The desk, the theme, the set, the graphics…not a bit of that matters. The network has gone full-on North Korea mode with slobbering over the administration.3 points

This has nothing to do with how many people donated to the actual public media entities, or any policy changes. The CPB board decided back on December 10th to dissolve, as their original plan, maintaining its legal existence but not doing anything in anticipation of Congress giving them money again someday, was deemed unviable. CPB was never anything more than a funnel from the government to the broadcasters, who are mostly still operating with less money, and it never spoke on the behalf of public media, who have their own lobbying operations.2 points

Action News recently debuted updated openings for the winter season. I noticed something missing, though: shots of Chopper 6 flying around. I wonder why it wasn’t included in the openings.1 point

Interesting. I have observed that since KABC got both a new general manager and new news director in recent years that they there are seemingly leaving their mark, given the new set and the addition of quite a few new on-air talent, who are actually not bad at all. In my humble opinon, that's a good thing that they are threading the needle between those refreshes, and retaining their stability that they have continued to have over many years now.1 point

The anchor of the CBS Evening News actually said "Marco Rubio, we salute you!" at the end of the broadcast tonight. The "story" was an "Only In America" puff piece on the fact that Rubio has many titles in the Trump administration and made it seem like The Entire Internet is celebrating him with AI pics. Seems like something The Onion might have imagined CBS News pulling these days. Ridiculous.1 point

Like I said, people were farming likes and engagement, they don't care and didn't donate to PBS Also,, the fact the CPB never went to the FCC to ask for a rule change allowing NCE designated channels to air ads and collect reteans fees1 point

Reverting to the Dan Rather era music is certainly a choice. Maybe, Tony's replacement in a couple years will revive the James Horner composed Katie Couric 2006-2011 music.1 point

Generic looking. Plus it seems they now focus on gimmicky names for their newscast, weather, etc. Not the KSDK I remember from 12 years ago...1 point

Tegna being Tegna, they really just moved into a plain, vanilla office building like that. At least employees are so thrilled to finally have windows1 point

I know Ernie's estate had a website where stations could use him for a voice for a fee after his death using specific clips, but I don't know what the current view of the estate is (along with his children like Paul Thomas) about digitizing his voice in the same way Jim Fagan's was done for NBC.1 point

This has been covered briefly in the VO part of the forums, but I'll elaborate here as well. Many of you I'm sure have noticed that Nexstar is implementing many "cost saving" efforts including: Switching VO work to SpotVoice: Many stations since Jan 1 have switched, with many more to come Minor graphics changes: Even though most stations are using various forms of Google Fonts for their graphics, a few outliers still exist. WOOD, for example, is in process of switching from Gotham (a licensed font) to Roboto (a Google font). You know.. gotta save those dollars for TEGNA1 point

Not necessarily. Nexstar's first lease option was in 2034, likely had the typical 2-5% per year lease increase (plus insurance, property tax, maintenance), they bought the building for less than it sold for in 2017. So with the lease they're paying 2-5% more each year for an asset that didn't appreciate in 9 years, mortgage is probably costing them less overall and they get to take advantage of depreciation to lower taxable income. The seller is also in distress going through foreclosures and if Nexstar's lease was subordinate - recorded after the mortgage - the lender or next note owner has the right to terminate the lease, not a situation to be in.1 point

Just wanted to put this out here, 10pm broadcast is the last at the current building before KSDK fully moves to their new building.1 point

actually they can't give away WPLG, assuming the public data of the BBH-Graham 2014 deal is accurate. That was a tax deferred swap, selling WPLG would trigger anywhere from $150-$250 million or more in deferred capital gains taxes. To avoid triggering taxes selling to Nexstar will be another complex deal, could happen just almost not worth it At this point there's more benefit to BH letting WPLG decay1 point

My guess is they'll take whatever programming they can get. That said, the ongoing Berkshire Hathaway ownership of WPLG continues to surprise me. But with Warren Buffett no longer chairman of the board, BH could be eevaluating its portfolio. BH could give away WPLG and the loss of it as an asset and the revenue it produces probably wouldn't register as a rounding error on the company's annual report. (Which is a statement about how massive BH is, with asets worth $1.1 trillion as of 2024)1 point

The New Year is about to be here and a change is coming to California’s FOX O&Os starting next week. This is the updated news schedule for weekday evenings in SoCal and the Bay Area as from Monday, January 5. KTTV/KCOP - LOS ANGELES 5-6:30 PM: FOX 11 NEWS (remains as is) 6:30-7 PM: West Coast News Wrap (new time) 8-10 PM: LA Live News Tonight on FOX 11 Plus (remains as is) 10 PM: The full one hour flagship newscast returns after holiday hiatus 11 PM: Good Nite LA returns to normal slot after holiday hiatus KTVU/KICU - SAN FRANCISCO/OAKLAND/SAN JOSE 5-6:30 PM: KTVU FOX 2 NEWS (remains as is) 6:30-7 PM: West Coast News Wrap (new time) 7-7:30 PM: KTVU FOX 2 NEWS (remains as is) 10 PM: The Ten O’Clock News (remains as is) 11 PM: The Eleven O’Clock News (remains as is)1 point

Nexstar is apparently providing a New Year's Eve special to its stations that aren't carrying coverage from one of the big networks. From LateNighter: Nexstar's independent station here in Connecticut, WCTX, is, according to the listings on the WTNH/WCTX website, showing it from 11:00pm to 3:30am, preceded by a "Top Stories of 2025" special at 10:00pm. (Curiously, the listings also show two episodes of Dateline at 8:00pm and 9:00pm; normally, WCTX airs three hours of local news a la early NewsNation.)1 point

ABC-Disney usually sticks to only Kelly & Mark and Tamron along with the 20th leftovers in syndication, so they probably figure CBS can get proper rates and advertisers better than they can since that's right in their wheelhouse so they don't have to worry about that.1 point

Some sad news out Houston, and we lost a weather legend in this country. Former KHOU chief meteorologist and Director of the National Hurricane Center Dr. Neil Frank has passed away at the age of 94. https://www.khou.com/article/news/local/dr-neil-frank-dies/285-26cc29fe-18ee-4e47-bdf3-5039367c021a0 points
