KNWA had previously used the KFAA calls from 1989 to 2004, adopting its current calls shortly after being sold to Nexstar.

Unless otherwise noted, this would mark the first time the same base call letters, disambiguated only by different leading prefix letters (“W” swapped for “K”, or vice versa), were used on a duopoly. Until now, there only have been cases of this occurring within the same station group, but in different markets (the Big Three’s New York and Los Angeles O&Os being a major example), as well as cases like WPKD (a nod to parent CBS O&O KDKA) where the junior partner station’s calls only partially reference those of their duopoly parent.

Didn't WCCO used to have a satellite station with the KCCO calls?

Pittsburgh couldn't do the same with KDKA and WDKA since the WDKA calls have been in use since 1997 in Paducah, KY on the MyNetworkTV station Sinclair once owned with KBSI.

Yes, but satellite stations aren’t considered to be a duopoly arrangement until they cease simulcasting their parent station to offer their own slate of programming (like what effectively happened with KNWA and sister KFTA, when the latter stopped simulcasting the former’s NBC programming and converted into a Fox affiliate in 2006).

Not starting a new thread over it, but KUSA has adopted the new open first seen on WXIA.

Hopefully they don't adopt the 11Alive lower thirds. Those are atrocious and distracting. The current KUSA L3s are nice and simple

The number of MNTV stations on this list outside the OKC, SAT and HOU territories confirms this as another last gasp for our favorite 'programming service'. An entire state starved of the network makes me think once baseball season hits we'll see even more de facto drops into the 3-5am timeslot across the country (or like in Green Bay, filling empty time on sub services like 365).

Here’s more information about KFAA.

Outside of Mavs programming, the schedule will largely consist of reruns of shows from Quest. The Monday schedule also has a re-air of WFAA’s morning show from 7-9am and a re-air of Good Morning Texas at 2pm. They are also adding more sports programming in the months ahead.

If Tegna can get their hands on the Rangers, it'll be a big coup for them.  Unlike the Mavs, the Rangers can air statewide, including Houston and also into Oklahoma and Louisiana.  Both teams are also working on developing a streaming app, maybe this could give them the opportunity to create one together possibly with Tegna's help.

One of the best meteorologists in the history of Jacksonville television will soon call it a career next year.

May 30th, 2025 will be his last day, literary a day prior to the start of the next hurricane season.

Yes, this article does disclaim that he is married to THE Jacksonville mayor (and former FCN anchor) Donna Deegan.

Aside from the "centralization" of Creative Services, are there any other layoffs going down at Tegna?

(from what I"m reading, some production teams are being eliminated, in favor of AI)....

I saw a post from someone on LinkedIn who claimed that KREM in Spokane got rid of its producers in favor of AI.  I can't verify that but I wouldn't put it past TEGNA to do that.

My understanding is that as a test, certain stations are replacing their production teams (directors, audio operators, camera, etc...) with AI.

And you think Scripps is bad as a stitch-cast....at least a human is putting that together most likely.

An update from FTVLive.

https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2024/11/19/fired-by-phone

In addition to all of Creative Services/Promos, some sports, sales, photographers, and production personnel all got canned...by phone.

https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2024/11/19/are-tegna-directors-next-on-the-hit-list

Spokane and Memphis may be the markets these moves take place in.  Supposedly, they're still production markets with a full crew of operators and directors.  Usually in an automation setup, directors run the show.

With the Directors worried about their future, could producers be taking over shows, supplemented by forms of A.I.?

My goodness, what a world we live in now...

That's what I heard too. That Tegna is testing (or I guess actually implementing) a cheaper automation system at several stations to see if it'll work in place of the traditional systems (Ignite/ELC/Overdrive). Sounds like some of the stations selected were already automated too. Not sure what the AI component is or could be.

The KREM guy on Reddit said all production staff were laid off, but I can't imagine the technology exists yet to run completely without a director in the booth. Unless Tegna is fine with low quality productions that have no flexibility...?

Personally, I CAN imagine software that does the coding part, which would enable a single director to then be able to booth multiple, possibly back to back shows, resulting in a headcount reduction. Combine that with, and I'm totally speculating here, "hubbing" directing like Tegna has done with graphics and marketing, and they could get some "efficiencies". 🤷‍♀️
