Network 10 Australia is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its news operations, and they recently posted this compilation of clips (mostly from Sydney and Melbourne) to commemorate it, from old news opens to behind the scenes footage to promos (including another of TEN-10’s Eyewitness News promos from Collier Concepts!):

WTVX NEWS, The final Newscast August 4, 1989

Interesting how the other three West Palm Beach stations bought commercial time to advertise for their newscasts. The other stations primarily focused their news coverage on Palm Beach County and even Broward County stories, hence why WTVX lost their CBS affiliation to WPEC earlier that year in the big NBC/WTVJ triggered affiliate swap. WTVX was the only true station that covered the counties north of PBC.

The production and talent on sub 100 market newscasts seems so much better back in the day compared to today.

CBS News is releasing higher quality archival footage of historic events relevant to today's news stories.

Gosh, look at Steve Pool's hair!!! His hair length went down over time but he looked the same from that point until he died last year.

I am now living in Idaho. 60 miles north of Boise, to be exact. I brought 75% of my collection over (hundreds to convert), the rest is still in Yakima to be picked up early next year. Tons of new clips I've digitized:

KIMA News at 6, 1/12/1998

The late and FOREVER great Hal Fishman on this classic KTLA snippet from July 1983

Another KIMA 6PM newscast, 1/16/1998, but only the A-segment this time

KATU snippets from Feb-Mar 1994. Taper recorded Heaven & Hell: North and South Book III and left parts of the 11pm news each night. One has the arrival of Tonya Harding back home.

KAPP 1/15/1998, 11PM with Renee McCullough

In this video originally posted by @SoFloTVClassics

notice how Bryant Gumbel speaks for almost the entire introductory portion of the program. Couric doesnt speak until 11 minutes in. I noticed the same when Deborah Norville was anchoring with Bryant during Gulf War coverage.

According to Couric's book, Bryant had it in his contract to open the show and toss to Willard. Eventually, NBC News President Andy Lack wanted Katie and Bryant to be equal partners so Bryant refused and left.

Gumbel is an undeniable talent and my favorite host of the program, but his type A personality clouds his image. At least in his Sunday Morning interview with Jane Pauley he says he's mellowed with age.
