WABC-TV Wins Yet Again...

They may have the ugliest graphics in the world, or they may have the most phenomenal graphics, but whatever it is, WABC-TV still wins and continues to be the Number #1 Station In The Nation (don't mean to rub it in, lol), of course this is nothing new to most of us. Graphics, on air presentation or whatever don't mean a thing to the common New Yorker. It is the quality of the product that impresses the majority of viewers. And the reason why they hold the title of being number one in the nation is obviously because of the metropolitan area it serves, which is the largest in the nation itself, so that helps out quite a bit... Here in New York, Channel 7 is the talk of the town.

"Eyewitness News" Continues to Win Every News Race (5am, 6am, 12pm, 5pm,

6pm and 11pm) by a Wide Margin

NEW YORK, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- WABC-TV is New York's most watched

broadcast station in both Households and Adults 25-54 for the 42nd

consecutive ratings survey period, delivering a 3.6 rating/10 share in DMA

Households, Monday-Sunday Sign-On to Sign-Off in Nielsen's May 2008 sweep,

providing WABC-TV with a 50% advantage over its nearest competitor. With

each rating point representing 73,920 Tri-State area TV households, Channel

7 continues to attract a larger audience than any other television station

in the country.

WABC-TV leads the market in news broadcasts throughout the entire day,

beginning with the early morning news race. At 5am, WABC-TV's "Eyewitness

News This Morning" with Lori Stokes, Ken Rosato and Bill Evans boasts a DMA

Household rating that is more than any two competitors combined. At 6am,

WABC-TV tops its closest competitor (WNBC-TV) by 23% in DMA Households.

"Eyewitness News This Morning" is equally dominant among Adults 25-54,

where both its 5am and 6am editions deliver more viewers than any two

competitors combined.

At Noon, "Eyewitness News" with Lori Stokes, Ken Rosato and Bill Evans

is more than double its competition on WCBS-TV in DMA Households, and draws

more than twice as many Women 25-54 viewers.

WABC-TV's "Eyewitness News at 5pm" with Diana Williams, Sade Baderinwa

and Lee Goldberg, outdelivers 2nd-place WCBS-TV by 60% in DMA Households.

WABC-TV's rating among Adults 25-54 is higher than the combined deliveries

of WCBS-TV's "CBS2 News at 5," WNYW-TV's "Fox News at 5" and WNBC-TV's

"NewsChannel 4 at 5."

"Eyewitness News" maintains its domination at 6pm with the Mon-Fri

"Eyewitness News at 6pm" with Bill Ritter, Liz Cho, Lee Goldberg and Scott

Clark. WABC-TV has more than double the DMA Household rating of its closest

competitor, "CBS2 News at 6pm." Among Adults 25-54, WABC-TV delivers a

higher rating than the combined 6pm newscast deliveries of WCBS-TV, WNBC-TV

and WNYW-TV. May 2008 marks the 53rd consecutive ratings survey period that

WABC-TV has finished an outright #1 in DMA Households among local M-F 6pm

newscasts.

The Mon-Fri "Eyewitness News at 11pm" featuring Bill Ritter, Liz Cho,

Lee Goldberg and Scott Clark completes the overall weekday victory for

WABC-TV's "Eyewitness News" franchise. WABC-TV wins the 11pm Late News race

in DMA Households, topping both WCBS-TV & WNBC-TV by 25%. WABC-TV is also

#1 among Adults 25-54, topping WNYW-TV by 12%.

On weekend mornings, "Eyewitness News" with Michelle Charlesworth, Phil

Lipof, Jeff Smith and Jessica Taff delivers the key Adult 25-54 demographic

better than any of its competitors. On Saturday and Sunday mornings,

WABC-TV's newscasts collectively average a 1.1 rating among Adults 25-54,

which is 57% greater than WNBC-TV's newscasts and 175% more than WCBS-TV's

local newscasts.

At 11pm on Saturday and Sunday nights, "Eyewitness News at 11pm,"

featuring Joe Torres, Sandra Bookman, Heidi Jones and Marvell Scott,

continues the dominance that WABC-TV's "Eyewitness News" demonstrates on

weekdays. WABC-TV outdelivers 2nd-place WNBC-TV by 14% in DMA Households

and by 53% among Adults 25-54 on weekend nights.

