Providers have finally updated the schedule for TheGrio, which now might as well be called "Justice Central.tv.two" (I hate their naming scheme), as the daytime schedule is made up of those Sony sitcoms and The Cosby Show, the nighttime is all Allen court shows, and random episodes of sports filler Masters of the Game fills out the schedule to comply with the news requirements left in the BNC contracts.

Zap2it is still showing a This TV schedule on WHDH-DT2, but it might as well be something just to report anything but 'off-the-air' while Sunbeam tries to get new programming arranged.

I wonder what KCTV5 would be doing on their 5.3 subchannel since This TV is gone.

Allen Media seems to be circling the drain in a very bad way.  No wonder Tegna and others passed on their investment.

He had no business getting into the news business.  I feel sorry for all the stations under this division....

The irony is that it may work - in the other direction...mentioned on Speculatron.

Kind of mentioned before, but now CNBC has an article on Allen Media being tens of millions of dollars late in payments to NBC, ABC, and CBS.

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/08/16/byron-allen-draws-abc-cbs-and-nbc-ire-with-late-payments.html

If it gets bad enough, that gives the networks the right to void their agreement(s) and yank their affiliations because Allen would be in default of any particular agreement.

While it wasn't said why WBNX lost the CW in 2018, financial default by their owners (Winston Broadcast/Ernest Angley) may have been the impetus since their agreement with them was to last through 2021.

If this was to happen, it would be a great speculatron thread.  Not a lot of local options in their markets given the feelings the FCC has towards networks seeking subchannel space on another station.

I won't say what's going on lately as the info I'm getting is from a source that I can't mention here. However, I'm hearing of very big cuts at Allen once again that are leading to one network's possible last time covering a hurricane as we speak.

That bad? Are we talking the possible cessation of all live programming on said network?

Not gonna lie- as a kid I loved tuning into TWC for any type of severe weather coverage. Today, it's just too easy to channel surf just about any local station or market where the mets and reporters are just as, if not more, knowledgeable as TWC. Used NewsOn last night to flip between three different markets (WESH, WFTS, WINK) like they were my locals.

I will say this... its NOT the regular TWC.

FTVLive already reported that TWC En Español had let go several employees, including an executive. So, it sounds like TWC’s second attempt to reach Hispanic audiences (after the Latin American network that folded under Landmark) could be getting the axe.

19 people at Fox affiliate KADN in Lafayette, Louisiana lost their jobs in Allen Media's layoffs.  The weekday morning and noon newscasts are also cancelled.

While the article quotes one of the laid-off anchors that the morning show was cancelled, it later stated that it’s being cut by 90 minutes (with KADN and KLAF only simulcasting the first half-hour, and KADN carrying the bulk of the show), and will switch to a single-anchor format with a replacement meteorologist. Only the noon newscast on KLAF is fully gone.

I hate to say this, but there are certain markets that should have never filled themselves out with missing network affiliates.

They were better off having the de-facto affiliates fill in the gaps with their full compliment of coverage, even if it was more distant.

Some of these startup affiliates pushed off stations viewers had watched for decades, and were clearly inferior to what they replaced.

Many of these stations were startups by companies like Allen. KLAF was one of those stations, pushing off KPLC.

And given the recent storms and where they hit, those markets fit that bill perfectly.

KLAF wasn’t a startup; it had previously been affiliated with UPN and MyNetworkTV, before Nexstar (prior to selling KADN/KLAF to Bayou City, DeJuan McCoy’s original broadcasting venture that cashed out to Allen, amid the Media General purchase) switched it to NBC, and built the joint news department with KADN.

The “de facto affiliate” model wasn’t viable long-term, anyhow. It primarily relied upon cable and satellite coverage to be sustainable; The WB 100+ started the shift toward creating local affiliates for networks to fill gaps in market coverage that the Big Three and Fox (the latter of which it kinda pioneered through the Foxnet cable network) expanded upon, using low-power stations and digital subchannels for that purpose. Even in the analog, pre-cable era, issues with rimshot signal coverage of the supplementary affiliates made it difficult for some viewers to watch network shows from adjacent-market affiliates.

KLAF actually switched to NBC when it was owned by Nexstar before sale to DeJuan McCoy

Allen is joining the newscast consolidation movement.  The first victims are WFFT in Fort Wayne, which will now get their news out of WLFI Lafayette.

https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2024/11/25/allen-media-to-hub-news-in-indiana

And a "slightly" bright spot in this.  WAAY in Huntsville will be producing a primetime newscast for WCOV in Montgomery with two reporters based there.

https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2024/11/26/allen-media-merges-newsrooms

Seeing as this is another voice in the market, it's a little win.  But the market may be better served by the current WAKA newscast that they've put on for the last 15 or so years, and before that, WSFA.

This may now shift WAKA's efforts over to their WBMM CW station to compete against Allen at 9pm.

A source I know says other Allen stations in Indiana are talking about doing the same thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if WLFI is one of them.  Lafayette is an "in-between" market between South Bend and Indy.

The other Allen stations in Indiana are in Terre Haute and Evansville.  Of those, WTHI is the more-established one and it may make sense for them to do news for Evansville while Lafayette does news for Fort Wayne.

Of course, the whole shebang could come out of Lafayette as well.
