there is so much wrong here… I can’t even.5 points

The only thing I dislike is still how the top stories are all "breaking news." A fad ABC started that I won't forgive. If everything is breaking news, nothing is.4 points

The update is… fine. I do like the new logo. The insert graphics, particularly the lower thirds, need some work. I hate the little chip for story content, it feels like a tired old local news gimmick. It and the thin arrow make the banner appear very crowded. The best looking part of the package is probably that repeating N logo loop in the background. It’s nice they updated, but it’s nothing special.4 points

Firstly, blue for high pressure and red for low pressure is the NOAA standard marking. Also, I'm fairly certain those are both just generic graphics that came with the systems... That KTRK one was designed in the weather office if it isn't a generic one. No broadcast designer would have made that. For what it's worth, WLS is using generic WSI high/low pressure system icons...3 points

The margins on everything are so tight this looks like a social/streaming-forward design more than broadcast. I'm super surprised they went with Bebas. It's EVERYWHERE these days.2 points

I'm surprised the lower-thirds go to the edges and bottom of the screen. I thought that style was long gone.2 points

Studio 1A, as always. No reference was made that they'd be leaving for tonight's relaunch. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ctr3XoHp4B_/2 points

We don't need anymore ABC O&O line-ups. KTRK isn't using their talent resources particularly well. We get it.2 points

Daystar's YouTube thumbnails are all high quality design work, it wouldn't surprise me if they did that all in-house and WWJ just went with it. The logo is probably official, because someone had the common sense to refuse to slap anything with the word "News" on this show. Don't get your hopes up that they'll start rolling it out elsewhere... I'd wager this was done specifically to distance this from their news product, regardless of what time it airs.1 point

I wonder if there is room to declutter the opens a bit. I’ve been watching WLS since the new package debuted. As a whole, it’s great and I’m excited to see it implemented at other stations, but there is A LOT happening in those opens that distracts the eye from the actual newscast name and brand.1 point
-
Probably the same, I don’t know if they’ll be customizations. But i see pictures Raleigh skyline (which changing a lot so they probably have to update the pictures, the aerial shots a lot for the next few years.) as they currently do with the current opens. Maybe Downtown Raleigh, the NC state bell tower, PNC Arena, Midtown, i don’t see Durham or Chapel Hill, and Fayetteville being included. The Durham studio is getting renovated, 4pm and 5:30pm Amber Rupinta confirmed that on a Facebook live. The skyline has changed a lot.1 point

I don’t know yet they might keep it.1 point

Looks like a paid program (which would make sense considering the time) decided to make their own logo, IMO. EDIT: Considering the show appears to be a Daystar (Christian broadcaster) program, highly unlikely this is official from WWJ. In fact, I’m a little surprised at the liberal use of the Eyemark.1 point

A few thoughts (probably way too many for such a short clip tbh): 1) I don’t know why they would bother promoting a show that airs on Sundays at midnight (assuming this is a promo). 2) If your station’s on channel 62, I’m not sure I would be eager to make that the prominent brand. I get that their station is harder to find for OTA viewers, but using channel 62 as the primary brand sort of makes your station look cheap (as if you’re promoting the fact that your station is hard to reach). It also goes against the whole “streaming first” thing that they had going for them.1 point

it’s interesting that Shayla has been filling in for Lisa Argen on weekend mornings the last 2 weeks at KGO. Legendary Spencer Christian was doing weather from home a few weeks ago. Must be under the weather. Frances Dinglasan was filling in for Spencer last week and this weekend. Drew Tuma pulled overtime the other day doing all newscasts except 11pm which looked taped and still worked Friday morning. I guess they couldn’t get Lisa. Spencer or Frances since Sandyha was out. Side note: KPIX. We only have 3 person weather team and we’re still surviving Not that I’m aware of….1 point

