Note that Mike Tirico has moved out of the giant studio that looked like an ice fortress and into a much smaller studio with windows over looking the ski slopes and a familiar fireplace

Rebecca Lowe was using that studio for daytime coverage. The lighting made it look less forbidding than it did the first night with Tirico though.

I remember that... the "Red", "White", and "Blue" channels, if I remember correctly.

'76* Hours of swimming and diving!" I started watching Letterman around that time and he would repeatedly snark that line.

*not sure of the exact number mentioned in the commercials.

Definitely getting ahead of myself but do we see NBC continuing live coverage coast to coast for future games? I realize most of the next games aren't very time zone friendly except for Paris 2024 with a six hour time difference. However what about Los Angeles 2028? Could cause eastern late news to go way late and possibly some shows that are tape delayed out west (such as Today) to be preempted or go out early.

Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 will be just about the same time differential. Somehow, NBC will manage to screw up 2028.

I found this schedule from an article on Awful Announcing. This is the schedule for the Olympic Channel every day during the 2018 Winter Games:

05:00-07:00 AM: Olympic Medal Ceremonies (LIVE)

7:00AM-12:00PM: Olympic Channel News

12:00-12:30 PM: Winter Olympics Daily (LIVE)

12:30-01:00 PM: Winter Olympics Daily (repeat)

01:00-06:00 PM: Olympic Channel News

06:00-06:30 PM: Winter Olympics Daily (repeat)

06:30-07:00 PM: Winter Olympics Daily (repeat)

7:00 PM-5:00 AM: Olympic Channel News

OMC is the live ceremonies at the PyeongChang Medals Plaza (produced by OBS: Olympic Broadcasting Services)

OCN is the rolling news, info and highlights service (produced by OBS: Olympic Broadcasting Services)

WOD is commentary, analysis and features, hosted by Jimmy Roberts (produced by NBCUniversal)

From Awful Announcing:

According to NBC, this will showcase Roberts’ style of storytelling including features, commentary and a segment called “Meet the Olympic Press” that will have reporters discussing the biggest news of the day at Pyeongchang.

Definitely. The whole reason for this is that the internet makes it basically impossible to not find out the results of events especially if you have to wait for a tape delay of a tape delay.

Paris is the least hospitable time difference for live American TV, considering that the prime time broadcast would be 2 AM to 5 or 6 AM. I suspect that some of the events that tend to catch a lot of eyeballs on NBC are going to end up on Saturday/Sunday evenings Paris time so that they're live in the US during the afternoon.

I doubt that anything in 2028 would start early enough in the day to cause Today to get pre-empted or going early out west since I assume that NBC is going to get to set a lot of the schedule, but I could see them either cutting or delaying the third and fourth hours to get the national daytime coverage going at noon or 1 Eastern/9 or 10 Pacific.

If they decide to stay live coast-to-coast, I could see them taking Today all the way to 11 or 12 ET (add an additional hour for local news/programs).

They will not add to the 4 hours of Today. The syndicated fare gets misplaced so if anything I’d assume it’d get cut short.

What does airs in the Pacific and Mountain timezones while East/Central airs local news?

According to the majority of the titanTV listings I saw, another extra half-hour of Olympic coverage that is sometimes simulcast on NBCSN.

But I want to know we are missing specifically. Is it any extra events or a highlight reel. Honestly think they should give the time to the affiliates for news as they miss their regular afternoon slot. Even if it’s at 8 or 8:30 pm.

The "primetime plus" wrap up show airs twice in the west — after the games leading into late news, and then after late news. The east coast isn't getting anything the west coast isn't.

The west coast affiliates don't really miss out on early evening news. Essentially, everything is just shifted two hours earlier (5pm newscast airs at 3pm, 6pm newscast at 4pm along with OZone). The only thing they're really missing out on are midday news and the hours for syndicated shows that normally air in midday or prime access.

Looking at APT for Thursday the east has Prime + for 1 hour 25 minutes after local news. Then at 1AM it’s the primetime encore for 3 hours ending at 4AM.

The west has something called Prime West during the east coast local news. Then it’s of Prime + with the east until local news at 10PM. Then there’s the WC Encore that’s supposed to be an exact duplicate of primetime (assuming it’s the same as eastern Prime) and at 1:35AM is prime time repeat (a second repeat?) for 2 hours 55 minutes until 4AM.

What the West Coast gets during the break for local news in the east is more or less a continuation of the primetime show, rather than purely a highlights or wrap-up show. There has been live and recorded event coverage, but no situation where a medal-winning performance by a US athlete is seen. Clearly NBC is timing the break so as to avoid a situation where only the West Coast sees somebody from the US win a medal.

Interestingly, none of NBC's time zone specific feeds go black during the break. From a technical standpoint, a station could very easily opt out of local news or rejoin the network early.

I’ve noticed that the past few days WBAL has been starting their AM News earlier whenever the Olympics end overnight. As Early Today is preempted they fill the 4AM half hour with a newscast. I was a bit surprised that they didn’t JIP some sort of syndicated fair like Access or the preempted Inside Edition.

I wonder if this is the start of them considering a 4AM newscast (with snow threat even minimal ones they’ll start at 4AM). They already have the voice over and it appears in the schedule one day next week.

So what have other stations that normally clear Early Today at 4AM been doing when coverage ends early?

Definitely. The whole reason for this is that the internet makes it basically impossible to not find out the results of events especially if you have to wait for a tape delay of a tape delay.

Half the fun is staying up all night waiting for a medal sport 84 time zones away.

Didn't ABC run the events pretty much when they hit live even in overnites?... Or was it all only prime time?

Dang..I really don't remember now.

WTMJ carries Pickler & Ben right into their 4:30am show, and WGBA has moved up Business First with Angela Miles to fill the hole before their 5am show starts. I assume then that Early Today is on hiatus nationwide as per usual during Olympic time.

It is. Frances Rivera posted an Instagram Story on the Early Today account saying they were on hiatus. Today on her personal account showed her and family on vacation.

The soundtrack used for the intro of the Olympic Broadcasting Services is being used as bumpers and closing music for CBC's coverage of the Games.

That is also seen on, as you can see, the Olympic Channel and it does so before the news begins.
