He needs no introduction, but in case one is required, former longtime KTRK anchor Dave Ward has died. He was 86 but spent 50 years as Houston's anchorman.

What a loss this is, he’s a titan in Texas broadcasting. Generations of Texas families, mine included, have heard the news from Dave Ward over his 50 year broadcasting history at channel 13. The station has been a shell of its former self since he stepped down.

Former NHC spokesman and TV meteorologist Dennis Feltgen had some very nice words for Dr. Frank on Facebook. The Tampa stations did many interviews with him.

Wow. Umm... this one hits home, since I lived in Gainesville for almost three years.

 

Former WCJB-TV 20 Chief Meteorologist Bill Quinlan has passed away after suffering from an unexpected heart attack. He was only 64.

 

Spent 27 years there before leaving in late 2024, but was the chief at WCJB during my time living there so its sad to hear this now.

It was Dr. Frank and Nash Roberts who had me tuned in to hurricanes growing up. I know those two Air Force vets are chatting up a storm in heaven.

Multiple Market Main Anchor Wes Sarginson passed away yesterday February 4th at the age of 82. Sarginson anchored in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Washington DC (twice), Tampa, and Atlanta again before retiring in 2007. This comes from someone’s private FB page.

Another death from Florida. Longtime Jacksonville sports anchor Matt Cooney has passed away. Cooney was main sports anchor at WTLV in the 70s and 80s before moving over to WJXT for a few years to assist Sam Kouvaris. Cooney then worked for the PGA. He was 85 years old. There isn’t a whole lot of footage online from WTLV prior to 1984 aside from one 1972 newscast and a few news open clips from when the station gained ABC in 1980.

Larry Herbst known on air as Randy Scott (no relation to the current Randy Scott at ESPN) passed away January 26, 2026 in Chesterfield, Virginia at age 84. Scott was the Sports Director at WXEX in Richmond 1974-1977, WFLA in Tampa from 1977-1981 and then he was the Sports Director at WTOG in St. Petersburg when the station launched their 10:00 newscasts from 1982-1986. During his time at WTOG he hosted the Buccaneers coaches show with John McKay and then Leeman Bennett.
