to-drop-remaining-nbc-sports-rsns-ahead-of-mlb-season We can sit there and say "Charlie is being cheap" all we want but unfortunately, like the Sinclair RSNs, him and his team are absolutely correct about the RSNs This was from a recent interview when asked about bringing the RSNs back to Sling That right there is the reason why we may never see the RSNs return to the streamers or even on cable, they need to come up with either a DTC plan or offering it to customers on an a la carte basis, so far the networks don't want to do either one and we will have to wait until '22 before Sinclair comes out with it's own DTC service.
-
I probably didn't read the article very well then. I thought it said something about being able to watch like games directly on that service.
