Eight CBS Stations to Ditch CW and Go Independent This Fall

And.....seattle11.com, boston38.comflorida33.com and sacramento31.com.

I strongly doubt every station will go with these brandings. "KCAL" (& even "KCAL 9" ftm) is a stronger brand than a generic "Los Angeles 9" or "LA 9". Sad that "california9.com" was already taken.....

Interesting how they haven’t claimed texas21.com yet.

For that one TXA21 will more likely remain, if with a redesigned logo to meet this new city branding thing since they remained independent all through. Boston and Miami are the ones to look out for now (if they even remember they own WBFS).

Just out of curiosity, I looked up all of these URLs. At the moment, only boston38.com is currently active; it redirects to the Paramount Streaming division page on the Paramount Global website. The rest just send me to a page saying they're registered and protected.

The domains pittsburgh19.com and kdkaplus.com were recently purchased by CBS (6/20 and 7/28, respectively), and are currently pointed to a MarkMonitor parking page.

kpixplus.com was registered July 28 as well. Notably, wforplus and kywplus (among others) were not taken.

KBCW will be branded as KPIX+ and will launch an 8 and 9pm show. No word if they are adding a 10pm newscast.

Effectively succeeding KRON’s 8 and 9pm newscasts, when they sign on with The CW.

Interesting there’s no 10pm. I guess CBS is going to continue with Now News after all?

Or maybe they’ll just pull news from the 10pm hour entirely and pump in some rerun.

Looks like it’s all been confirmed that the CW is going to Ch 38 in Detroit.  An official announcement should be made very soon.

As for WKBD, I think they are indeed addling a 8 pm newscast as well.  We should find out soon.

I got money on WPKD (aka KDKA+) airing Talk Pittsburgh at 8, Nightly Sports Call at 9, and expanding the 10pm news to an hour.

That's very possible. They already re-air Talk Pittsburgh on their CBS News Pittsburgh stream at 9pm, so it would only make sense to have an OTA encore of the show. And moving the Nightly Sports Call to 9pm and making it a full hour also makes sense.

Ball is in KDKA/WPKD’s court since they are neck-and-neck with WPGH at 10pm in spite of going independent.

Sinclair slacking off here in Pittsburgh with WPGH is about to hit them once again.  KDKA has handily won the race with their 10pm show on WPCW and Sinclair has no inkling to compete at a local level in one off their larger and older markets.

Any word on if CBS will make a play for local sports rights for their newly independent stations?

It's certainly been theorized by a few outlets, given the Diamond Sports bankruptcy. I think their best bet for sports rights at the moment would be Pittsburgh. With Warner Bros. Discovery closing shop on their RSNs, the Pirates and Penguins need a new home. While it's been theorized that, since the Penguins are owned by the same guys as the Red Sox, they might move it to NESN, one of the few RSNs still doing reasonably well, but with several other teams going OTA, anything can happen.

Something notable from CBS’ press release about 48 Hours entering syndication next month:

Quote

“48 HOURS is a great fit for our CBS-owned stations,” said John Budkins, senior vice president of programming for CBS Stations. “We look forward to showcasing the program in primetime in 10 of our markets, including on seven of the eight stations where we will be transitioning from The CW to independent status next month.”

Also, that means three out of four of the existing indies (KTXA, WBFS, WSBK and WLNY) will be airing it in primetime as well. Not KCAL, for obvious reasons.

Not to be pedantic, but 11pm (after SportsCentral) or 7pm (before the news block) could be considered “prime time”.

Well isn't 7pm (6pm C/M) is called "Primetime Access"? I don't see that much difference.
