Dammit.  The Bally Sports dumpster fire gets a new source of kindling....

As much as I (and, I presume, most of us) like to hate on Sinclair, the RSN business, and the decreasing accessibility of professional sports, this is probably the best case scenario for the teams. A lot of these teams rely on RSNs for revenue, and the total loss of Bally Sports would have crippled those teams.

New deal. Cavs will air some of their games over the air.

Five Cavaliers games will air on Gray-owned stations Cleveland's WUAB 43 & Cincinnati's WXIX 19

Gray has also struck a deal with Tegna, Nexstar & Cox Media Group to air some or all five games in nearby markets.

  • In Columbus, Tegna's WBNS will air two games (4/6 & 4/7) on the main signal 10.1, while a third game (3/20) will air on MeTV subchannel 10.2. Nexstar's WCMH will air two games (3/8 & 3/29).
  • In Dayton, Nexstar's WBDT will air three games (3/8, 3/20 & 3/29). CMG's WHIO will air two games (4/6 & 4/7).
  • Nexstar's WTRF Wheeling and WYTV Youngstown will air all five games on their respective MyNet .2 subchannels.

It won't be "Bally Sports" after the baseball season ends.

I know wouldn't happen, but it would be hilarious if it became ESPN Bet Sports 😉 (I'm sure Barstool or Pointsbet is the next one to chase for naming rights, honestly).

It'll probably have something tying it Amazon. Prime Sports? Amazon Sports? etc. They're not investing all that money to be a silent investor.

A little late on learning this, but Gray struck a deal to air the WFAA Mavericks package in two of its Texas markets (one of which technically is a border market with Oklahoma):

* In Lubbock, KLCW and KMYL will split the games evenly between them (3/1, 3/13, 3/29, 4/5 and 4/10 on KLCW, and 3/11, 3/21, 4/4, 4/9 and 4/12 on KMYL).

* In the Sherman-Ada market, KXII will air most of the games on its MyNetworkTV subchannel 12.2, while the remaining two games (3/29 & 4/12) will air on its Fox sub on 12.3.

And per TVPassport, it looks like at least tonight's Cavs game will also air in Pittsburgh on WPKD channel 19 (aka KDKA+).

With this, it throws Bally Sports back into question.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40153860/loss-comcast-tv-carrier-devastating

Let it die.  Comcast customers will not miss the RSN fees on top of all of the other "fees" they have to pay.

Bally Sports could soon be renamed FanDuel Sports.

Not FanDuel's initial TV presence as there's already FanDuel TV (formerly TVG), a horse racing network interspersed with sports programming, particularly in the weekday morning hours.

It's a relief that it isn't Barstool at the very least.

That would be the quickest way to drive the network(s) into the ground.  Especially if the Barstool people are actually entrusted with games.

And TVG was acquired by Fox in the News Corp deal eons ago where they bought TV Guide.

CBS-owned independent KTXA would be a perfect fit.

Much like what I have suggested with MLB, the NHL is another great opportunity for Fox O&O's to make a multi-market deal for their "plus" stations (KDFI for the Stars, WFTC/Wild, KCOP/Kings, KZJO/Kraken, WDCA/Capitals, WPWR/Blackhawks, WWOR for the Rangers/Devils/Islanders).

The odds of a Capitals to broadcast deal are 0%, with Ted Leonsis/Monumental owning the former NBC Sports Washington in addition to the team.

You can cross the Kraken off that list...they already announced back in April that they're leaving Root Sports, and are moving their telecasts to KING/KONG (the majority of the games on the latter station).

As far as the metro NYC teams, so long as the MSG Networks control the TV rights for all three, the only way anyone of them air a game on over-the air TV (not involving ABC) are in one-off situations.  The Knicks have priority on the main MSG Network, and if the Rangers are playing at the time as a Knicks game, they get moved to MSG SportsNet; in the event that the Knicks, Rangers, Devils, and Islanders are all playing at the same time, the latter two get moved to the overflow "2" channels.

With the other teams you've mentioned...with the Kings, I could see them re-upping with KCAL for another season of selected games, while KCOP may have a better chance with the Ducks, although I doubt that would happen.  With the Blackhawks, the new sports network that they co-own that's set to launch in the fall, it was mentioned that it would include some sort of over-the-air component in addition to cable/satellite coverage, although no specifics were mentioned.  And with the Wild, with Bally Sports North being essentially co-owned with WUCW, which already aired Timberwolves and Minnesota United FC overflow games recently, as well as some Wild games back in 2022, as long as that RSN sticks around, I believe WUCW will continue in that "overflow" role.
