  1. Can we cut out the overtly political conversations. Save it for a different board. One or two sentences maybe okay but not what’s going on here.

  2. Right, but other U.S.-based designers are doing some stellar work, just not in TV news (for the most part). What has made Apple such a successful brand over the years? For the most part, it wasn't (just) the technology, but rather the company's commitment to elegant, graceful design -- from the products themselves and the packaging to the stores where they are sold. That approach has helped Apple to thrive even though its products are (arguably) overpriced. Likewise, many American websites are global trend-setters in terms of design. There is no reason why we should not expect equally good design on television. The U.S. certainly has the talent to lead the world, but it's not doing that.

  3. That's the big problem with the show moving to Washington, though--does the American public really want even the perception of another newscast focused on politics when there are so many dedicated to the cause, and so many speaking to any number of different politically-minded choirs? I'm not saying leading with weather every night is the way forward, either. There's room for one of the national newscasts to do in-depth reporting every night, CBS would fit the bill like a glove, and they used to do it during the Pelley era. Even something akin to CBC's current format of The National where it's not a clean introduction of the news of the day, but rather an analytical approach to the news with investigative reporting sprinkled in, would work. Instead, they're trying to copy ABC and it shows.

  4. I hated that period. It seemed that every open back then was full of glossy, spinning spaceship-like objects with no point to them -- and a total lack of elegance and sophistication. It made the news look like a computer game. The trend towards clean, fresh, elegant lines in design is global -- and it goes beyond TV graphics. Right now, Europe is leading the way in television design. The French, for instance, continue to impress me in this regard. Decades ago, the U.S. led the field, but I'm afraid this hasn't been the case for years.

  5. I like Jeff but felt he was a bit weak and bland as a lead network anchor. I preferred Scott Pelley. His writing was solid and I felt the broadcast chose the right stories to lead with. Once Pelley left, it felt like the broadcast became less serious and it stopped becoming required viewing for me.

  6. Doubt it! As long as GMA (and Today) can keep being profitable, then expect them maintain status quo or possibly double down.

  7. I highly doubt Evening News moving to D.C. will help the show in any way. The whole 'closer to our nation's power source' angle IMO isn't special. IDK what they can do to stand out at this point. Perhaps a focus on international hard news might be unique in comparison to the U.S .focus on the other networks. In the extreme case, if the network were to replace Norah, what standout talent really exists at the network right now? Lol, if they gave it to Ted Kopel I'd definately tune in.

  8. I'm gonna say the template KFOR had in the old building for their set may have lasted for nearly THREE decades AND it survived 4 different ownerships (Palmer, New York Times, Local TV, Tribune) among other things. Oh and it survived through 2 tornadoes (June 1998, May 2003)

  9. Some new OKC stuff from Chris Sloan...... KWTV in the later days of Newsline 9: KFOR with their Vance/EGAD look: KOCO with the current logo but still under Gannett ownership:

  10. He is great on $100,000 Pyramid I must say. But I do agree with y'all, I still find it odd that they passed up on other qualified ABC News anchors for Michael. Disney loves Strahan and they possibly feel like he brings the "it" factor, but I've always speculated that adding a more masculine personality (Strahan, Josh Elliott, Jesse Palmer, and even Tony Reali) was always a band-aid to counter Stephanopoulos' stiffness during lighter, fluffier flare. I do wonder what GMA's longterm plans are. Will GMA3 still be in the cards? Roberts and Stephanopoulos aren't exactly ancient and the audience seems to like this team for the most part, unless ratings slide or the competition gets fierce, I can see this team staying for another 5-10 years tops.

  11. I'd have to read the article but if I had to take an educated guess it looks as if WATL is shifting MyNetworkTV programming to 11pm-1am

  12. Mike just needs to keep his day job as a sports analyst..

  13. Ratner isn't sounding very good these days either, sadly. I can't think of anyone who would fit that style... maybe they'll go in a complete other direction and nab Chapin like their northern sister did? Chapin WPVI opens would be something. (Although it would have been better if it were his more robotic early 90s delivery...)

  14. Even considering its small market size, this doesn't feel like a newscast from 1990:

  16. Looks like KJRH will actually have a little bit different version of the new graphic along with a white logo as well they have been using this on certain promos.

