Which countries? (This is your friendly reminder to please identify countries by name, not just flag. Not everyone reading this board has the flags of all countries memorized, especially when the flags are represented as 18px-wide icons.)3 points

Good God. I hope this doesn't go through. I hate Tegna with a passion but I'm not interested in Nexstar controlling most of the country's stations3 points

Plenty of graphics-related news internationally: Today, the TTV channel introduced a new design from Red Bee Creative, the first in 10 years. Rustavi 2 has rebranded again, including their newscast. Nova TV in CZ has rebranded their newscast again: Antena 3 rebranded their newscast division to match the updated branding: vlc-record-2025-09-01-13h14m13s-d38583ff1aab524df7578a12b5359f760b9dddda_hls.m3u8-.mp4 vlc-record-2025-09-01-12h04m16s-dvr.m3u8_start1756706123end1756713323-.mp42 points

France Better late than never. If you can understand French, then you can enjoy Jacques' last moments on TF1 after nearly 27 years doing 13H as a fill-in. This is from his last edition on May 9th.2 points

I don't think Chris (nor NewsNation) believed he was going to bring in the same amount of viewers as he had at CNN. He was/is a familiar face (to viewers) and despite some baggage, would draw in people to the fledgling network that is News Nation. Move importantly, given the current state of cable (and linear television in general); any viewership gains should be viewed as a positive. And to no surprise, the New York Post didn't put this issue/topic in the proper context.2 points

Makes me wonder how much longer stations like WFMJ live on. They benefited from WKBN selling out to non-local interests and later subsuming WYTV. They even sacrificed "The Vindicator" in favor of forging ahead with WFMJ. Where else does a station exist that is still owned by it's founding family and NEVER changed their affiliation? The only major change in their history was moving from their founding Channel 73 to 21 in the 1950s. Then again WEWS is in a similar boat as Scripps founded the station in 1947 and still owns them. Their only major change was losing CBS to WJW after Storer bought them, and they've been ABC ever since. By comparison, Nexstar is an upstart from the 1990s that is now the largest broadcaster in America. If they were founded a decade before, they would be another junk-bonded blip in history like Gillett or Great American.2 points

The only real way local news can work in Akron is if they literally go the Patrick Star route of taking the city and push it somewhere else by 50 additional miles. It is just too damn close for Nielsen to carve out a DMA for it. And if they did, Cleveland would plummet from a borderline top 20 market to in the upper 30s or possibly low 40s. Even if S. Bernard Berk had been successful getting WAKR-TV on channel 11, it would have inevitably moved up north.2 points

Allen Media Group somehow had the budget to (at least) consult with, of all design agencies, Vivid Zero/Defiant to come up with some drafts of a standardized look for its stations. There was a (now locked) thread on here a while ago where someone claimed that Allen stations would be getting a mandated look, and these could possibly be the package in question. These screenshots came from Defiant's most recent studio reel of news graphics.1 point

Patently and factually untrue, and easily disproven by spending 5 minutes to look things up. Such as: Newsmax/Ruddy objected to and opposed the Sinclair-Tribune merger in 2017 [ https://www.nexttv.com/news/chris-ruddys-newsmax-slams-sinclair-tribune-merger-167343 ], [https://nypost.com/2018/07/18/conservative-media-boss-told-trump-he-opposed-sinclair-tribune-merger/] on the same grounds he's now objecting the Nexstar-Tegna merger. Nexstar in 2018 swooped in and structured their merger so it would pass the FCC review. Chris Ruddy then wrote an op-ed in Politico lambasting ownership loopholes, called on the FCC to "communicate a clear national standard - one that respects the ideas of localism, competition and diversity" [ https://www.politico.com/agenda/story/2018/09/11/tv-station-mergers-fcc-000697] hE's FriEndS wIt TrUmP is a childish argument. Chris Ruddy / Newsmax gave Bill Clinton a glowing, front page interview in 2007 [https://archive.nytimes.com/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/11/01/bill-clinton-gives-interview-to-former-foe/] telling the Palm Beach Post "we consider [Bill Clinton] a friend, and he considers us friends". Bubba dropped by the Newsmax crib later in 2010 while campaigning in the area. Then in 2012 Ruddy traveled with Clinton and his foundation overseas and blogged on the foundation's website and wrote glowing reviews of the foundation's work. Ruddy is not a Republican, nor is he "far right". He's libertarian. Who happens to have some overlap with "Republicans" on a few issues that cause some people's knickers to stretch into a wedgy.1 point

