The discussion about channel numbers is missing the entire premise of CBS News Detroit. Somebody please show me how to tune my phone or web browser to Channel 62... This is an operation built on a "streaming first" mentality. The fact that it airs OTA is just a bonus. CBS appears to be, by and large, moving towards "streaming first". This is exactly how I've publicly predicted TV will move over the coming years. Channel numbers are an outdated concept in a world where more and more people are watching OTT where those precious numbers mean nothing. Traditional TV viewers are not bumbling morons and will figure out where to watch. Millions of senior citizens have figured out where to watch Fox News without it branding with channel numbers.7 points

Getting "canceled," even though they are literally viewable for free online. Meanwhile, they plan on getting rid of that in the next few months and stick to cable. Guess they'll be "canceled" again by then....caused by themselves.4 points

KCBS-TV hasn’t been relevant since Bill Applegate made it an über-tabloid schlockfest in the early 1990s. “CBS 2” only serves to remind of how they’ve been trapped in mediocrity ever since. Just because a station “revolutionized local news” — and the term is fairly subjective and varies wildly on a per market basis — doesn’t mean that branding should be trapped in amber and prevented from evolving.4 points

I am currently watching the local over-the-air feed of KCAL, and the "KCAL News Los Angeles" on-air bug still remains on screen.4 points

When Nexstar et al. pulls their channels, no one bats an eye. When an endless conjecture channel gets pulled, it’s the worst affront to democracy and deserves congressional hearings. Puh-lease. If they really were silencing voices, they would’ve blocked AT&T internet customers from accessing Newsmax’s website. Outrage for the sake of outrage3 points

Reviving this topic from the dead because DirecTV has officially dropped Newsmax as of yesterday. It did so because of a dispute over carrier fees. Naturally, Newsmax went and did the same thing as OAN when Verizon dropped them, calling it an act of political censorship and bias, never mind that DirecTV included in their statement that they wanted to "continue to offer the network." Oh, and Newsmax said they're getting "cancelled." Yeah. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/26/media/directv-drops-newsmax/index.html3 points

Channel numbers only really matter to legacy brands, where the number transcends the dial and is the cornerstone of the identity (certain stations with a certain, stylized 7 come to mind). Call letters CAN fall into the same group. CBS Detroit and too many other CBS O&O's have little-to-no such legacy, unless you count decades of falling in 3rd place...or 4th...or 5th.3 points

Yeah they ended the distance between anchors sometime last year but I have yet to see weather, traffic or sports anchors join them at the desk since before the pandemic. Very good to see!2 points

Yeah, it makes sense to replace "KCAL News Los Angeles" with the "CBS News Los Angeles" bug over the local "KCAL News Los Angeles" bug, which is still seen on channel 9, so the streams are more identifying and consistent to CBS Los Angeles audiences online.2 points

Your snarky attitude is duly noted. I’ll keep it in mind from now on.2 points

if we can keep it real, channel 2 hasn't been relevant in Los Angeles since April 1984. That was when KNXT became KCBS. The station that "revolutionized" local news was the former KNXT. I don't think KCBS has ever revolutionized anything in LA.2 points
-
Or even in the case of WCCO-TV, KDKA-TV and WBZ-TV, the mere fact that they have to share their call letters with unrelated radio stations. For KDKA-TV, it’s already shown to be a liability.2 points

Oh boy. I'm already imagining what some people are gonna think. But it's nice that they're finally promoting the CBS News local brand a little...through a simple bug change.2 points

No offense but the complains, if you can call them that,, are just petty. Don’t care about the news stand. Just want great news and so far, WWJ is doing a great job. Delivery, graphics, and overall look are all top notch.2 points

