  1. Beautiful tribute to Charles Osgood today. And really made you see how much the show is a former shell of itself. Charles was so curious and seemed to bring that curiosity into the show each week. Jane Pauley really doesn’t do that, and is there to really just introduce the stories. If Charlie was still hosting, it would still be on set. Otherwise where would they put the piano???

  3. No, that's not a mistype. Dr. Phil plans to launch a new cable network by February which will feature him in primetime from a new base in the DFW Metroplex and former staffers with the talk show have also moved out there. And yes, he plans a news operation of some kind led by Joel Cheatwood, so make of that what you will. All I can say is it would probably be easier to lease time on OWN or another existing cable channel than launching a new one during the decline of the format, but apparently I'm not mainlining Dr. Phil's out-of-date gut here.

  4. Behind the scenes at CNN as the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up on liftoff 38 years ago: (This was shot by a crew who happened to be making a promo in the newsroom at the time.)

  6. I've never been a fan of this look. Either don't put the desk in the corner, or embrace that piece of the building and stick logos there. It looks so poorly done this way.

  7. Nicely done with the graphics. Not to nit pick but I highly recommend getting microphones and making sure your audience can easily hear your talent.

  8. Not surprised one bit... Good for him

  9. What will probably happen is the usual scenes you see in the intro, followed by the new flying graphics in the new package.

  10. I would say they have most of the graphics ready for it ... except for the open. I really believe they are having trouble matching the style of the collage-style open to the Action News theme. to the graphic look. I still think they will keep the Action News open but will adopt the rest of the package. Some things, you cannot change. -- Matt

  11. The entirety of this morning’s edition of Sunday Morning was dedicated to Charles.

  12. Wow, this is the first time I’m seeing this project, but it looks fantastic! Seems like a wonderful way to introduce high school kids to video journalism (and journalism in general). They certainly seem really enthusiastic about it. Good for you guys.

  15. The small details matter! I’m very pleased to see that WABC is using an alternate talent intro for Friday 6pm shows that feature Sam Ryan instead of Ryan Field.

  16. The only way they can make the newscasts better is by having each station serve their respective markets, not this consolidated nonsense.

  17. Three things will always resonate with a Sunday morning: church & worship, NFL football...and Charles Osgood. His friendly personality, signature bow tie, and interesting segments made a Sunday morning on CBS worthwhile...especially with a cup of coffee. He will forever be missed, say hi to the other Charles (Kuralt) up there, still probably 'on the road' (if there are highways and backroads up in Heaven), and of course, Walter. RIP!

  18. Not to sound speculative, but I do think the prospect of networks dumping affiliations with certain station groups is becoming more feasible. The networks (except for Fox) are already able to distribute “network-only” feeds of their programming; ABC did just that when Sinclair and Hulu had a carriage dispute last year. Sure, it might be a loss for OTA viewers, but I’m sure the networks would find a way to get their feeds carried on streaming/cable. It’s not as though the networks care that much about OTA antenna viewers anyway; if they did, we wouldn’t be seeing Peacock-exclusive NFL playoff games. I don’t see it happening anytime soon, but I do think there will come a time when the networks won’t need the affiliates, especially if they’re run by a company like Sinclair. I’d be intrigued to see what the TV landscape looks like 10 years from now. Disney can’t be happy to associate with Sinclair, and I imagine if the opportunity presented itself, they’d want to rid themselves of that association.

  19. Hmm... I don't think so given the fact that Kansas City isn't that known for collage sports 'n stuff. KMCI is gonna be 38 the Spot for a while.

  20. “I absolutely love talking to real people about real problems. People who aren’t just complaining but are actively looking for real solutions to better their lives,” McGraw said. “American families and our core values are under attack. I love this country, and I believe family is the backbone of our society. Together we are going to stand strong and fight for the very soul and sanity of America and get things that matter back on track.” This Dr. Phil quote from the announcement feels kinda TBN-ish in tone, now that I think about it

  21. I will never complain how dated CBS21 looks here ever again. And the NBC side of that duopoly is not having that rebrand at all. Those talent opens ... yeesh. -- Matt

  22. In a place like San Antonio, it's an irony for Sinclair to be marketing the station that way, with it's strong and historic ties to the Hispanic population. Because we all know downstate, stuff is going on at the border that they sure love to cover, along with someone's very important laptop.

  23. Like most affiliates, creative services are no longer a priority. You have one underpaid artist doing all the work for Sinclair San Antonio. You're not going to get great work.