They are much better at designing websites and magazines than news graphics. I guess that's why they tried to make some graphics look like web pages with tabs/arrows, tiles that swipe the screen like you would on some apps, and ellipses marks on banners that look like a more options icon. I was watching part of GMA this morning and noticed their weather graphics, which look a lot like WLS', aren't optimized for hot weather and triple digits. They tired to show three one hundred degree days in a row, and it looked like 101100101 instead of 101 100 101. Even the weather lady said it "looks like a serial number." The ridge of high pressure was your basic white and blue and didn't show the clockwise spin around the H either. That high pressure, which has sinking air, is the reason for the hot weather and KTRK's way of depicting it much better with a red high, which does have the clockwise arrows that spin around on the H's circle and red color gradiant all over the map. Both of those elements makes it look hot and color of the High tells you why it's hot. Whereas a blue high looks cool, and with no arrows, you don't even teach viewers which way high pressure spins let alone convey that it's the reason for the heat.1 point

They have different commercial break structures for one, along with an entirely different structure to their unions and they're royalties overall, so unless it's packed into an ad-friendly format like Benny Hill and Monty Python were, it's usually passed on. There's also 'oh no scary accents!' syndrome that makes them a hard sell (though all those Discovery reality shows with bad mic work needing to be subtitled/lots of mumbling are much worse). But the other thing is a lot of folks have long figured out VPNs to watch direct from overseas without the obnoxious sell-throughs many syndicated shows have now (theme weeks and 'special offers'), and UK-specific streaming services now exist in the US, so that's where their focus went long ago, along with public television. It's also why BBC America is just an American rerun farm now, because AMC's budget cuts have killed their acquisition budget.1 point
-
I know we have talked about this before for previous years, but why hasn’t the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 tired to sell some of their shows to the US syndicate market? I’ll say it, I will watch Countdown, Pointless, and Tipping Point before I watch another newscast.1 point

KABC Los Angeles -Morning Traffic Anchor Brianna Ruffalo also does 11am weather. Also Scott Reiff reports from Air 7. -Dedicated automotive reporter and health reporter. No consumer unit, these stories are usually fronted by a GA reporter. -I have seen a sports full screen with scores on the 11pm if no talent is available. Rob Fukuzaki is the long time sports director. Curt Sandoval handles weekends. -Weather is stacked: Legendary Dallas Raines, Leslie Lopez, Tony Cabrera, Shayla Girardin, and Alex Cheney -Fun Fact: Celebrity chef Bobby Flay's daughter is a community journalist for ABC7, Sophie Flay.1 point

They’ve been using that for a few weeks now. It’s, apparently, not part of the new package. Just a random graphic they generated with the new abc7 logo.1 point

Would it be this? That's looks fine to me, because the logo is still unique and instantly recognizable, just 2D instead of 3D. On the other hand, the sometimes used sans-serif logo for KTRK's 13 Eyewitness News looks way too generic and lacks any kind of sophistication or class. When you think of Texas, you don't think of a something that's soft and whimsical-looking. So, I think it's much more suitable for California than Channel 13.1 point

Kelly Costa did a mix of live and recorded segments through at least 2:40am ET. The only reason I know this is because right now at 3:40am ET, they mistakenly have a segment in the prerecorded loop from exactly one hour ago, which contains live radar and tornado warnings/severe t-storm warnings from last hour. Same thing that happened last night, where a previously-live segment with active radar and warnings mistakenly aired in the pre-recorded loop an hour after it first aired live. Kelly did record some different non-time-sensitive segments earlier tonight that should be airing right now. Looks like they've got the wrong playback file loaded up.1 point

I expect WMYT will air the reruns. WJZY will probably pick up the new shows, Person, Place or Thing, and maybe move the late night runs of 25 Words or Less and Pictionary to daytime. Maybe even expand the news but I think 3pm, 10am or 11am news is overkill.1 point

No official word on Detroit, but it’s expected that the CW affiliation will go to WADL.1 point

That is exactly what it feels like to me here. They were going to fight... Till they realize that it would be cheaper to merge and have a way to bring in way more cash then it currently does!1 point

Someone posted earlier in the thread that call letters aren’t much of a factor when it comes to affiliation changes. FOX 5 in SD is still operating as KSWB (San Diego’s WB)1 point