Since they added WDJT to my cable system, it's been just either '9' or '605' in the Roledex of my mind so I knew where to tune, and now it's just 'CBS 58' because that's what they've been every day since December 1994 and never changed the branding. Their first priority was to get established, then build a news division; on that front they've been very successful and now you nearly forget that CBS bounced around 6, 12 and 18 for so many decades, and they've got a good syndicated schedule. Meanwhile, WWJ has just...kinda existed. They just pass through CBS-owned content in syndication and outside of a few Lions games here and there and watching CBS, there's really been nothing to keep you there because 2, 4 and 7 are always there in their niches. Same when they purchased WKBD and made it just another bland UPN/CW station. And it's either 62 CBS, CBS Detroit, CBS, WWJ, CBS 62...never any consistent branding. And it didn't help that CBSNS had old guard management at the Westinghouse stations that wasn't changing a thing any time soon, or dysfunctional idiots with battling egos who bought stations to get into a golf club, and in Detroit, just never really tried. Still ended up a better result than getting WADL as an affiliate, though; that entire station is a headache and a half as it is now. Imagine having to fight them every few years on affiliation terms.1 point

While you may say the CBS2 in the box branding looks awful, that's the way it will eventually be for the remaining O&Os. To me it looks good on KCAL and KPIX.1 point

The only reason Black News Channel failed is because of one simple thing, they expanded to fast. And low viewership. They just couldn't support all those shows, Still alive today have they started slow.1 point

And because it worked so well for OAN last time... Newsmax is urging people to "join the fight." This is from Newsmax's website: The title in question? "They're Coming for NEWSMAX, Are You Next?" The writer of this article even went as far as to include the First Amendment, word-for-word. I kid you not. I wish I could say "this is drama for the sake of it," but I'm going to be nice here. No one's coming for anyone. It involves carriage fees. DirecTV wanted to continue carrying Newsmax, something that appears to be lost to the fine folks there. Now that they've been displaced on DirecTV in favor of The First (another right-wing channel)...1 point

Plus when you have 2,3,4 and 7 as your big 4 just in a short turn... it works out for the viewer and CBS as well. It get rid of your 62 problem and also solves a major issue CBS has in that market in Detroit: Visibility of your product. It's literally the Boston NBC 10 situation but in a situation where it makes perfect sense for them to do it in this case and it is a gain for everyone.1 point

Like I said, it's real estate. Mcdonald's, Wendy's and Burger King all tend to be close to each other. If Hardee's is a couple of streets away, it falls off the map. You don't think about it. Same with the FM dial. Everything that's worth listening to around here is under 99.9. I don't even know what stations are on 100.1 and above for the most part. I simply don't get to that part of town. Also, just look around the country. Stations with the high UHF Channel numbers beating stations with VHF Channel numbers is still more the exception and not the rule. And if dial position doesn't mean anything, why do media companies still fight with cable companies to get lower channel numbers? Yes, people stream. But the thing about streaming is that you can't really flip through channels a lot. You're basically stuck with whatever you're watching. There's still value in a low channel number both from the standpoint of real estate, and simply from a marketing and image standpoint that you're not one of those UHF stations in the nosebleed section of the dial where all the crappy channels are.1 point

The Bally name certainly has the reverse Midas touch. It seems like everything with Bally attached to it ends up going bankrupt. I don't really care about this issue at all. I don't care that sports channels won't be around to gouge cable customers. I don't care that teams will get stiffed of their rights fees. They all deserve each other.1 point

Even if it is just that, I highly doubt that you’ll see a branding disparity between OTA and streaming last for long. For one, February sweeps is forthcoming. No better time for the CBS Los Angeles name to be gradually phased in with the KCAL name so OTA viewers can connect the two brands.1 point

And KDOC is no more, having been sold last summer to Tri-State Christian Television. The downfall of KCOP, WWOR-TV and others is all Fox's fault. Maybe it would have been inevitable, but I truly think the former Chris-Craft UPN stations would have been better off had someone else other than Fox bought them.1 point

Everybody says that, but it's about marketing. McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King generally locate near each other for a reason. The channel dial is real estate no matter what newfangled ideas people have these days. OTA parity is being right there with channels 2 and 4, instead of having to flip through dozens of stations to get to 62.1 point

