This switch actually ended up having a domino effect all the way in Milwaukee. Storer was so steamed at ABC for disaffiliating with KCST; that they ended up pulling ABC away from WITI.

I didn't know that, were other storer affiliates also involved in this "domino effect"?

No. Just those two. This was also because ABC was going to the ratings top and NBC (then on KGTV) was falling to the bottom.
