1. Wow! Do you know more details on this.

 2. Not just the first five minutes -- that was the length of the entire newscast at the time. Because four other stations were already airing news at 10 p.m., KPHO had decided to counterprogram in that timeslot instead of going head-to-head with full-length newscasts on KTVK, KSAZ, KPNX, and KNXV. Therefore, for its first few years as a CBS affiliate, the station aired a five-minute newscast at 10 p.m. and followed it with syndicated episodes of Seinfeld.

 4. Sad news indeed. But like I said before, why don't you stick to offering your own condolences. The rest of us can speak for ourselves and never elected you to speak on our behalf.

 5. Very sad news out of Indianapolis. The Dean of Indiana Television News, Howard Caldwell had passed away yesterday at the age of 92. Caldwell started at WRTV 6 (Formerly WFBM) as their main anchor in May of 1959 to his retirement in 1994. Caldwell was inducted into The Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 1991 and The Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame. All of us at TVNT offers out prayers and condolences to Howard Caldwell's family and his friends and colleagues at RTV6. Rest in Peace, Howard and Godspeed. http://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/indianapolis/howard-caldwell-longtime-indianapolis-journalist-has-died-at-age-92

 6. Don't know what's better here...Thompson on the KNXV ID, or Ernie Anderson voicing the TNG promo (for an episode I've seen, no less - avid Trekkie here). Pretty cool stuff coming out of the woodwork lately...

 7. Here are a couple of WNEP goodies from the 1980s. First, we have a news open from this period. And second, here is a WNEP reel with open included.

 8. Finishing up Abilene/Sweetwater from 1992 + Democratic Convention night coverage from 1992 from the Bay Area... KTXS (Sweetwater/Abilene, TX) August 27, 1992 6pm KPIX (San Francisco, CA) July 16, 1992 10:00pm - This was during KCRA and KRON's test of early Prime Time on the west coast starting at 7pm. KCRA and KRON had FCC approval for the early start, so they ran a traditional 35 minute 10pm newscast and the Tonight Show starting at 10:35. KPIX made the switch to early start also, but was not approved by the FCC (and IIRC, outright told "No, they couldn't run Letterman early), so they ended up with a one-hour newscast at 10pm followed by Letterman at 11pm. KGO and KTVU stuck with the traditional 8pm start time, so program ratings were all over the place during this timeframe. KGO (San Francisco, CA) July 16, 1992 11:00pm More to come... Don't be surprised when you start getting inundated with 2004/05/06 stuff - I have lots of that timeframe from allover the US... Jim

 9. Did I just hear "NewsCenter 10"? Yes please. This channel is a sudden treasure trove of Phoenix commercials and TV material: You know a channel is a keeper when it has KNXV ON-TV material, too!

 11. Ohhhhhhhhh... I didn't know hubby got a job up there. I was hoping for something a bit more sinister and gossipy. Hey did ya see KGTV hired Justin Bieber to report??? Now Bree Stephans will have a date to the Prom.

 12. ...and Meredith is another company that is having issues with AT&T, and by what is being circulated out there, could do the same any second now. As a DirecTV customer who gets one of their stations (WALA), this one came out of the blue. My only notification was reading about it in the trades, the "alert" channel popping up on 10-1, and a brief popup on their website, and other Meredith-owned stations. As of this posting, WALA is still up on DirecTV and there is no mention of any dispute and/or resolution to the matter.

 13. I agree. There's no obvious internal choice, and an external choice would result in the same culture clash issues that happened during the Katie Couric era. I say let people do it a few weeks at a time. Anthony Mason is always great, but why not let others do it too. I wondered if maybe they'd consider Norah O'Donnell and move up Margaret Brennan to CTM; she's been filling in a lot more.

 14. With this deal done, I wonder what happens next, will KRNV and KRXI swap owners so that Sinclair owns the Channel 4 license while Cunningham owns the Channel 11 license; furthermore, with Elko actually in the Salt Lake City market, will KENV become a KUTV satellite and allow KSL to become the sole NBC station for the Nevada side to the market?

 15. Plus I should mention that WPVI's new 5pm weekend newscasts are replacing paid programming, which is another weekend programming option. Better to get that ad money flowing on the weekends.

 16. Do you want that advertising money and viewers going to your own station with up-to-date content, or for those viewers to scoff as you run Byron Allen barter junket product that's free to run but makes you look no better than Logo running Golden Girls reruns as an alternative viewing option to the NFL? Even in the Central Time Zone I'm seeing more and more stations looking for more current content in that dead zone; some stations re-run their local public affairs stuff for awake audiences rather than what the syndication industry insultingly calls their 'original weekend content'.

 18. It really wasn't like what FTV made it seem to be. I watched it, and what it appeared to be reaching for is the "Next" format, or a newsmagazine. Still had an A-block, weather and sports. It still has kinks, but it could work. I just wish folks wouldn't take the sensationalism/over the top analytics from the FTVLive tabloid so seriously.

 19. Going back on KSDK using Hearst-inspired graphics, I wonder if you can actually find demo reels from that company during the 1990s. They are my second favorite design company, the first being Tvbd/JC Burns. Also, a KPHO Brief from 1994, during their "Fresh News" era. If you look in the description, you'll see ewjxn's working on uploading the first five minutes of this newscast tomorrow, meaning another rare Phoenix gem will be uploaded!

 23. WGME added a 7PM newscast this week, shifting Entertainment Tonight from its longtime home to 7:30PM. The Insider was cancelled by CTD, which created the vacancy. Sister station WPFO's 6:30PM newscast was cancelled last December after a two-year run.

 24. WPLG does it, WSVN does it, WABC does it, most stations in the west coast do it. So... yeah.
