  1. Yeah, I can confidently say, (in my humble slightly biased opinion, of course) that WABC for the first time in pretty much forever, is the clear winner with the graphics in the O&O group (and arguably in all of NYC at this point.) WNBC comes close but I think WABC has the edge with their new graphics. Finally, and major props to WABC! It's so crazy how it took them a very long time to "perfect" their graphics. When I reflect on my time here on this great forum, some of us TVNewsTalk veterans talking about WABC's on-air presentation in the local New York Forum way back when TVNT was not even born yet (Local News Discussion) those who have been here long enough remember that forum haha, the graphics were always WABC's biggest gripe and chief complaint from the astute viewers of Channel 7, and we just felt that it just wasn't fair for "the top station in the nation" to have a lackluster boring, and pretty much subpar look. We collectively felt that WABC deserved to have a graphic package that is representative of a top local news station. And I gotta say, they sure as hell nailed it now with this new group O&O package! Above and beyond really, sure its flashy here and there but it's smooth and it works for them. Finally, after all these years of complaining about how WABC has had a lack of luster on-air presentation with their graphics, most people can probably put that to rest. Their news set while starting to show its age, (debut back in 2012 and over 10 years old now) to me still works, considering what they had prior which was pretty awful. The set still looks great and it still works to this day, as we've discussed on the New York forum for the WABC thread, the accompanying studio can be very versatile and just needs to be used more creatively and if they use it more they can squeeze more life out of it before the big move to Hudson Square. I think WABC is pretty much perfect right now and is finally looking like the #1 Station in the nation. I hope they continue with this package even through their move to Hudson Square. The graphics are so incredibly refreshing overall. Great Job!!

  2. These are so beautiful! Love the red, white and blue accents like KTRK ABC 13. I really wish KTRK ABC 13 in Houston would bring back Talent Opens....I miss them! This graphics package looks really great on each station.

  5. Weird that she wasn't on at 11pm on the 15th and off for the entirety of the 16th. Though she wasn't on the 17th at 5pm she was at 11pm. First time I think since November Bill and Sade have been on together. Bill seemed very happy to have her back in the closing seconds of the 11pm broadcast. Liz also has been a bit sporadic with appearances as well. WABC7NY_11PM-1-17-2024.mp4

  6. I’m getting dangerously close to deleting the weather apps for KTUL and KOKH from my phone. I’m disgusted at what Sinclair is doing to the stations, especially KTUL. Don Woods is rolling over in his grave right now. The only other Sinclair stations I have weather apps for are KATV, WEAR, WPDE, WSBT, and WHAM.

  7. Three potential reasons for this: 1) The open is being generated live out of Ross. Like a Viz, there needs to be dedicated system resources for playback, and any video save for MP4 or the platform's preferred codec would be an enormous resource hog. 2) Video probably makes the whole canvas look too busy with everything else going on around the main frame. 3) Licensed stock stills are less expensive than video

  8. Small set update. Before we relied on those windows in the front of the side room, but now we just moved away from that, moving our video screen to the opposite side of the room. Also moved is that backdrop we printed out, and our logo sign, moved to adjacent sides of the screen. That part of the update came earlier this week, today we added the double stand, added some greenery, our mic flag (better to just keep it there for storage too, as retrieving it from our sponsor teacher's room was always a hassle), and an actual flag.

  9. The Hill Sunday, a new public affairs program similar to the shows on its cable competitors and on the Big 4 Networks, will be hosted by its political editor Chris Stirewalt and launch on March 31 at 10am. https://deadline.com/2024/01/newsnation-sunday-public-affairs-chris-stirewalt-1235796126/

  10. It's a little tongue in cheek. I don't remember a reporter being hired to be a weekend morning reporter only.

  11. Aw, well, I know the new Disney/ABC/ESPN campus is going to look great and out of the park but I’ll also miss the street studio, never had a chance to visit. As for the new graphics, I’m glad the talents are back, makes it more distinct from their other stations!

  13. Yes, they kept the same. The background landscape also remains the same.

  14. Yeah, I've mentally visualized it just that way. The usual "sights and sounds" shots and then the "graphic wall" flies in right after MCTYW hits that long note.

  15. Never in a million years could I see them doing that. What’s likely going to happen is the full theme with the typical scenes of people in the city and the “Action News, Delaware Valley’s leading news program, with…”. The only thing that will change will be the graphic at the end, which will be the new intro that all the stations are adopting.

  20. Thanks for your insight. I’m sure many of the people working at those stations are taking your advice as we speak. It wouldn’t surprise me if Coastal has enough of a notorious reputation for people to know that it’s time to haul ass for the exit asap if they’re buying your station. It’s a shame that the sale to Forum didn’t go through. It may not have been ideal for FCC regulators, but given how the big affiliate owners use brazen loopholes to own multiple big four affiliates in much bigger markets (including Gray in Fargo itself), I think it’s ridiculous that the FCC thinks a group like Coastal serves the public interest better than a group like Forum.

  21. As someone who worked for a station bought by Coastal Television only to get terminated 2 weeks after the fact. LEAVE....NOW!!!!!!!!!!! They come in with all of these promises saying they will make the newsroom much better, invest in a lot of new equipment, provide better resources, the CEO (Bill Fielder) who is also a politician (if that gives you any idea as to what kind of person he is) will act like he is your best friend, has your interest at heart, then when he takes over he eliminates about 90% of the newsroom staff. He will offer you a severance of 1 weeks pay and an extra weeks pay if you sign paperwork promising not to discuss what happened. Spoiler alert, none of us did, and we all took to the competition and newspaper. This company makes Sinclair look like a 5 star company to work for. The guy who owns this is seriously scum. To those who work at KVRR and KQDS, get your resume and reel ready and be prepared to be on the chopping block if you do not leave immediately.

  22. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm one of the majority of folks that stream an awful lot. I watch very little broadcast TV. I stream my favorite CBS shows on Paramount Plus. I stream some ABC shows on Hulu too. However, I do long for the days of old-school TV news. Where I'm educated and informed without a lot of sensationalism, partisan politics and negativity. I wonder how many local stations are adapting to the idea of streaming local newscasts, where everybody can watch the news at their own convenience.

  27. Short sighted? That's the long game. They are switching to a pure-play content creation model because distribution is no longer lucrative.

  28. The issue with the set is that WABC is not using it to its full potential. You can see just from the 10am show how versatile the set and the lighting elements are.. but it took them over 10 years to try anything different. Even the secondary area with the big screen for weather/traffic and interviews can look dramatically different with the flip of some switches. That said, I’m glad they made the switch to cleaner, brighter and better background images. It does give the set a minor but nice facelift to match the new graphics. As for @Vlad’s wish for the new HQ set to be a street side studio — sorry, there will be no street side studios at Disney/ABC’s Hudson Square campus.
