  1. The writing has been on the wall for years. GMA has (unfortunately, in my opinion) been using less and less of its Times Square backyard. It was once upon a time a focal point of the show with the windows open behind the anchor desk, frequent camera shots of TS, and regular segments outside. Given that this has all been mostly eliminated, there's frankly no reason to continue renting what is highly-valuable real estate. They could build a studio in the middle of nowhere and produce the show in its current format.

  2. Will they use the same set? Will they go back to the pre- Covid desk? It already looks small and inconsequential; and now it will be moving into a smaller space.

  3. Agreed. A majority of people going to Times Square are NOT going to see the Good Morning America studio and a majority don’t even realize that’s where Good Morning America is. WABC is also not an attraction in Lincoln Square. Lincoln Center is the main attraction. The street side WABC studio is kind of cool walk by for some, most others don’t even care or know that it exists there. I’m sure the local residents and business owners will miss seeing the staff from ABC and WABC each day, but that’s about it.

  5. The CW air two seasons of WWE Smackdown in the late 2000s so there is a precedent (i.e.. airing pro wrestling). If NWA/CW can produce a good product, they shouldn't have too much a problem attracting an audience. How big of an audience is unknown.

  10. It does feel like Disney can get much more renting out the studios, which had been the original plan when the industry was a lot less conglomerated but over time it just became an ABC-exclusive space. It also didn't help at all that Times Square was pedestrianized so you're not getting an audience stuck in one NYPD-corralled place, but they're wandering and exploring the space and without traffic, you no longer get a sense that it's in the middle of a city, but like WCCO/Nicolet Mall, it's crowded at certain times, empty at others.

  11. Times Sq has become a strong part of the GMA identity, but agreed that GMA and Today have been using their outdoor audiences less and less. If CBS Mornings is still around in 2025, they need to really capitalize off of the Times Square brand now.

  12. Scary stuff, and interesting story, but I cannot believe they led with it and called it "breaking news" when they already had time to put together a package. It affects none of the viewers. Maybe it was an otherwise slow news day locally?

  17. I wouldn’t say that. Times Square is a destination in and of itself, and Lincoln Square is home to both the Juilliard School and Lincoln Center. It sucks that those areas are both losing a longtime presence, but it also makes sense for Disney/ABC to have all their NY operations under one roof.

  18. I was in the second-floor studio's audience a couple times in the years before its axing; I was excited to go (after peeking in the first floor windows every time I visit NYC) and had a blast each time (I even got to meet Robin and George after the show wrapped). So yeah, while I can't wait for the new set and era in Hudson Square to come, it really will be an end of a era onTimes Square that will be remembered fondly by many (me included).

  19. Pretty easy to explain that one (WVTV-DT2 does the same thing); they want the network to start on time for the sake of DVRs and just throwing on episodes of iCrime in that 9-10 timeslot that aren't critical to watch in full is a good buffer to assure it starts at 10 in case the game does go into overtime or runs late because of a weather delay.

  21. Crazy, was thinking about this today. I was having a discussion with a family member — who retired early — and is very big on people of a certain age calling it quits to enjoy retirement. The way I see it, when you love and are passionate about a career, you aren't rushing to leave. All things considered, when one retires, what is there to do at home? Chuck aside, in the average citizen's case, retirement often means sitting at home, watching daytime television, and waiting for the eventual. Especially if their family doesn't live close and their friends aren't in good health or have passed, going to work is what gives many of the elderly the drive to keep going. In Chuck's case, I'm sure he has decent wealth to travel and live well. We aren't privy to his personal life, so I'll guess that he really just loves his job. It pays well, isn't physically taxing, and simply requires him to sit and read a pre written script for about 22 minutes excluding commercials. Plus, Chuck's usually on about 3 out of 5 nights a week. As long as he remains in good health and isn't demanding any dramatic salary increases, lets see how long he can go for.

  22. A market size does not determine a step up or step down. How much happier (or unhappier) you are with your professional life, personal life, living conditions, surrounding environment, your income vs cost of living and the opportunities available for your family determine whether a new job is a step up or step down.