I think the reason this angle wasn’t brought up is because it’s not a legitimate argument/defense. They’re really grasping at straws trying to make race an issue here. While ABC has made missteps by not clearly stating why they were pulled and what the next steps are; there is enough evidence, imo, to warrant why a deeper inquiry needed to take place and why they were pulled off the air. As far as Robach and Holmes is concerned; the damage to their reputations was caused by them. They’re acting like being divorced, serial adulterers is some kind of badge of honor. It is not.1 point

WWJ has one of the biggest signals of any full-service television station in Michigan and they have good cable placement. They don’t need a superfluous LPTV. They just need investment. Weigel has “CBS 58” Milwaukee and “ABC 57” South Bend and you don’t see them being embarrassed about those numbers because they invested in the stations and have tried. CBS never did that with WWJ for a garden variety of reasons, and wound up making “62” a tainted brand by negligence and inaction.1 point

I'll gave them the solution. They could probably buy LPTV Channel 3 very cheaply. I doubt that anybody can even pick it up over there with rabbit ears. Once you have a virtual Channel 3, FCC rules say that every signal you own in the market can have the same channel number. They can become CBS 3 with a snap of the fingers, right along with Fox 2 and NBC 4.1 point

And I still miss Steve, Jillian and Dorothy; especially on Good Day Live (Nationally Syndicated Show). IMO, I wish GDL was back.1 point

"Good Day L.A" has not been the same since the days of Steve, Jillian and Dorothy co-hosting the program. During their tenure, it was competitive with the "KTLA Morning News" from time to time. It will be interesting to see what Jennifer and Melvin will be like on "Good Day L.A."1 point

Wouldn’t be surprised to see affiliates owned by Gray, Scripps, Sinclair and CBS just refuse to carry any NewsNation cramdowns over the CW by Nexstar. Scripps can simulcast Scripps News, CBS has the “Now” hybrid newscasts, Sinclair has TND and Gray stations have a sizable commitment to local news.1 point

One thing I like that CBS started as the trend is not just minimalist deconstruction in their rebrand, but harkening back to previous eras in their rebrand. CBS had the most success in their rebrand, so much so that ABC copied them, and now NBC is following suit. If FOX didn't sell out to Disney, I would have totally seen the searchlights come back at some point.1 point

I like the attempt at a news set/newscast with news graphics and a logo modeled after ABC News, "PBF News," from WPBF 25 out of West Palm Beach, Florida in the mid-1990s:1 point

To answer the first question, Newsmax didn’t seem to care when it initially went on air. At no point did a producer/director decide to pull the plug and go to break when Logan brought up the topic of a “global cabal.” On the contrary, Bolling appeared to encourage her ramblings, and even articulated the sentiments behind the “Great Replacement” theory. The whole segment was nothing but a series of conspiratorial (and arguably overtly racist) claims. Even the lower third graphics seemed to encourage Logan’s BS (ex: “Logan: It’s Good vs. Evil” when she was going on about the End Times). I get the feeling that Newsmax is only now condemning her statements because they gave the game away and got caught. As for what happened to Lara, I’ve wondered the same about many of my friends and relatives who’ve found sanctuary in the far right/far left (though the far right seems to have received more mainstream acceptance in the GOP than the far left has received among Democrats). I can name people in my own personal life who were otherwise good, decent, and rational, but even they have been seduced into becoming fanatics with a hunger for political violence. They didn’t become like that overnight; it happened over several years. The quote about fascism coming to America “wrapped in the Flag and carrying the Cross” comes to mind. It’s not because patriotism and religion are always inherently fascist (they aren’t). Rather, it’s that extreme ideologies become palatable and popular by dressing themselves in respectable clothing. They attract people with the familiar, and slowly but surely drag those people towards extremism. I know that sounds overtly political, but I can’t think of another way to explain why so many respectable people have gone off the deep end. The only other answer is that they’re human, and humans are capable of these things. That answer scares the daylights out of me.1 point