On Mon-Fri 6:30-7pm, "ABC's World News" with Charles Gibson holds a

commanding lead over its network news competitors, with a DMA Household

rating that is more than the combined deliveries of WNBC-TV's "NBC Nightly

News" and WCBS-TV's "CBS Evening News."

In Primetime, WABC-TV ranks #1 in DMA Households and Adults 25-54.

Among Adults 25-54, WABC-TV boasts five of the top ten programs in the

market in the May 2008 sweep.

In the daytime hours, "Live with Regis and Kelly" joins WABC-TV's

syndicated programs "Rachael Ray", "Millionaire", "Oprah", "Jeopardy" and

"Wheel of Fortune" in continuing to be the #1 programs in their respective

time periods in Households and most key demographics, including Adults and

Women 25-54.

And if you include Canada (especially the big markets like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver), WABC is also the #1 station in NORTH AMERICA!!!

Meanwhile, as far as the entertainment news shows at 7:30 are concerned...it's nice to see ET continue to whup Access Hollywood's ass 3.2 to 1.9. As for primetime? I was hoping American Idol-fueled WNYW would hold off WCBS for second (or at least tie with them).

  • 4 weeks later...

I am not surprised one bit when I first read these numbers. Although, I was pleasantly surprised to see that WNBC's numbers dropped that low. If they want to get their numbers back up, I suggest that they bring back the noon newscast and extend the 5pm show to a full hour. I guess all those changes that WCBS made actually worked. But, it may be a different story now that Jim Rosenfield is gone. Let's wait and see.

I agree they should put Live at Five back to an hour like it was and put Extra back at 7pm. One problem is WNBC's syndicated shows are all low rated and don't give them much of a lead in to their newscasts. They should also do an hourlong 11am newscast like other NBC O&Os do.

I also think they should just go by "News 4" like WRC does in Washington D.C.

Yeah WNBC needs to do something better with their 11am-1pm time slots.

11:00 AM Paid Programming

11:30 AM Merv Griffin's Crosswords

12:00 PM OpenHouse NYC

12:30 PM Extra

I believe sometimes infomercials also run at 12pm.

WNBC could easily eliminate the paid programming at 11am. They could put an 11am newscast in its place and not only go to battle with WNYW, but get the jump on WABC and WCBS. They could also lose OpenHouse NYC and bring back the noon newscast.

No they shouldn't. WNBC wanted the 4 New York back and they did it. No need to be like WRC.

They kind of already go by News 4. Isn't their newscast called News 4 News York at # ? I personally prefer NBC 4 News at # . As far as the lineup, I think this is how it should go:

11am: Judge Joe Brown

12noon: Noon newscast

12:30pm: Deal or No Deal (syndicated version)

1pm: Days of Our Lives

2pm: Martha

3pm: The Bonnie Hunt Show

4pm: Ellen

5pm: News (Live at Five)

6pm: News

6:30: NBC Nightly News

7pm: Extra

7:30: Access Hollywood

NBC 4 News? are you kidding me? The best thing about WNBC is that they don't have to call themselves like the others O&O's. It would be stupid. Just like KNBC dropping Channel 4 News to NBC 4 News.

Maybe it's just me, but why would you want to ditch New York Nightly News in favor of one hour of tabloid trash? I think the 7pm newscast has held its own in the ratings. Not a flop like some people suggested it would be when it first aired.

In Chicago, its rather boring with CBS 2 News, NBC 5 News, ABC 7 News, and Fox News Chicago...they all sound the same. I wish ABC 7 still went by Eyewitness News at least that sounded different.

None of the NBC 4's have ever gone by NBC 4 News, but all the others O&Os seem to - NBC 5 News in Chicago and Dallas, NBC 11 News in San Francisco, NBC 7/39 News in San Diego, NBC 10 News in Philadelphia.

I was glad that WNBC went back to News 4 New York. I NEVER liked NewsChannel 4.

Why do I always hear that Ellen is a syndication hit but yet it never is in the top 20 of syndication ratings? The same goes for Rachael Ray.

You're right, it's isn't a top 20 show when compared with other Syndication strongholds (Oprah, Jeopardy, Wheel, Phil, etc).

But her show does very well in certain demos and has a number of Emmy wins and nominations.

Not to mention, she's usually counterprogrammed againts Dr. Phil and/or Oprah. Many feel if/when Oprah retires that Ellen could elevate to the top women's hosted daytime talk show.
