  1. You're right. History will show WPIX was so much better under Tribune. PIX never looked better than when they were broadcasting their 10PM from this messy corner of the newsroom. That classic late 2010 set and graphics package from when Bill Carey blew up the 10pm news. Who can forget the giant green "iPad graphics", Mr. G's weather closet, and all the great commentary and round table discussions with Lionel and Larry Mendte. Hard-hitting news like this, And of course the seemingly daily "investigation" into the MTA. We're lucky to not have any good videos of the first weeks of this disaster. Even two years later, it was still a giant mess. About the only thing Scripps could possibly do to the station that Tribune didn't already try is to burn the place down for the insurance money, though with all those cheap extension cords in the lighting grid, it sure looks like they might have been trying.

  2. We crap on GMA a lot, but it's cool to look back on 20 years in Times Square, through the eyes of the show's heart and soul. And from that very first morning...

  3. Uncle Perry also said that if someone was willing to give him an offer he wouldn't refuse, he would sell WGN Radio and WGN America in a hot second, since it's a non-core asset for him. That's why he kept Compton in to run those assets. So if it does get sold, Sook wouldn't have to deal with him after that. I strongly don't think he'll keep WGNA & 720 in long haul. I also don't think he'll keep ownership of the diginets (Antenna TV & This TV) long-term either. He has long said that he's not interested in anything national. He's only for local. And despite some stations dropping the channel (or are in the process of doing so), I wish Weigel would repurchase This TV. In regards to airing a fraction of local games over-the-air, I wouldn't say Sook can't ink a deal. And I know it'll have a drawback for some folks who don't have cable and rely on watching the games OTA. But I don't think that would be enough to bring back some games to regular TV. And I believe we have pretty strong cable rate in this market. You know, strange things have happen. But I'm with most of you. After next week, I don't think we'll see another local game OTA for the forseeable future.

  4. Holy heck, that's cool. (Don't mind me ninja editing in the correct year — 1970 is much more fascinating and much rarer!)

  5. As much as I'd like that to be the case, I'm not optimistic. I don't see NBC (Sox/Bulls/Blackhawks) or Sinclair (Cubs) blinking on their "exclusive home" claims, at least for the 2020 season. Just look at how stubborn SportsNet LA has been after all.

  6. Tribune was a Chicago based company and always favored its Chicago based properties. I have been around for a while, WGN were doing in studio and remote broadcasts in color years before WPIX did, WGN became a superstation way before WPIX did. WGN eventually went to their own separate broadcast facility which gave WGN the space to produce programming while WPIX has a small studio that is in an office building for the last 71 years. WPIX was always a step child and Tribune has always done things cheaply.

  7. Of the choices of Sinclair, Nexstar, Tegna and Scripps - they actually ended up with the better owner of those 4. Tegna is ruining all their stations (WXIA, KSDK, among more). Nexstar, like Sinclair only knows to cut, cut, cut. Hopefully there is no movement on changing ownership rules considering the obsolete UHF discount was restored, which allowed this deal and Nexstar does not take over.

  8. Say what? Is that why they got rid of his voiceovers?!? It all makes sense now!!! Anyway, Rest In Peace, Ed, you’ve earned it.

  9. Courtesy of the Internet Archive, here’s some news from January 21-22, 1981. The Today Show, GMA, Nightline, and even a bit of local news are included here. https://archive.org/details/BAVC1004575_News12181_prores

  10. Some of you are haters. I don't think "Go" is such a bad name as it is being used alongside "3 News." It's different and it doesn't sound dated like calling it Eyewitness Action News or something like that. The way you guys were talking, I thought they were going to call it simply "Go," which is a little more awkward. I don't mind the name Go, but I don't think it conveys that it is a newscast. (It sounds like another "Extra" wannabe.) But "3 News: Go" is just fine depending on how they use it during the program.

  11. While that statement may be true however the way I look at it, all of the stuff going on at WBNS (including what happened today with Mike Davis) is starting to catch up to 10TV. Don't be surprised if WSYX overtakes 10TV's ratings spot in additional time slots moving forward.

  12. Bet Sinclair wish they thought of it first.
