Still not liking it...
Rusty Muck 4405 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 That's the new Raycom package that has gone to a few stations so far, at least WAVE and KAIT that I know of. Still not liking it... Considering some of the hideous in-house L3s that WOIO used prior to adopting the previous Raycom pack (in deconstructed form, much like WBRC) it couldn't be any worse. Ditching the ticker a year ago helped, too. THIS may have been the ugliest logo for a mid-major market TV newscast in a long time. What I'll never understand is why WOIO uses separate logos for news and general programming (the "CBS19" logo). Seriously. Just take the block "19" from their news logo, embed the CBS eye to the left, and there you go.

This new look screams CHEAP. They (alongside WBTV and WBRC) should be given a lot of lattitude in how the graphics are for their newscasts. I understand cleaning up the logo, but outside of that, their look was a pretty good graphics package based off of a red palette.
tyrannical bastard 4036 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I hate the new logo...it looks hacked together. They should have kept the "Action News" italicized and the boxes slanted like the old logo.
tyrannical bastard 4036 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Watching the live stream....to say that these graphics are hideous is a major understatement. Everything including the color scheme is bad!

Everything including the color scheme is bad! I know. Even deconstructed from its original color scheme, WOIO managed to make it look worse. What were they thinking?
Jterry 43 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 My only hope for WMC is when they inevitably get this package, they also modify the scheme to their blue/gold, taking out as much of the white as possible. That may make it decent enough to tolerate.
AaronQ 282 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 God I hope that WBTV is not getting those graphics that Raycom is implemented on their stations. I can picture them using a graphics package from Hothaus (but I know that's not going to happened). Also, it appears that WOIO upgraded their weather graphics to TruVu Max.
Samantha 2902 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Is it me or is one line Helvetica and the other Univers?
Mrtraveler01 738 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Those colors do not blend together at all.
ColumbusNewsFan 217 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Wow! Was Raycom drunk when they made that graphic package? Good God Oh Mighty... That is a FUGLY package! :ack:

Breaking News 839 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I say this is the better of all the 19's logo.. The "19" is sleek and better looking vs the fat "19"
Rusty Muck 4405 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I say this is the better of all the 19's logo.. The "19" is sleek and better looking vs the fat "19" I guess the reason why WOIO has two separate logos is because "19 Action News" is on both WOIO and WUAB (7am extension of the morning newscast, and 10pm) and they wanted "19 Action News" to have a distinct identity. That's the only thing that makes sense. The above logo should have been the news logo as well. I didn't even notice that the "Action" bar is wider than the other bars. Looking at it up close, they need a redo. Or a mulligan.
Rusty Muck 4405 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 And the constant bug flipping of the "19" bar between "t", "f" and ".com" gets old quick. (".com Action News" ... riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...)
Big Country News 435 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I like the package minus the yellow in the color scheme, and that bug. WAVE used the package nicely, but WOIO needs update it to fit their logo, or vice versa.

But I agree that the Red, White and Blue combination, at least in this case looks pretty gaudy for a graphics package even by Raycom standards. Wish Raycom gave them more flexibility in what colors they can use.

Looking at it up close, they need a redo. Or a mulligan. Back when WOIO and WUAB rebranded in 2002 the newscasts were simply known as "Action News" with the previous logo without the "19" in it. This is when WOIO rebranded their non-news time as "CBS 19" and WUAB rebranded as "43 The Block". This is when WOIO hired Bill Applegate and literally blew up the last-place news department and WUAB was in dire straits after losing the Cleveland Indians the previous year, which played a large part of both stations dropping the "Hometeam 19" and "Hometeam 43" branding since WOIO aired the Browns (through CBS and was their official partner station at the time) and WUAB aired the Indians and Cavs. The Hometeam look (and later just 19 & 43) used a default Raycom look that many of their stations used until they went HD. WUAB's new format eventually morphed into UPN 43...then My43....and now My43 The Block. As for Action News, they added the "19" and even a "43" about a year after launching to the logos for news, then ended up branding all of the newscasts as "19 Action News".
MidwestTV 1247 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Why does the "ACTION" box have to be a micron longer than the rest? It's making my OCD go wild!!!! Secondly, who the hell does Raycom's graphics? Raycom itself? Because if so, they're either telling them to make them look cheap, bad and ugly, or their graphics department sucks and needs to be totally fired. Their old one is sooooo much better than this crap. I don't see how you have companies like Hearst and Gray that can actually make nice standardized graphics, Scripps that make decent ones and seem to learn from their mistakes, and Raycom and Sinclair that just make utter crap that gets worse each time. I can't believe they looked at that and thought that it was nice.

I can't believe they looked at that and thought that it was nice. They have a station that actually makes decent graphics (WBTV) but for the life of me, I can't figure out why they can't make those the group standard. And they have a history of shitty graphics. Look at the graphics they had before the current/soon to be previous graphics. I remember these that WECT had with some terrible L3s. Seriously, who in their right mind thought these looked good?
swillh2k2 205 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Our Lord and Savior I had no idea who that was at first, but I figured it out...
