Caught some of the WEWS 4:30am portion of Good Morning Cleveland and it was basically an edited series of packages with a little weather in between. Most likely, the future of Scripps newscasts. In another thread, someone likened this approach to news like the Al Schottlekotte approach WCPO used until the 80s. This was later copied by WIAT for their "42 Daily News" relaunch in the late 90s. Back when Al Schottlekotte did it, it was unique and driven by his personality. Now with Scripps launching this approach at their stations, it's cheap, lazy, and basically throws the concept of live news out the window. And in Cleveland, WKYC has once again seemingly come to their senses after "normalizing" their newscasts and it's WEWS once again that's gone off the deep end. Meanwhile, despite Nexstar taking hold of WJW, their dominance still remains and WOIO is now owned by a major broadcaster seeing how Gray has leaped ahead of both Scripps and Tegna.2 points

After over 11 and a half years, WGAL is about to say goodbye to Studio B. New set makes its premiere on Tuesday afternoon. I wonder if this is Studio A. Not sure. But … finally! https://www.linkedin.com/posts/kristin-kay-315b44111_so-much-hard-work-and-brain-power-over-the-activity-7111802338553552896-S1XR — Matt1 point

Today was the day and the new WGAL Studio A made it's premiere on the Noon newscast. It is a 50 foot by 50 foot set, bigger than previous Studio B and it's just beautiful. Hats off to Hearst for making a great investment in WGAL. Here is a link to the new set including time-lapse video the construction, that took about 3 months. https://www.wgal.com/article/take-a-look-at-wgals-new-state-of-the-art-news-set/45316686 -- Matt1 point

Update regarding Channel 9 Freeport. WSLN was lit up last Friday (9/22). Station announced that The CW, Antenna TV & Circle will move from WIFR's LP signal to the new full power signal. But in the interim they will keep those networks on both signals for a grace period. The station also announced that they're keeping two WIFR CBS simulcasts on WREX (23.10) & WFBN-LD (23.11) a status quo. Which I don't really understand since you now have a full power station of your own. Yeah I'm aware of the ten-year agreement. But since you now have full power stick again in the Stateline, why not end that WREX carriage deal, and move that simulcast to WSLN's subchannel? Let WREX have that chunk of spectrum to themselves.1 point

Wtoc in action. They’ve appeared to have dropped “live local now” and brought back their old slogan “the southeast news leader” in the open1 point

agreed. We need warmer lighting in this Hi Def era. Cold washed out lighting looks horrendus on HD screens.1 point

The set looks fantastic. Its the drab lighting plan that really lets it down and make the talent look flat. And the cold temperature/colour makes skin tones and wood tones look dead. I think this set would look great if they re-lit it. Its really goes to show a great set can look terrible if its lit badly. Goodness.1 point

Yeah the live update open is more appealing to me because it’s dynamic without being too busy like the opener.1 point

That live update open is slick. Love how they kinda echo the ABC Times Square studio exterior.1 point

There are first times for everything., and it’s a perfectly reasonable approach.1 point

Did they look at the negative ratings records they set with CW Now before they ditched that timeslot and decide 'we can do much worse'?1 point

I designed this open. We needed something fresh pretty badly so I whipped this up using some aesthetics from GrayOne. Without giving away the details, I can tell you a 3 phase relaunch is in motion. Phase I begins October 31st as we begin our 75th year, Phase II will begin in early January with some more really big changes. Then phase III happens middle of next year. And yes, part of this rebrand is launching GrayONE. So, stay tuned for some really exciting changes!1 point

Oh I believe you; I’m just saying that if I had to guess, that was the logic behind launching this morning.1 point
-
Most launches would happen on either midday or an early evening during the week or a weekend evening. But I've never see a change happen on a weekend morning.1 point
-
I wouldn’t say so actually; if there are any bugs/glitches, better to sort them out on a Saturday morning than during the week when more people are watching.1 point

Not all situations are comparable. Chris Cuomo crossed a huge ethical line. That doesn’t mean every other person related to a public figure in hot water is going to cross a line. Keep her off covering that story, fine. If there is evidence she crosses a line, do what needs to be done. Don’t assume a problem where one is not indicated and stymie her career for something she did not do.1 point

I don't think it's necessary for MSNBC's anchors and reporters to mention the fact that one of their colleagues is related to a figure in the news for corruption. But I think it would be necessary for her to mention that at the top of her show as a reason why she is not covering one of the week's big stories. I think it's unfair to punish or sideline Alicia for her father's troubles, but perhaps it would be good to have her skip this weekend.1 point

It makes sense to sideline Alicia for a period of time. Other than in reference to her show’s absence I don’t think it’s necessary for them to report on anything beyond the facts of the case. Alicia isn’t implicated in any of the legal charges against her father.1 point

Don’t expect anything earth shattering. it’s smaller than 3K that they are in now. Essentially, think of 3B but with curved walls. Same style lucite desk. Same blue Peacocks all over. if I didn’t know it was a different studio; I wouldn’t have guessed.1 point
-
It’s pretty easy to argue. No one would be recycling those at this point. The comedy stuff they’re plugging the hole with is what it is, but it fits what they’re doing with the hour, broadly. Rehashed PBS interviews? Not a chance.1 point

I just gotta re-emphasize, wow. The Mornings at 10 show is really nice. Such a great show! It's been on for about 7 days now, what's nice about the show is that it really shows the personality of the presenters and in some ways, we get access to see really what the on-air staff thinks. It's just a more relaxed show. And I absolutely love the chatter between the presenters during and in between stories too. Really is a nicer vibe. We get to see them weigh their opinions on the topics a bit more. And in some cases, there are sides to the reporters and presenters that I've never seen before up till this show started so really nice work WABC for really not just delivering more in-depth stories that are compelling but allowing the presenters to put a bit more of their own spin on it. I hope they also allow others to sub in as well. So refreshing for WABC! Today we saw Nina Pineda's side and view of the story they are very real. It's like "Happy Talk" that we all know and love but on a whole other level. As alluded to in an earlier, post, while it's not a show that is intended to be groundbreaking or high in the ratings, it's still a great show for the office too, or if you are at home working, you have it playing in the background and streaming. It's reminiscent of the "View" format where the hosts themselves share their ideas and thoughts on the story and even during the live reports you can see more time spent and you just hear more of the input of the reporter which I think is great but still holdings on to the Eyewitness News live reports. Maybe they can evolve it more in the future, maybe do an "on-location" broadcast or have it outside or in different parts of the city. I really hope they play around and try different things with this show, either way, it looks great! Kudos to WABC for putting this great show together! Mike, Shirleen and Sam are a solid group.1 point
