Breaking: Nexstar buys KLAS in Vegas

Breaking News

According to TVSpy.com & tvnewscheck.com Nexstar buying KLAS for 145M. I always thought Gannett would get this station. Seems like the foot print of Nexstar moving out west with Phoenix and Vegas.

Channels 3 & 8 have long been the two big staples in the market, but wondering what next with Sinclair and Nexstar as owners in Vegas? Hopefully Channel 13 can finally step-up and make some big moves. I'm not a fan of Sinclair and Nexstar broadcast model.

P.S. Will KLAS website be mylasvegas8.com?

Is that possible? KVVU uses the word "local" in their slogan.

That slogan never made any sense to me.

So will this make Las Vegas the second largest market to have both Sinclair and Nexstar?

(Salt Lake City is the largest I think.)

I wonder if Nexstar will go after KTVN in Reno next.

...or Sarkes Tarzian for that matter...Chattanooga is another market Nexstar could expand to and compete with Sinclair on a head-to-head basis...

And selling KLAS will finally exit Landmark from the TV business...

This is great. I visit Las Vegas a lot. Seeing KLAS was always a high point of the trip. Its presentation is very professional; clearly the best newscast in the city. Nexstar's KLAS will be different, but the quality will still be there.

Landmark waited as long as possible to make sure the company got the best price. Nexstar mentioned the political revenue in the news release.

A former co-worker of mine works at KLAS, but he's been trying to leave for a while. He wasn't too happy under Landmark, but I doubt this will influence his decision.

It seems KVVU is the only voice of stability in Las Vegas, unless someone is going after Meredith...

Meredith is a real stumper. Their publishing division would scare off any pure-play broadcast buyers (and though it's the more visible part, it's not as lucrative for them as TV), unless they pull a Scripps-Journal with it.

Scripps is in the process of visiting th eJournal stations... i'd be shocked if they left KTNV without a laundry list of things to fix. journal built them a brand new building a while back but didn't give them the money to fill it... the desks you can see from the studio don't even look occupied! they copied some of the bad decisions WTMJ made under it's previous leadership (i.e. "dirty dining"), and, well, look where TMJ is...

there's a lot of graphics/presentation oddities on 13 as well that scripps' obsession over station presentation should also clear up...

I was kind of hoping CBS would have gotten KLAS since they have the Las Vegas CBS radio cluster in the market already. It would have been neat to see this station evolve into a CBS O&O considering Las Vegas is still a rapidly growing market.

Las Vegas is still too small of a market for CBS to considering an O&O for. Unless they get an AFC team, I don't see that happening. If anything, they might sell off the radio cluster before buying KLAS. I would've loved CBS making KMOV an O&O but I was ok with Meredith buying them instead.

I think a lot of people fear what Nexstar will do but I think they realize a lot of potential in this station and will continue to invest in this station like they have in every other market it's introduced itself into lately. Even with the cookie cutter presentation, they seem to have moved past their days as Sinclair's cheap twin sister and are actually investing in their stations.
