I do think the way they do news (a mix of local news, national news, weather, celebrity news, police pursuits, and fun banter) just works for the all day news format. It also helps that their news is properly funded. This isn't some broke Sinclair station producing 16 hours of news a day, they have the staff and resources to cover LA news properly. Yeah if you watch it all day long non stop it could get boring but you could say the same thing watching hours and hours of court shows or talk shows all day. They cover serious news when needed yet allow talent to have fun in a way that is unparalleled to any other station. Their talent is so beloved by viewers that they can basically do a whole hour of them having an unscripted conversation (Off The Clock) and it works. It's also worth pointing out that 15 years ago they only had a morning newscast and hour at 10:00pm. Daytime used to be full of Jerry Springer, Maury, Steve Wilkos, and other conflict talkers. Repeats of Family Guy aired in the evening. They slowly built up over the years starting with news at times when other stations had entertainment programming and then expanding to compete against the other newscasts head on.

Well with CW programming and limited syndies there practically an independent station so basically yeah they can fill those hours with station programming like news and in house shows like LA unscripted. Wont be surprised if the weekend become news all day either with CW not having a lot of sports programming.

Also, KTLA added a 4pm newscast on Sundays several months ago, and that was already part of an expansion of weekend news broadcasts that the station has implemented for quite some time now.  Local newscasts are cheap to produce, and while the ratings for KTLA's news shows are not publicly available (nor are they for other Los Angeles TV stations), I would imagine that they are more than decent enough to keep adding newscasts.

KTLA is basically NY 1 except all live with sprinkles of syndicated and network prime time programming. Simply excessive.

And again, the crazy part is I don't think they are doing panel discussions/interviews (outside of the AM) like CNN to fill airtime. Its all vo/sots and packages.

What's also excessive is how the Los Angeles market collectively has newscasts filled between the hours of 4am and 11:35pm weekdays (with the exceptions for time off in the 1pm hour for "Off the Clock," which is technically produced by the KTLA news department as well as 7:30pm).

Just watched the first few minutes of the new KTLA 7pm newscast this evening.  It's co-anchored by Micah Olhman and Cher Calvin on the same side of the studio where the 4pm show is done is well.  Seems like a standard 30-minute newscast to me.

After suffering a mild stroke over Memorial Day weekend, KTLAs legendary morning weatherman Mark Kriski returns tomorrow morning. He will ease into his duties….only doing 7-9am. He usually does 7-11am. This is a welcome return since Mark had his stroke shortly after Sam Rubin’s passing.

I was thinking about this, in regards to KCAL+, but to me in my opinion, it should have been KTLA that created a new locally-programmed subchannel instead.  They're sitting on syndicated programming that's either relegated to late nights (thanks to the increasing news expansion) or no longer seen locally (Steve Wilkos and Kamano) that could fill a daytime/early evening schedule.  Hell, they could even poach a few classic shows from Antenna and Rewind to fill-in some other parts of the schedule (and grab Young Sheldon from KNBC's Cozi TV channel), and air encores of their locally-produced shows--Frank Buckley Interviews, L.A. Unscripted, Jessica Holmes Cooking, and Off the Clock.

It'll certainly be a better lineup of shows that what KCAL+ is currently showing, at least to me.

Is Derrin Horton still with KTLA?  I have not seen him on air lately and his bio is gone from the station's website.

Good question...I haven't seen anything recent from his socials, other than birthday wishes to him back in late September.  Maybe right now he's just focusing more on his voiceover work.

No. He's gone. He was notably missing from Dodgers coverage in October. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02htdbmH7NPmtVRiwkuFFjzBUbmYXPqm5xx5PXUhGf6F3vuMQiM1ZMGVdYsxBpPF51l&id=100083644452651&mibextid=cr9u03

Hey, a friend of mine who watches the KTLA news broadcasts online is wondering why they have reporters doing live shots outside an undisclosed location in Hollywood. Isn't the undisclosed location an upper portion outside at their studios at Sunset Bronson (or Old WB as it's referred to on Wikipedia)? Makes perfect sense if you ask me.

They've been doing it for years.

If I understand what you’re asking correctly, this is similar to what a number of networks do. ABC in particular often has general reporters stand opposite sides of the street from their studios on 66th St and notes the location as simply “New York, NY”.

Yes, it is done from a picturesque section in the KTLA parking structure that faces DTLA. They will use this location if the flashcam in the newsroom and their NewsCenter are being used. Reporters tag out with "reporting live in Hollywood...." but the keen viewer knows it is in their parking lot.

Yesterday on Christmas Eve, I was taking a little break from the news cycle but I did see a little bit of Omar Lewis doing double duty at 11am and 10pm but I'm not making a big deal out of it because it is the holidays and the main anchors deserve time off because of the holiday season. Merry Christmas everyone.

KTLA has probably lost a lot of ad revenue over the last 3 days from non-stop fire coverage and because of that, they have been airing so much commercial breaks during the 1:30-2pm half hour and only like 15-30 seconds or 1 minute of news in between those breaks.
