...for serving viewers in three different states.

...for having one major network affiliate in a separate state.

...for having two PBS stations in their respective states.

...for having three "duopolies", including two in one state.

...for its guarded, yet rich history.

...for its response to tropical cyclones.

What's the purpose of this thread?

What's the purpose of every thread?

I actually think this would be an interesting topic for discussion... it's better than those "list" threads ("WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE FEMALE BISEXUAL 30-TO-50-YEAR-OLD ANCHOR/REPORTERS IN THE MIDWEST?").

I'll come up with some for here later.

...when it's best station is a FOX O&O.

...for having all of its stations break into any sort of programming for wall to wall snow coverage when only 3 inches of snow have fallen.

...for a station using the same music and lead anchor since the 70s and having no intention of changing either.

(#5: SF-Oakland-San Jose)

- For serving 3 of the largest cities in the country - and those cities having a large racial diversity:

San Jose - 10th largest - (White (36%), Hispanic (30.2%), Other (33.8%))

San Francisco - 14th largest - (White (43.6%), Chinese (19.6%), Hispanic (14.1%), Other (22.7%))

Oakland - 44th largest - (Black (35.7%), White (23.5%), Hispanic (21.9%), Other (18.9%))

- For those cities being spread so far apart

(SF/Oakland are about 50 mi. from San Jose)

- For being the largest DMA w/o a Fox O&O

- For having almost all of our news stations producing good news products (even KRON is at least so-so)

- For having news options in more than just English & Spanish

- For being one of the most expensive DMAs to live in in the country ;)

Or the famous "What does your station's copyright say?"

Because each of its 3 network affiliates (WCBD, WCIV, WCSC) all have good newscasts.

That even a small tropical depression 2500 miles away can lead the news.

That many of its talent, especially sports anchors, have moved on to bigger markets, like Craig Birnbach, who moved to Portland, Steve Byrnes, Susan McGinnis, and many weather anchors, like Lorrie Jordan, Monica McNeal, and others.

In how all three stations have veteran anchor teams.

And, how the Fox affiliate (WTAT) beats all the 11pm newscasts, except for WCSC.

...Because our stations can find a way to drag the weather out so it takes up 1/2 of the newscast.

...Because every commercial station in the market has changed affiliations at least once.

...Because many of the main anchors have spent time at more than one station in the market.

...Because the Packers can lead the newscast, even if it isn't football season.

...And finally...

...Because we're DMA 69 ;)

San Diego DMA # 27

...When more than half of a station's experienced staff gets canned by management to try and save money (KGTV).

...When every station with news has at least one newcast with two female anchors.

...When 2 stations are cheap, and try to save money by cutting people and not updating their looks (XETV, KUSI).

...When every station hires rookie, inexperienced reporters that belong in market 150+.

...for having a network affiliate pre-empt weekend newscasts in favor of "The Insider", "Inside Edition", and paid programming.

...for once having "Mama's Family" as a popular late night alternative on two stations, often beating "The Tonight Show" (with Jay Leno and Johnny Carson).

...for having many former news reporters and anchors remain in public positions.

...for having a low powered station, which barely reaches half the area, affiliate with the former Warner Bros. Network (until 2001) and My Network TV.

...for having a sub-market that could've been its own DMA.

...for having two ABC affiliates (one of which is in the sub-market), neither of which is a satellite of the other.

...for having a second CBS affiliate (in the sub-market) for a little over a year.

...for having the first sister station of Miami's WSVN.

...for having two PBS stations that are sister stations owned by the same organization.

...because despite the fact that it covers ALL but 4 counties in Arizona, the Phoenix metro is the only location that gets news coverage (Phoenix first, the rest of Arizona if there's any time)

...because we have only one 9pm newscast (for being DMA 13)

...for having five english-language newscasts at 5pm & 10pm (KNXV, KPHO, KPNX, KSAZ, KTVK)

...for being able to scrap an entire Tuesday morning and afternoon programming and dedicating the time period to Mardi Gras coverage.

...for having a station kick CBS' morning show to the curb and have its own morning show kick Today and GMA's behind handily.

...in which each station does not have its own helicopter.

I like this! I figured I'd do one of my own...

...for having a station that claims they are the most watched station in the Nation.

...for having a station that makes frequent changes to their appearance and talent, and yet they still can't beat the most watched station in the Nation.

...because male fashion is now becoming a growing interest in some viewers.

...because an anchor team has been together for over 20 years, longer than any other anchor team television history.

...for having a station that prefers to start their leading story with Lindsay Lohan being arrested, rather than covering severe weather.

...when it appears everything is ran by monkeys. (For years, all the locals had solid products, but now they seem to be losing scripts and screwing up graphics on a regular basis on multiple channels)

...when one of the station's studios used to be a funeral home, which some staff believe is haunted

for having a station that has 80% of the viewers

for having a station where NBC is still number 1 in primetime

because the most respected news organization in the state shares a building with hooters (not kidding, when the wind blows the right way the studio smells like wings!)

for having a station that has 2 local stories, then the rest are national wire stories

because the CBS affiliate updated its L3's and OTS's to colors that clash with the rest of the graphics and set

for having a primetime newscast that gets zeros in the ratings

because the ABC affiliate has no live capabilities beyond their parking lot
