Larry Herbst known on air as Randy Scott (no relation to the current Randy Scott at ESPN) passed away January 26, 2026 in Chesterfield, Virginia at age 84. Scott was the Sports Director at WXEX in Richmond 1974-1977, WFLA in Tampa from 1977-1981 and then he was the Sports Director at WTOG in St. Petersburg when the station launched their 10:00 newscasts from 1982-1986. During his time at WTOG he hosted the Buccaneers coaches show with John McKay and then Leeman Bennett.

I never realized Randy Scott was a stage name/pseudonym; I thought that was his real name (never knew he was really Larry Herbst).

This one kinda hurts because I have chatted with him off and on over the last 5 years or so. Steve Kiggins, formerly of KCPQ Fox 13 and most recently of KBTC's Northwest Now, passed away on Thursday at age 47. He had a very long career around the country - starting as an intern at KOMO before going from Reno to Greensboro to Atlanta and finally Seattle. He was a fantastic photojournalist and reporter who did so much good for every station he worked with. He had an impressive personality and was always fun-loving and proud of his work. Rest in power, Steve. https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/steve-kiggins-dies

On Wednesday, we lost longtime KXTV anchor Dick Cable, another giant in the world of Sacramento broadcasting.

Nearly three decades with the station, and the station spoke with another longtimer, now in retirement, Jennifer Smith, as she remembers Cable. The newsroom is named after him, The Dick Cable Newsroom.

He was 89.

Another Jacksonville giant is gone.

Former longtime WJXT anchor and reporter Rob Sweeting has passed away. He spent 30 years with the station (1985-2015), the longest stop of his career.

He was 73.

Ugh. This one hurts if you live in the Capital Region.

Legendary WTEN and WNYT anchor and reporter John McLoughlin has passed away. He was 83.

He was a general and political reporter for WNYT in his last few years of his career but he's more remembered for his decades on air at WTEN, not just as a reporter but also as an anchor at 5:00pm, mainly alongside ex-NYC anchor Tracy Egan.

If you subscribe to Junkie's Tape Bin on YT, you'll see a lot of WTEN newscasts featuring him anchoring and reporting plus interviewing newsmakers on The Hot Seat. He will be gravely missed.

Statement from Chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide Mark Thompson on the death of Ted Turner

He needs no explanation. TBS was America's #1 cable network because of Mr. Turner. TNT was home to thousands of classic movies and WCW, because of Mr. Turner. Larry King became a nightly staple in millions of homes...because of Turner.

Not to mention CNN Headline News, Cartoon Network, Turner Classic Movies, and more. All of these networks were staples of American life in one demographic or another. Dexter's Laboratory premiered on Cartoon Network to critical acclaim, not to mention the late Christine Cavanaugh was perfect for voicing Dexter. Toonami, Ed, Edd and Eddy, PowerPuff Girls, Adventure Time ALL came around because Ted decided to launch this network.

He leaves behind a legacy around the world. He will be remembered for generations to come. RIP and welcome to Heaven, Ted.

I'll say this...

  • We learned what a SuperStation is all about (WTCG/WTBS/WPCH) because of Turner.
  • I got access to 24-hour domestic (CNN), Spanish (CNN en Español), and international (CNN International) news because of Turner.
  • I got access to great general programming plus Braves baseball games (TBS) through Turner.
  • I got access to Inside the NBA (when it was around), and great sports telecasts (TNT) because of Turner.
  • One of my favorite cable news networks to have ever existed (CNN Headline News) is because of Turner.
  • Some of my favorite cartoons from my childhood (Cartoon Network) are because of Turner.
  • The best classic cartoons of all time (Boomerang) exist because of Turner.
  • IMO, the greatest classic movie network to have ever existed (Turner Classic Movies) because of Turner.

I mean... nothing more to say. Without Turner, the television that we know today would not exist. Today is a very sad day for sure. This one hurts badly.

He put Atlanta on the map to compete with New York and Washington for national news HQs.

And he saved a struggling Charlotte TV station to which it's now WCNC-TV https://www.wcnc.com/article/entertainment/ted-turner-charlotte-connection-to-cnn-empire-wcnc-charlotte-station-ownership/275-db32b78e-1837-42e5-a509-6418750d5165

Yep! WRET (for his initials, Robert Edward "Ted" Turner III), which later became WPCQ under Group W, and then WCNC under various owners before today's TEGNA (not Nexstar yet because of court challenges).

Speaking of Turner, KVOA got to interview former CNN anchor Lou Waters on Turner's legacy. Waters is happily retired, as you can tell, now living in Southern Arizona.

This one is really sad.

Cynthia spent nearly three decades at KSHB, and was one of the longest-serving employees there.

A true figure and legend of Kansas City and championing the city through thick and thin. She will be missed there and I hope other stations will recognize her.
