BehindNYNews 147 Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 We are expected to get record snowfall in NYC. Stations will, without doubt, have expanded coverage. Discuss here!
24994J 5629 Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 May you all stay safe, but I still laugh at you.
Spring Rubber 716 Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Hey, The Weather Channel isn't even willing to go live for coverage on the weekend (because they laid off almost all of their weekend staff and would have to call in their weekday staff to go live at this point), so I refuse to even acknowledge their stupid winter storm naming scheme. It's pathetic that they don't even care about the weather anymore, just Al Roker and Sam Champion on weekday mornings, and then all long-form programming on weekday evenings and almost the entire day on weekends (aside from a couple hours of morning live shows). The Weather Channel - "Weather Doesn't Happen On Weekends™"
cbs2newengland 72 Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 The Weather Channel - "Weather Doesn't Happen On Weekends™" TWC's response: "well most people in those markets have smmaaaartphoneees, if they carrreee sooo mucch about Juno™, they the cann goo on to ourrrr digitttiaaal plattforms." OTTH Juno is a registered trademark within NBCU, so the only NY station that can capitalize on this naming madness, it would be WNBC and WNJU.

The Weather Channel - "Weather Doesn't Happen On Weekends™" They're coming on from 7-11 PM ET tonight, but they should have been live all day. They should've called in the weekday staff; this is a huge event. I mean, this is why they exist.
Spring Rubber 716 Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Yeah, you'd have to think that TWC is missing out on a huge ratings grab by not being live early enough. I'm guessing by the time they realized that they should have gone live, it was too late to get any staff in there for the afternoon shift.
BehindNYNews 147 Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 They're coming on from 7-11 PM ET tonight, but they should have been live all day. They should've called in the weekday staff; this is a huge event. I mean, this is why they exist. And this is why AccuWeather should have their own channel. Give TWC some competition so they have to cover it.
NYNewsCoverage 308 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 And this is why AccuWeather should have their own channel. Give TWC some competition so they have to cover it. Agreed; I'd take Accuweather over TWC anyday. But I'm certainly excited, but nervous, for what this blizzard brings. May we all stay safe!! And...just putting this out there: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/okx/stormtotalprecip.php Yup...that's a heckuva lot of snow!!!
alex979 119 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 A great column on Mediaite about TWC's programming today... http://www.mediaite.com/online/with-historic-blizzard-about-to-bury-northeast-weather-channel-takes-day-off-offers-taped-programming/
ToriElectra 292 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 I live right on the border between the 6-12 inch range and 12-24 inch range- we are screwed. Yeah, I'm wondering if this will be bigger than the Blizzard of '96. I wasn't born until 98, but I've seen coverage on YT, and it was huge.
cbs2newengland 72 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 A great column on Mediaite about TWC's programming today... http://www.mediaite.com/online/with-historic-blizzard-about-to-bury-northeast-weather-channel-takes-day-off-offers-taped-programming/ Nice article! A "must read" here, but most importantly to the nitwits in Atlanta (which probably has nicer wx) which shouldn't give them an excuse to bring in the A crew.
alex979 119 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 TWC's response: "well most people in those markets have smmaaaartphoneees, if they carrreee sooo mucch about Juno™, they the cann goo on to ourrrr digitttiaaal plattforms." Lol, WGN-TV Chicago (not NBC) anchor Bob Jordan just reported that the *National Weather Service* is calling the blizzard "Winter Storm Juno." Um, no.

Um, no. Ugh, where the heck are they getting this information. Time for NWS to put out another reminder to the press that they do not endorse those names.
NYNews 54 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Why does Lonnie Quinn insist on rolling up his sleeves every time there's a storm?
BehindNYNews 147 Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 Why does Lonnie Quinn insist on rolling up his sleeves every time there's a storm? It's so stupid.
ns8401 957 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Why does Lonnie Quinn insist on rolling up his sleeves every time there's a storm? Because there's lots of snow to be moved.
NYNewsCoverage 308 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Why does Lonnie Quinn insist on rolling up his sleeves every time there's a storm? LOL, I listened to him at 11pm tonight. He's such a "hyper". Lee Goldberg and Janice Huff were a much calmer presence over on WABC and WNBC.
skbl17 188 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Lol, WGN-TV Chicago (not NBC) anchor Bob Jordan just reported that the *National Weather Service* is calling the blizzard "Winter Storm Juno." Um, no. I'd like to see what NWS weather forecast office (judging by the station, it's probably NWS Romeoville) is using this term, and if so, what the name is of the nitwit who authorized such an action. Didn't the NWS just put out a news release a year back saying that they wouldn't take part in TWC's stupid winter storm name scheme? As for the actual storm, stay safe NYers! Down here, this winter feels a lot like 2013; cold, damp, and snowless.
cbs2newengland 72 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Dressing down during blizzards isn't new, and isn't worth adding a Breaking News alert. Look at the '96 blizzard, Wasn't David Lee Miller or Rick Levinthal (forgot which one was at WNBC that year) in a plain, thin sweater reading copy in the newsroom?
cbs2newengland 72 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Ugh, where the heck are they getting this information. Time for NWS to put out another reminder to the press that they do not endorse those names. NBC should sue WGN for using a semi-trademarked name, back to my reply from earlier.
nynewslover 280 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Rosanna and Greg are already promoting their extended coverage for tomorrow.. Scott Stanford tweeted there will be no sports desk tonight.. Will be back after the storm.
ToriElectra 292 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 The Weather Channel is now, with the exception of the logo in the corner, in what Matt Williams termed "We're all gonna die" mode.
BehindNYNews 147 Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 All NYC stations, with the exception of WNYW as always were on at 4am today. WCBS will be on tomorrow at 4am, waiting for other stations to announce their plans too.
cbs2newengland 72 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 The Weather Channel is now, with the exception of the logo in the corner, in what Matt Williams termed "We're all gonna die" mode. I'm waiting for the music to play with that theme. Their regular LOT8s always-sunny-no-storm-in-the-sky-like-theme song is being used.
