There was no need for an actual newscast, especially in an era of internet. I was watching WSVN and they had their full slate of evening Newscasts. All shows from 4 to 7:00 p.m. appeared to be repeats of each other with little local content. Overall, this subject comes up every year. Religious or not, there shouldn't be a problem with having an annual national day of rest. It says something about this country that we get so upset when our daily institutions get to pause for one day.
-
Cool. For starters, what was the necessity of a 4:30 am newscast on a national day off? Could they have made up the ad revenue with one of their specials? Holidays like Christmas are when the concept of a Scrippscast actually makes sense.

The DBL set was better

The only subs that really needs to be documented here is if we get a reporter who never anchors getting to sub or a significantly unusual pairing

Given a consistent decent paycheck for non-taxing labor and (presumably) no pension -- I would do the same. I don't think it's time for Liz to step aside. On one hand if you're paying someone decently, some flexibility would be appreciated. Conversely, I understand the argument that talent has to put their foot down with news companies, because they would literally abuse your schedule and pay you nothing given the opportunity. Just ask small market MMJs.

Yikes!!!! On the one hand I dont think George should be terminated because I can see how someone would mix up the technicalities between sexual abuse and rape. As a journalist, however, one must to do their due diligence to get the fact right. Stephanopoulos comes off as biased and strikes me as someone who was eager to get this incorrect damning information out there. On the other hand, the President-Elect continually utters false claims intentionally which begs the question... should Stephanopoulos be granted grace?

It's like local news design firms unanimously decided for a Microsoft Paint/PowerPoint look. (Example, Nexstar's lower thirds and the current abc logo). Much of news graphics today is uninspiring and cheap looking. It's amazing that packages from the late '90s look more lively than today's work. I really do appreciate that Nexstar doesn't have a standard look across all stations, so there can be some individuality. My contention with modern set design is the overuse of video walls. Large screens look good coupled with furniture so that sets doesn't look barren like KPRC or the Today Show.

These lower graphics are bland. Its basic and rectangular. ESPN and other *sports networks continually trump news graphics both local and national.

Chuck's last newscast was good, and he had a poignant commentary at the end. Especially loved his speech from his 50th anniversary dinner in which he challenged his coworkers to absorb the gravity of where they work. There was a distinct lack of Sue Simmons in tonight's newscast. I was hoping for a pre-taped tribute, or an in-person appearance like she did for Gabe Pressman's death. At least we got a full conversation between the pair during his 50th Anniversary Special.

Cool! I will disagree with Mo Racca's assessment that Duran and Seacrest are the only well know radio "DJ's. (IDK If he meant hosts). Charlemagne tha God and Steve Harvey are very well known.

During the post ATWT gap I also remember Young and the Restless reruns being utilized.

I know, and same.

Speaking of Sky News....with all the other cable networks interrupting non-live programming, MSNBC turn to Sky News for international coverage.
-
Agreed. It's a legitimate question.

And he was on the national tree lighting telecast. Good to see him going out big.

Given how Nexsar has improved the sets of WTEN, WIVT, WPIX, and WIXN, among other stations, they could have hooked KUSI up better.

ABC 7 Eyewitness News thread

This is why it scares me to hear CEO Bob Iger talk about Disney getting out of linear television. It seems to be the least worst of the station owners. They deliver a quality newscast with personable talent, and are often number one in a lot of their markets. I would hate to see new ownership quash that. -
Granted, in smaller markets the 11:00 p.m. newscast is typically a regurgitation of what aired at 4:00 p.m, so it might as well be pre-recorded. But in a market as large as Detroit, where I'm sure there's news happening at night, what is to be gained from pre recording newscasts? Are they saving costs, because I'm sure the anchors are still in the building anyway for a full 8-hour shift? If news breaks won't they just keep having to add pre-recorded VOs? And what time is the newscast being recorded? I assume they do it as late as possible to avoid anything new breaking before airtime? In that case, they might as well just go live.

Yes times have to change and evolve but I would question anyone who thinks the overall state of broadcast news right now is good.
-
I don't mind the no music cuts to break its actually a cool touch. Yeah that 2 minute tease excessive. Agreed! The conversational requirement from professors and news directors can be annoying. Yes, we shouldn't use overly complicated words so that all viewers can understand. We shouldn't, however, be dumbing down vocabulary too much. Viewers can expand their minds. If I dont quite understand a word I'll make inference based on context clues or look it up. News can be a formal occasion, almost like a lecture. Accordingly, all writing wont be conversational.

Part of that is colleges are not doing an adequate job of preparing students for modern or television journalism. In my experience, unless the school specializes in broadcast, the average J School program targets written journalism. An example of outdatedness: Years after I left college, a current professor asked me if it was still useful to have students make a website to reach employers. I said no because instead of having to pay a domain etc, they can just make a LinkedIn page, or post their work on social media and YouTube!
-
Definitely an improvement over what they previously had. The KUSI logo however still looks cheap, like a fake social media page logo.
-
Its grammatically incorrect. If something happened seven hours ago it isn't "happening" it happened. Active present tense is overused to create a false sense of urgency or timeliness.
-
Carrying this over to the WNT thread. I agree with @ns8401. The natural opposing answer is evening newscasts had to switch up the format because it's not the 1980s anymore. Except... Their formatting has largely remained unchanged. What's different is, less international news, reporters like Muir always speak in active present tense, and more stories are being overdramatized to qualify as "breaking news" . Yes things have to evolve, But don't change for a worse product. CBS Sunday Morning remains largely unchanged from 30 years ago and it's now the number one Sunday morning show. 60 minutes retains the same formatting as it has for decades, and it is still one of the best performing news programs. Quality stands to test of time. Cord cutting will always eat away at audiences, but giving them a reason to still turn on the TV matters.

What was up with the frame rate on today's episode? Everything looks weirdly digitized, And the picture color was significantly warmer. Today weird: Yesterday, Normal: I appreciated the warm picture color in the weird one. So much of daytime television today looks washed out and fluorescent which isn't helped by HD. The lighting on The Real was particularly bad.
