Samantha 2905 Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Earnings are in, and they look good for Sinclair: Net broadcast revenues from continuing operations jumped 47.8% to $373.9 million. Operating income was $81 million, a 27% increase from a year ago. Both local and national net broadcast revenues were up. Contributors included an earlier than expected rise in political revenues, more revenue from a Super Bowl airing on SBG's 31 Fox stations, as well as some revenue from the Olympics. Lower operations expenses also helped boost profit. "Our main focus now is on closing the Allbritton station acquisition and lobbying to reform broadcast ownership regulatory inequality." — David Smith Per-share earnings came in at 27 cents per share, where they were at 21 cents for 1Q 2013 and analysts forecast 22 cents per share. Sinclair stock initially rose but then fell and is down $0.69 as of this post (more than 2%).
GoldenShine9 1514 Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 LOL @ "broadcast ownership regulatory inequality"...what do they want, monopolies in markets?
tyrannical bastard 4055 Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 LOL @ "broadcast ownership regulatory inequality"...what do they want, monopolies in markets? ...and now they're planning on starting their very own PAC to take care of this, and any other "inequalities" they see fit.... http://www.mediabistro.com/tvspy/sinclair-broadcasting-forming-pac_b120566 I cringe to see how far the Heathens of Hunt Valley are going to take this. It's "advocacy journalism" on a whole new level....

mre29 1571 Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 "Our main focus now is on closing the Allbritton station acquisition and lobbying to reform broadcast ownership regulatory inequality." — David Smith Clearly, they find the very existence of broadcast ownership regulations to be unfair.
sanewsguy 514 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Clearly, they find the very existence of broadcast ownership regulations to be unfair. I don't find them unfair but they do need to be relaxed.
Rusty Muck 4426 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 It's hardly unprecedented. If I'm not mistaken, Clear Channel has had a PAC of their own for quite some time (IIRC, it was established before the sale of their TV stations to Newport). Actually, I'm surprised it took this long for S!nclair to establish a PAC.
Jess 1116 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 I think it should be against the law for broadcasting companies to establish PACs. You know, that whole "public interest" thing and all that.
Samantha 2905 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 As of today, Howard Stirk Holdings has dropped its attempts to pursue an acquisition of WLYH. It is still seeking to acquire WMMP and WABM. I want to say something important. I believe there is a place for minority ownership of television stations, and I believe the FCC can do it. My concern with HSH is that it is being used primarily as a vehicle for Sinclair, not as a vehicle to advance minority ownership of stations. African-American ownership makes sense; of the four markets where HSH either already owns or is trying to own a stations, two are majority African-American, one has a sizable minority, and one only has 12%. (In order: Birmingham, Flint, Charleston, Myrtle Beach.) It makes demographic sense. But that is not the motive for the existence of Howard Stirk Holdings.
LTSC1980 114 Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 As if Sinclair pulling WNWO from BuckeyeCableSystem and blowing up their management was not enough..... It looks like we have a new logo...that can be seen on northwestohio.com It's on "The Voice" ad on the right of the page how much longer before the blue button gets retired? IMHO, i'm having horrible flashbacks of Newport's "overhaul" of WPTY....the "24" is virtually identical, minus the circle and the kerning is closer on WNWO's version. The new logo of WNWO, NBC24, is revealed on their Facebook.....
NEOMatrix 1307 Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 The new logo of WNWO, NBC24, is revealed on their Facebook..... Looks kinda dated looking. There's a right way to do a retro look and a wrong way. Sinclair obviously chose the wrong way.
GoldenShine9 1514 Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 The closing date for the Allbritton acquisition is 76 days away...do they have enough time to get new deals in place in time?
ChesapeakeTV 312 Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 The new logo of WNWO, NBC24, is revealed on their Facebook..... Looks dated, but I'm all for it anyway. After all, almost anything is better than what it's replacing, which is the epitome of ugliness to me.
Samantha 2905 Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Looks dated, but I'm all for it anyway. After all, almost anything is better than what it's replacing, which is the epitome of ugliness to me. In other words, some marketing consultant's stereotypical idea of a social/app logo for the station.
tyrannical bastard 4055 Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 I could see that "24" working with the "Proud N", but anything that's come out of them in the last 7 years or so logo-wise (with the exception of WCHS and some of ther FOX stations) has been so dated and gawdy. Notable examples including the recent "Great 38" logo for WTTA in Tampa, along with the re-designed WKEF and WXLV logos.
TVIntheDesert 185 Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Their logo design philosophy meets the "quantity over quality" credo of SBG. They must have hired some graphic designers from Walmart corporate, most likely the person who redesigned the "Great Value" packaging a few years back.
tyrannical bastard 4055 Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 The logos look like those on UHF stations back in the 70s and 80s....and since Sinclair came from these roots of owning and running these types of stations.....you get the idea. It just has a "lowest common denominator" feel to it.....even with these canned donut-hole promos that are used across the country.... (WBFF's Trials & Trouble) (WUXP's Justice Will Be Done) (WNYO's All Rise) (WUXP's Judgement Day) Sense a theme here?.....with all of the court shows that are aired on these stations..... And for comedy blocks of syndicated fare.... (WUTB's House of Laughs)

That is Sinclair for you.
Breaking News 843 Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 All this money they spend on garbage like this and yet they can't spend any money on a in-house news operation for WPGH? That is Sinclair for you. Don't forget WTTE FOX 28 in Columbus from the 80s
Rusty Muck 4426 Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 The new logo of WNWO, NBC24, is revealed on their Facebook..... I betcha more people will see the logo here on this board than actually see it on WNWO itself.
DirtyHarry 745 Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Don't forget WTTE FOX 28 in Columbus from the 80s That logo and the station id itself is one of my favorites. Earl Bailey is the announcer.

Don't forget their "C.More" character FOX uses on all their "my" stations.
sanewsguy 514 Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Here's WKEF's current news open. With the exception of the supers, seems to be as far as you can get from the Sinclair standardization: [yt]pG86OnpSTZ8[/yt]