  17. Only reason GMA is doing so well is because Today and CBS This Morning had epic shakeups. Otherwise, GMA is a hot mess. The main question being: WHY THE EFF DO THEY HAVE MICHAEL STRAHAN CONDUCT SERIOUS INTERVIEWS?!?
    1 point
  18. Agreed. The best parts of Good Morning America these days are when George has a political interview or discussion with a political or legal analyst. The rest of the content is either not news and, when it is, it’s so poorly produced and rushed that the package leaves you asking more questions than you had before the report started. Plus, Robin is off every Friday now and, some weeks, off other days as well. Michael Strahan — who does not belong as a co-anchor — is off Mondays during the NFL season. Except for George, there’s barely any consistency in the hosts. And, good lord, the set....

  19. Given the prominence of the helicopter in severe weather coverage AND the sponsorship, that sponsorship probably offsets the cost quite a bit. I've watched tornado coverage on KFOR numerous times and they say "Bob Moore Chopper 4" like every 3 minutes. You NEVER hear a sponsorship uttered that many times on television newscasts.

  20. I think my biggest problem with these graphics is that the lower thirds are using the old Facebook logo that was replaced months ago. Dear Scripps Graphics Hub: The Facebook app logo is now circular. Everyone wanted Scripps to get new graphics. Well, here you go. This is the style that's popular right now. I wouldn't expect many changes to these as it rolls out across the rest of their stations.

  21. Everyone here is complaining about how awful this looks, but I bet if this had debuted in Europe it'd be hailed as revolutionary.

  22. Ratner's in his 70's, and is starting to decline a bit. I can't imagine that he'd be a viable long-term option, unless they'd want to do this all over again in a couple years.

  24. Some sad news out of Cincinnati, as Elliott Block, the owner of "WKRP" has passed away. https://www.wvxu.org/post/wkrp-tv-station-owner-elliott-block-dies-71#stream/0 WBQC-LD has been known as "WKRP" for the last decade, capitalizing on the infamous sitcom about the easy listening station turned rock and roll. It was the original home of the WB, and switched to UPN after Sinclair dropped that network in favor of the WB. When the CW was launched, WKRC added it as a subchannel and WBQC returned to independence. It was always a station that tested their limits with coverage, launching a campaign to get a slot on Time Warner Cable, long before the retransmission boxing matches we have today. When DirecTV picked them up as a UPN affiliate, they did a parody of the Verizon "can you hear me now" commercial, using a guy and a satellite dish asking "can you see me now?" Even as an independent, it has been a repository of subchannels, with RTN replacing regular programming on the main channel in 2011. I don't know what the future holds for the station, unless he established a trust or heirs to run it. Up in Cleveland, W16DO, formerly W35AX was sold by Media-Com television to HC2 Holdings. Media-Com (the Klaus Family) still owns WNIR-FM, one of the longest running FM talk stations in the nation.

  26. So if the suspect was white, they reported the race? In recent years, the media have simply tried to treat people of different races using the same criteria. Unless you are giving out a detailed description of an on-the-run suspect, why does his or her race matter? What some people describe as "PC culture" is, in many cases, just a common-sense move toward equality. I suppose that's why some on the right get so annoyed by it. Again, until a causal link between their religion and their actions is established, their religion doesn't matter. For instance, if a Christian participates in a shooting at an abortion clinic, their religion is irrelevant UNLESS and UNTIL there is evidence that the suspect's religious views played a role in his actions. Sometimes it's best to treat those sites as a running joke. The moment the media outlets start shaping their coverage to get the approval of conservative sites (or any political sites, for that matter) is the moment they lose all credibility.

  27. It could also be that party affiliations are germane to Republicans because they tend to abuse their offices more. Democrats get more sex scandals and other out of office criminal stuff... party affiliation doesn’t amount to a hill of beans regarding who’s wife you are boning. It does matter if you gave sweetheart deals to 5 of your best buddies in exchange for campaign contributions. This bias against conservatives canard is all in your head. Katie Hill just resigned for a sex scandal and her Democratic affiliation was the first thing or nearly the first thing mentioned. Next thing will be that they only mentioned her party to save face for not mentioning it all those other times. If Conservatives feel like making things work better then they can come to the table and have a voice. Constantly whining and playing the victim and wanting nothing to happen and reading the same junk over and over about how bad they have it is really getting old. Being dragged into oblivion because 40% of the country is a supposedly persecuted conservative isn’t very much fun and as their lives continue to deteriorate for lack of investment or progress I hope they’ll use their last pennies on a mirror when they ask why it’s this way.