WPHL’s programming is easily movable. (Modern Family and Friends). KRON will probably have to get rid of their 8 and 9pm News unless they can air CW from 7-9pm. WTTA has an 8pm news produced by WFLA and Spanish programming from 9-10. Maybe KRON and WTTA could put all that on their .2’s. They could also keep their MyNetwork TV because that’s 2 more hours they wouldn’t have to schedule.1 point

Yep. I saw it with WPHL (very obvious yes) back when Nexstar confirmed their majority acquisition of The CW. So I'm not surprised in the slightest. I can't wait for the stations' new era with The CW.1 point

Brigit co-hosted Fox Weather Now from Dallas today while Ian hosted from the studio. Maybe this means they'll be on this show together regularly...we'll see. Despite Brigit being back, Fox Weather Live still aired only from 6pm-8pm ET. The untitled overnight loop, hosted tonight by Steve Bender, again started at 8pm ET.1 point

12-3pm ET is Kendall Smith Mon-Fri alongside Michael Estime Mon-Tue and then Craig Herrera Wed-Fri. Steve and Marissa start at 6pm ET, but given how weird the schedule has been, it's difficult to determine what their scheduled end time is actually going to be. They went till 10pm ET Monday-Thursday last week, but then ended at 8pm ET this past Friday and Monday due to shorthandedless.1 point

Nexstar has found some pocket change to renew it, albeit with a smaller cast and budget.1 point

In that initial social media post, Mark had said he'd be doing evenings for several weeks. In addition to an obvious tryout, I'm guessing it aligns with some of Karen's vacation time (she was off Saturday, for example). As for Christian, again, they might as well give someone consistent hours, instead of a downright silly rotation of characters, like the interim period between Ben Bradley and Rivera. I'd bet that this is the eventual permanent line-up, though I still would not rule out an outside hire for either slot. Mark to nights does almost seem like a lock, at this point.1 point
-
It was the same arrangement (pretty much) this past weekend too. Mark as with Karen, Greg & Dionne on the evening newscasts & Christian was with Jaisol & Samantha in the morning. Seems like it could work.1 point

I knew WOOD was always running away with #1 and thought ZZM was #2 and WWMT was in third. Somewhere I read that, but then found out WWMT does well in Battle Creek side while ZZM does well in Grand Rapids. It seems when it was last few years under Gannett the money stop flowing. If you weren't KSDK, KARE, KUSA, WUSA those were the money maker stations. Then when it became TEGNA- well it became another mediocre media company.1 point

Very bold look, at least judging from that one image. This is interesting: Wonder if it'll feel more like NBC News Now with the design.1 point
-
Changes like this aren't made lightly so NBC must be feeling pretty confident with themselves. You gotta give them credit for adapting to the times (heavy digital focus) and trying something new. It's not a bad logo. Hearkens back to the old NBC 'N' of the 70s. I might have preferred the diagonal ends be sharp rather than squared off. Also interesting that they've kept the white border on the peacock after ditching it everywhere else.1 point

Also waiting for the full reveal but I really like this sneak peek - it feels like we might see the first truly "modern" nightly broadcast newscast. I don't know how to phrase this exactly, but there's something about it that feels mold-breaking to me.1 point

I really like the logo right now, but I'll reserve judgment for it and the new look as a whole for when it debuts. I'm real excited for it.1 point

Yo, what exactly has Gray Television done that would provoke CBS to leave WANF?? Everyone keeps saying this. I don't get it. If CBS wanted to move to 69, they'd have done so back in 2006 or a long time ago. There is a reason why they sold 69 only to regain it coincidentally just after merging with Viacom. If things went South with the CW, they'll just either run an independent, do something else we don't expect them to do with 69 or sell 69 into a duopoly with one of the other stations and MAYBE get something back. But I don't even see any reason why they'd dump the CW as long as they still have that small ownership stake. Otherwise, they'd have dumped the full 100 in Nexstar's lap. To say nothing of just how badly Gray could screw CBS up if CBS really tried to pull its programming from 46. Remember, there are many more CBS stations owned by Gray. By this logic, WTTV should still be the CW affiliate and WBXI should be CBS.1 point