I really do hope there's light at the end of the tunnel for KIMT. Allen has turned that station and its others into total shitholes. The sooner they are gone, the better. They need to sell TWC too.1 point

Actually, I don't care for either network, so let the popcorn fireworks fly! I'm curious to see how long this tit-for-tat battle lasts, knowing viewership for both networks is still pretty crap.1 point

Spain Here you are... the new season of Telediario on RTVE. By season, I mean the changing of the presenters. It sometimes happens in Spain, but not always. But this one for RTVE is highly anticipated. First off, Marc Sala moves off from La Hora to deliver the weekend editions of TD. Veteran television and radio journalist Lourdes Maldonado (Antena 3, TeleMadrid, RNE) is coming back to television to join Marc on the weekend side. But most importantly, and why its so highly anticipated, the return of legendary journalist and one of the most trusted and respected voices in the country, Pepa Bueno, returns to RTVE to anchor the 21:00 edition after a 13-year hiatus. On debut night, she'll be interviewing the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, which will be aired as a half-hour special at 21:30, immediately following TD2, on all major RTVE networks that carry its news content (Flagship La 1, Secondary La 2, news channel 24h, national radio broadcaster RNE, and the streaming service RTVE Play). All of this begins on Monday, September 1st, so it is quickly approaching.1 point

In case you're wondering how dire things are at an Allen station, this is not a good sign; one director and one anchor at KIMT on a high school football Friday night having to compile an entire newscast by themselves, along with game video and stats. Kamie Roesler should be proud of herself, but putting someone in this position should never be tolerated. But hey, glad Byron was able to send that suck-up baby gift to Tiffany Haddish rather than paying for an additional MMJ in Mason City/Rochester.1 point

First Llamas, now Cuomo... Sounds like another New York Post hit piece. From today's (8/30/25), Crains Chicago Business: 'Even so [in related to Cuomo's ratings], NewsNation has been growing overall, according to Nielsen figures. Nielsen figures indicate that Cuomo’s show is up nearly 25% in total viewers compared with his first quarter on the network, suggesting that while the audience remains modest compared with rivals, it has grown steadily since launch.'1 point

It is far more likely that said companies are already drafting out their exit ramps and preparing to sell out to each other. The networks are living on borrowed time and it's inevitable that they abandon OTA TV altogether.1 point

On this 20th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina... Compelling coverage from the storm's aftermath Today (2005). Unimportant side note: It's also great to see more late era Katie footage. The blue wall behind the anchors really downgraded during this period but got a good refresh when Meredith came in. WWL Coverage after the levees broke (2005). They were on a college campus in Baton Rouge with technical assistance from students. It was amazing to see how they were understandably using what appears to be college newscast graphics after the storm.1 point

In the markets where Nexstar and Tegna will be "merging" their newsrooms, I hope their competitors (Gray, Hearst, Scripps, Sinclair, the networks, etc.) are increasing the marketing and advertising budgets of their stations to take full advantage of the opportunity they're being handed.1 point

It's amazing anyone at the station thinks blatantly copying WNT's ridiculously long opening and aesthetics, right down to Louis imitating David Muir's delivery, is a good idea. Someone actually signed off on this.1 point

they aren't digging, NBC staffers are leaking because they didn't want Tom taking over, as if they should be allowed any say. As far back as his WTVJ days Tom had reputation for not putting up with lazy, mediocre people who phone it in. In those days, some these people would come to me at sfltv with "tips" to try and damage him by giving me "tips". So the story from college was known to me, which means it was known for a long, long time to people he worked with. As these "tipsters" came to me sometimes I'd ask the late WTVJ anchor Joel Connable about it and he told me, multiple times, Tom is ambitious, great reporter, who works hard and wants to earn his way up but he has no tolerance for mediocrity or behind the camera politics, so some of these people would tie themselves up into a knot if Tom dared to criticise. It was bad enough at times that Joel told me multiple times, unprompted, he'd had to step in and defend Tom from some of these scrags trying to undermine him with station management, sometimes inventing stories about Tom what he said or did, that never happened. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the same people are involved now. If my database on sfltv.com hasn't eaten the comments, there was a back and forth in the comments of one post between WTVJ staffers regarding Tom and since I didn't censor people, names were dropped about the situation.1 point

Will WCCB still be carried on YTTV when they go independent? The irony in all of this was that YTTV DROPPED WMYT after Nexstar took it over, because they didn't carry MyNetworkTV affiliates at the time (since it was a prior FOX O&O). Bahakel happened to have carriage when carrying CW affiliates was not as prevalent as it is now. And it was Nexstar that later changed it's tune to carry stations like WMYT across the country. Acquiring the CW was what led many of their former CW affiliates-now CW O&Os getting on the service.1 point

General inertia in Cleveland has kept WKYC as the runner-up to WJW because it's not like WEWS is any better. Nor has WOIO-WUAB ever had sustained ratings traction. That being said, I can't wait to see Nexstar use data showing WKYC at dead last and justifying the failed station waiver. It doesn't even need to be true!1 point

Total rant here: the cognitive dissonance of TV news consultants telling anchors, reporters, producers, and writers (correctly) to write conversationally like you’re talking with a friend… But also, here’s the shining example of how you should write, which is an ABC World News Tonight cold open filled with dropped linking verbs, excessive false present tense, reversed sentences that sound like Yoda in Star Wars, and clunky urgency phrases like, “as we come on the air tonight” really is infuriating. And that Local 10 World News cold open does all of those things. It’s like they asked ChatGPT to replicate WNT.1 point

One of the nuggets that I deduced from the Block-Gray paperwork is that WHAS is the 4th place station in Louisville, with WLKY leading, WDRB in second, and WAVE in third. I always thought WHAS was better (and one of the better Tegna stations) unless Tegna REALLY drove them into the ground. It's going to be interesting to see when the Nexstar paperwork comes out and they make their case on how they can acquire these stations with little regulatory opposition.1 point

Is this legit? I know they were trying to make the transition pretty seamless for viewers but I didn’t realize they would be using the WNT theme. That is something for sure.1 point

Comprehensive exhibit is up for Gray/Block: https://enterpriseefiling.fcc.gov/dataentry/api/download/attachment/25076f91989faf5b0198aff578690ddf A failing station waiver is requested for WBKI to create the triopoly. I'd argue that it should become available for Tegna --> Nexstar (WHAS) or Hearst (WLKY) first, since neither have duopolies. One way out could be to trade it to Nexstar for a market that creates a problem with the Tegna deal where Gray can take on a second station, or if combined with more pieces, for a new market for Gray (or Nexstar in a hypothetical future deal). If I were the regulators, I would put that condition on the deal.1 point

I wonder what Newsmax's goal is,here? I can assure you that they do not care, in the slightest, for "localism" or local news. Are they running interference for Sinclair, who was alleged to also be gunning for Tegna? Do they think this is sucking up to Trump? Or, maybe, they want local news to fail (and soon) so these companies have to liquidate their assets, giving Newsmax a chance to gobble up some stations so they can really capture the 55-dead demo. No more diginet trees for them! They can get a nice full-power signal to broadcast Newsmax 2 on. Whatever it is, it is not caring so much about local news being so important.1 point
